Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

Matthias, Apostle of the 70

After Judas by transgression fell from his apostleship (Acts 1: 25), and hanging himself out of despair ended his life with a wretched and shameful death (Matt. 27: 5), then, that the number of the Twelve not be lacking, all the disciples gathered in one place after the Ascension of the Savior (the number of men and women being 120), and they chose two men from among them, Joseph, called Barsabas, who was also surnamed Justus, and Matthias, and they set them in the midst. Then they prayed to God and cast lots, "and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles" (Acts 1: 15-26). And thus, having taken the place of Judas, Matthias fulfilled the work of apostleship and the prophecy concerning Judas, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David: "And his bishopric let another take" (Ps. 108(109):8). After this, it is said, Matthias preached the Gospel in Ethiopia, and completed his life there in martyrdom.

PANAGIAS-PARAKLISIS-PRAYER SERVICE OF HEALING

From August 1st to the 15th our Orthodox Church prepares for the Feastday of the Koimisis(Falling asleep-Assumption) of the Holy Theotokos-the Ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God, which takes place on August 15th.

The Church commemorates her death and burial as one of the Great Feast Days and we prepare for this Feast with prayer services and fasting from certain foods.

Every Wednesday and Friday at 6:00pm the Paraklisis Prayer Service is chanted in both Greek and English by our chanters who sing in such a beautiful way.

Prayers are offered for the health and well being of our faithful.   August 10th and 12th.

You may give names of your family members or loved ones to Fr. Peter for prayers to be included in the services.

We encourage you to come with your whole family to at least one of these services.  Let your children know and see that our Church remembers them and that we should remember our loved ones through prayer and thanksgiving.

Please remember to come to the Great Vespers Service on Sunday Evening, August 14th at 6:00pm.

Our Feastday Celebration includes priests and visitors from our neighboring Churches.  This is a very important Feast for our Church and our young people should be present with their parents and our entire Church Family.

Acolytes(Altar boys) are needed at all services, but especially the Great Vespers and Divine Liturgy.

On Monday, August 15th the Orthros is a 9:00am and Divine Liturgy at 10:00am.

As in the tradition of our church, our Ladies Philoptochos will be hosting a special Coffee Fellowship on the night of the Panagia Vespers on August 14th.

Please consider donating an item for the coffee hour.  That would be greatly appreciated.  It needs to be fasting food. No Eggs, No Dairy. Thank you…..
