Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

Procession of the Precious Cross

Because of the many diseases that occur in the month of August, the custom prevailed of old in Constantinople to carry the precious Wood of the Cross in procession throughout the city for its sanctification and its deliverance from illnesses. It was brought forth from the imperial treasury on the last day of July and placed upon the Holy Table of the Great Church of the Holy Wisdom; and beginning today, until the Dormition of the Theotokos, it was carried in procession throughout the city and was set forth for veneration before the people.

Parish News

Feed the Hungry Ministry

Thank you to the volunteer, who wishes to remain anonymous, who prepared and delivered our sandwich obligation to Dorothy Day Hospitality House for the month of July. This is an ongoing ministry that donates 60 sandwiches on the fourth Wednesday of each month. To volunteer, please contact office@agoc.us. 

Sunday Collection Basket

We are very thankful for the support of so many families and individuals who financially support the Ministries of our Assumption Church. Your Stewardship Commitment and donations for candles, Feast Days and special offerings help our Church meet the Yearly Budget. Our Parish Council has decided to continue placing the traditional Collection Basket on a table in the Narthex. Parishioners and visitors may offer a donation if they wish following Divine Liturgy and other Services as they exit the Church. Thank you for your gifts that support the many Ministries and programs of our Church. God Bless you.

Youth and Adult Choir

Calling all Youth & Adult Choir Members, past & present!

Join our Consecration Home-Coming (HoCo) Choir! Please join us every Wednesday evening @ 7:00 pm from this Wednesday until Wednesday, September 27, to rehearse music for a performance that will take place on Sunday, October 1, during the Consecration Luncheon at the Amber Room.  Please contact Cindy Ziemnicki, youthchoir@agoc.us for information.  Rehearsals will also be 'broadcast' via Google Meet to accommodate summer travels and/or any difficulties attending rehearsals.

Greek School

Afternoon Youth Classes (2023-2024
 
For the next school year, Greek School classes will take place in person on Tuesdays only, from 4:30-6:30pm. The expectation will be that students attend for the full 2 hours of instruction each week. Please complete the registration form and submit payment by May 16, 2023 to receive the early discounted fee!
 
Adult Classes

Are you an adult interested in learning Modern Greek? 

Our Assumption Greek School offers an online learning program tailored to adults. Students should have a basic knowledge of Greek to enter the class.

Our curriculum consists of 30 one-hour classes offered on Monday evenings. We are following the “Ellinika sto pi kai fi 1” (Modern Greek in No Time) textbook for teaching Modern Greek as a foreign language, to learners who wish to acquire the first level of the language. Our current group of students worked on basic Greek Grammar skills and are looking forward to enhancing their knowledge in the coming year.
