Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the 4th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls from the 13th to the 19th of the present month, we chant the Service to the 630 Holy and God-bearing Fathers who came together for the 4th Ecumenical Council who assembled in Chalcedon in 451, to condemn Eutyches, who taught that there was only one nature, the divine, in Christ after the Incarnation, and Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who illegally received Eutyches back into communion and deposed Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had excommunicated Eutyches.

In the Slavic tradition, on this Sunday, the Fathers of the first six Ecumenical Councils are all commemorated.

The Holy Great Martyr Marina (Margaret)

This Martyr lived during the reign of Claudius II (268-270). She was from Pisidia of Cilicia and was the only daughter of a certain priest of the idols. On being orphaned by her mother, she was handed over to a certain woman who instructed her in the Faith of Christ. When she was fifteen years old, she was apprehended by the ruler of Olmbrius, and when asked her name, homeland, and faith, she answered: "My name is Marina; I am the offspring of the Pisidia; I call upon the Name of my Lord Jesus Christ." Because of this she endured bonds, imprisonment, and many whippings, and was finally beheaded in the year 270. Saint Marina is especially invoked for deliverance from demonic possession.

Today we pray for the repose of the souls of the servants of God Anastasios Papas (1 year), Dimitrios Haftoglou (6 months), Vladimir Savostianov (9 days) & all those who lost their live during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. May their memory be eternal.

GOYA REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

Are you a GOYAN or the parent of a GOYAN (6th grade to 12th grade)? Then we want to hear from you! 

Please go online at https://forms.gle/sUzLLEzDtuSy38WM9 and fill out the google form to sign up for the 2022/23 year, join our mailing list and let us know what you’re most interested in doing this upcoming year! 

Note that, while everyone from 6th-12th grade is a member of GOYA, Junior GOYA will consist of 6th-8th graders and Senior GOYA 9th-12th graders.

Greek Dance

To Our Assumption parishioners,
 
There is still time to register for Greek Dance! Please take a moment to complete the online registration form for each dancer through the new link https://forms.gle/YXewrMLrD5EdKJ6N9. 
 
Pricing is as follows: $200 for Ta Paramithia (Pre-k/Kinder) and $375 for Ta Patriotakia to Olympians (1st grade and up)***  
 
We accept payment via check payable to Assumption Greek Dance with the dancer's name(s) in the memo. Mail to the church office at 5761 E. Colorado St. Long Beach, CA 90814. We also accept payment via Venmo @LBGreekDance with the dancer's name(s) in the notation. All tuition must be paid in full by September 20, 2022. Families who need tuition assistance may reach out to Father Christo at frchristos@assumptionlb.org
 
We want to remind our families and dancers that church attendance is a requirement of Greek Dance. All dance families must have a stewardship card on file with the church office and be current with their stewardship. (Not sure if you have a card on file? Contact Voula at office@assumptionlb.org). If you have any registration questions, please contact us at greekdance@assumptionlb.org. 
 
We are excited for the start of Greek Dance and look forward to another memorable dance season!

Philoptochos

BACKPACK DRIVE - Summer may be on its way but it is the perfect time to help with the Philoptochos Operation Classroom Project. Last year with your help we were able to donate $5,500 that provided over 200 back packs and supplies to Long Beach children in need. Check your mail as you will be receiving our request for donations soon. A $35 donation will help buy and fill a backpack with supplies for a child in need and also buy books for underprivileged children in Long Beach. All proceeds from this drive are given to various Long Beach philanthropic organizations that assist families in need.
