The Holy Protection of the Theotokos

The Feast of the Protection commemorates the appearance of the most holy Theotokos in the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople in the tenth century, as recorded in the life of Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ's sake. While the multitudes of the faithful were gathered in church, Epiphanius, the friend of Saint Andrew, through the Saint's prayers, beheld the Virgin Mary above the faithful and spreading out her veil over them, signifying her unceasing protection of all Christians. Because of this we keep a yearly feast of gratitude, imploring our Lady never to cease sheltering us in her mighty prayers.

In the Greek tradition, this feast is celebrated on October 28, while in the Slavic tradition, this feast is celebrated on October 1.

Our Righteous Father Steven the Sabbaite

Saint Steven passed his life in ascetical discipline in the Monastery of Saint Sabbas, from whence also he received the name Sabbaite. He was consecrated bishop and reposed about the year 790, bequeathing to the Church a number of melismatic troparia.

The Reading is from John 21:14-25

At that time, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after he was raised from the dead, and he said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go." (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, "Follow me."

Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" So, the word went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die; but Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead.

Pastoral Message from the October Beacon

Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption,

Today, as I write this message, there is a garbage can behind me under the leak in the office ceiling and water is running down the exhaust pipe of the water heater in the closet of the men’s room; gutters have fallen off the building and the roof has become unattached due to rotten wood; and, there is evidence of decay, and all that comes with it, in the walls.

To have faith is to have complete and total trust in someone or something. Most times, the word faith is specific to faith in God. Many confess to having faith in God, but what exactly is this confession? For many, I would argue that having faith in God is conditional – faith in God is based on perceived need. Many have no problem trying to rely on God when they or a loved one is facing an illness or operation, when we struggle with our finances, when we feel like danger is eminent, or any other potential hardship or torment presents itself. What about when all is well?

The Apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 8:12-15 (paraphrased) that one should give “according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have” that no one may be burdened and that no one will lack.

True faith in God is manifested in our actions. Our faith allows us to know that He will provide – but how does He provide – simply, He provides through His faithful. His faithful provide for us in our times of shortfall, but as faithful, are we not also to provide when we are in excess? This is what St. Paul is speaking of.

The time has come for us to build a new fellowship home for our parish. Over the past 2 years, many (including myself) have answered the call. I beg of you to follow our example. We have been blessed beyond what we deserve. Let us move to action and confess our faith by making a pledge and offering today. Help those who have already committed.

Picture Directory

This Fall, a picture directory will be published by the Parish.  With so many new faces, it is important that each of us has a reference for all of our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Each listing will include contact information and a 1.5” by 1.5” square picture.  Please email a picture that can be cropped to square for inclusion in the directory to priest@assumption.ky.goarch.org.  If you don’t have a picture, we have a volunteer that will take pictures in the church towards the end of the Summer.
 
In order to publish directories every few years and to be as fiscally responsible as possible, we will publish it “in-house.”

Orthodox Bible Study

Bible Study is an opportunity for us to apply the Scriptures to our everyday lives. The Bible is the “Good News” that enriches our faith and deepens our understanding of every issue that we face. This can only be done through obtaining the mind of the Holy Fathers. Let the scripture come alive in your life today!!!

The Wednesday Orthodox Bible Study will meet on Wednesday Evenings from 6:00pm-7:30pm (please check calendar to verify times) starting September 12th. The Sunday Orthodox Bible Study will meet after Divine Liturgy from 12:00 noon-1:00pm (please check calendar to verify times) to study St. Paul's 2nd Letter to the Corinthians. Make a commitment to learning His Word!
