The Holy Martyrs Hermylus and Stratonicus

Saints Hermylus and Stratonicus contested for piety's sake during the reign of Licinius, in the year 314. Saint Hermylus was a deacon, and Stratonicus was his friend. For his confession of Christ, Hermylus was beaten so fiercely that his whole body was covered with wounds. Stratonicus, seeing him endure this and other torments that left him half dead, wept with grief for his friend. From this he was discovered to be a Christian, and when he had openly professed his Faith and had been beaten, he and Hermylus were cast into the Danube River, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

Hilary of Poitiers

The holy Hierarch Hilary was born of pagan parents in Gaul, and was trained in philosophy and rhetoric. At a time when paganism was still strong in Gaul, Saint Hilary understood the falsehood of polytheism, and became a Christian, and a great defender of his new Faith. About the year 350 he was ordained Bishop of Poitiers, when Arles and Milan were in the hands of the Arians and the Arian Constantius was sole Emperor. Like his contemporary Saint Athanasius, Saint Hilary's episcopate was one long struggle against the Arians. As bishop of Poitiers, Saint Hilary foresaw the future greatness of Martin (see Nov. 12), and attached him to himself. In 355, when required to agree to the condemnation of Saint Athanasius passed by the Council of Milan, Hilary wrote an epistle to Constantius convicting the wrongs done by the Arians and requesting, among other things, the restoration of the Orthodox bishops, including Athanasius. For this, Hilary was banished to Asia Minor, where he wrote his greatest work, On the Trinity. Saint Hilary returned to his see in 360, where Saint Martin sought him out again. It was this time that Saint Hilary blessed Martin to found a monastery near Poitiers, where Martin remained until being consecrated Bishop of Tours in 371. In his last years, Saint Hilary, strove for the deposition of Auxentius, the Arian Bishop of Milan, but by affecting an Orthodox confession Auxentius retained his see. Saint Hilary reposed in peace about the year 368. Auxentius died in 374 and was succeeded by Saint Ambrose, who continued Saint Hilary's battle against Arianism.

The Reading is from John 21:14-25

At that time, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after he was raised from the dead, and he said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go." (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, "Follow me."

Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" So, the word went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die; but Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13.

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Pastoral Message from the January Beacon

Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption,

Greetings in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

The Nativity of the Lord has now passed and we await His Presentation to the Temple and reception by the Righteous Symeon.   Although we are moving away from what many term  the “season of giving,” it is important that we, as followers of Christ, fight to keep within us the spirit of the “cheerful giver.” (2 Cor. 9:7).  Wouldn’t it be nice if the feeling of Christmas was in our hearts every day of the year?

As Orthodox Christians, we understand that evangelism is not purely a function of preaching with our mouths, but also preaching with our actions.  It is through our love that we bring people to Christ.  St. Paul tells us that those to whom we are philanthropic “will give glory to God for the obedience which you show in professing the gospel of Christ.“  (2 Cor. 9:13)  When we profess to something it means that we own it—in other words, we are not just talking the talk but walking the walk.

As we enter the new year, let us:

  • be cheerful givers to all of creation,
  • offer our time and talent to Christ’s Holy Church and to His people,
  • be a beacon of righteousness to all who know us,
  • not leave behind the spirit of Christmas and the peace that comes along with it,
  • set aside our worldly cares that we may receive the King of All!

Yes, it is possible to have the peace in our hearts that Christmas brings each and every day of the year!!!

Picture Directory

01/01/2019

This Fall, a picture directory will be published by the Parish.  With so many new faces, it is important that each of us has a reference for all of our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Each listing will include contact information and a 1.5” by 1.5” square picture.  Please email a picture that can be cropped to square for inclusion in the directory to priest@assumption.ky.goarch.org.  If you don’t have a picture, we have a volunteer that will take pictures in the church towards the end of the Summer.
 
In order to publish directories every few years and to be as fiscally responsible as possible, we will publish it “in-house.”

Vasilopita Celebration and Auction

01/13/2019

On Sunday, January 13, 2019, the Blessed Vasilopita will be cut and distributed to the ministries of our Church and Parish. Through our faith, and the actions born of it, we ask for the Blessings of the Lord upon all of our ministries that do His divine will.

Following the Vasilopita celebration, the Philoptochos members will give the Parish the opportunity to display faith and generosity as Vasilopita is auctioned to aid their philanthropic activities. Our Philoptochos Chapter truly works to aid those who are in need. Let us come and support them as they do His work.


Restaurant Circle

The Restaurant Circle will meet every few months at a different restaurant.  There will be no planned menus, no fixed costs and no obligations - just good food, good fun and great company!

Greek Glendi 2019

Glendi 2019 will be held on Friday, February 8th at The Olmsted.  The theme for this year is 'Flavors of Modern Greece'. The Glendi committee is in need of unique items to be auctioned in the silent auction.  The silent auction is a major fundraiser for our parish.  If you have an item that you would like to donate, please complete the form found outside of the church office and return it and the items to either Souha Nassar, Angela Pecha, Dana Schenk or Joanna Caneris.  Thank you for your support!

Raffle tickets to win one week (to be mutually agreed upon between Feb. 2019 - Feb. 2020) at "Villa by the Sea", a four bedroom condo on the beach in Blue Mountain Beach located on infamous 30a are still available.  The price for each ticket is $100 and only 100 tickets will be sold.  Drawing will be held on February 8th at the Glendi.  Need NOT be present to win. Orthodox Bible Study

Bible Study is an opportunity for us to apply the Scriptures to our everyday lives. The Bible is the “Good News” that enriches our faith and deepens our understanding of every issue that we face. This can only be done through obtaining the mind of the Holy Fathers. Let the scripture come alive in your life today!!!

The Wednesday Orthodox Bible Study will meet on Wednesday Evenings from 6:00pm-7:30pm (please check calendar to verify times) starting September 12th. The Sunday Orthodox Bible Study will meet after Divine Liturgy from 12:00 noon-1:00pm (please check calendar to verify times) to study St. Paul's 2nd Letter to the Corinthians. Make a commitment to learning His Word!
