Fathers of the 1st Council

The heresiarch Arius was a Libyan by race and a protopresbyter of the Church of Alexandria. In 315, he began to blaspheme against the Son and Word of God, saying that He is not true God, consubstantial with the Father, but is rather a work and creation, alien to the essence and glory of the Father, and that there was a time when He was not. This frightful blasphemy shook the faithful of Alexandria. Alexander, his Archbishop, after trying in vain to correct him through admonitions, cut him off from communion and finally in a local council deposed him in the year 321. Yet neither did the blasphemer wish to be corrected, nor did he cease sowing the deadly tares of his heretical teachings; but writing to the bishops of other cities, Arius and his followers requested that his doctrine be examined, and if it were unsound, that the correct teaching be declared to him. By this means, his heresy became universally known and won many supporters, so that the whole Church was soon in an uproar.

Therefore, moved by divine zeal, the first Christian Sovereign, Saint Constantine the Great, the equal to the Apostles, summoned the renowned First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, a city of Bithynia. It was there that the shepherds and teachers of the Church of Christ gathered from all regions in the year 325. All of them, with one mouth and one voice, declared that the Son and Word of God is one in essence with the Father, true God of true God, and they composed the holy Symbol of Faith up to the seventh article (since the remainder, beginning with "And in the Holy Spirit," was completed by the Second Ecumenical Council). Thus they anathematized the impious Arius of evil belief and those of like mind with him, and cut them off as rotten members from the whole body of the faithful.

Therefore, recognizing the divine Fathers as heralds of the Faith after the divine Apostles, the Church of Christ has appointed this present Sunday for their annual commemoration, in thanksgiving and unto the glory of God, unto their praise and honour, and unto the strengthening of the true Faith.

This Martyr contested in Byblos of Syria during the reign of Diocletian, in 289. Because she taught other young maidens to turn from the idols to Christ, she was brought before the governor. Her ears were pierced with heated spits until blood ran from her nostrils; finally she was beheaded, at the age of ten or twelve.

At that time, being raised from the dead, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

IN THOSE DAYS, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesos, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Miletos he sent to Ephesos and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.' Pastoral Message from the June Beacon

Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption,

Χριστός Ανέστη!!! Christ is Risen!!!

This issue of the Beacon is dedicated to the “relaxing” of our Parish’s Covid Worship Protocols. It is truly a blessing to be able to make this announcement!

I must confess, although I am very happy that some sense of normalcy is beginning to return to our Parish (and the world) that I am also extremely troubled by the guidance that the CDC provided to us and on which we based our new protocols. I truly feel that the message that is being sent is, at best, paradoxical. On one hand, it says to be very vigilant; and on the other, it says be free of restrictions. This is a recipe for confusion.

I, like everyone else, have had enough of masks, Zoom and Facebook Live; but I also know that I never want to be the cause of any other’s ailment or pain. As Christians, we should always put “the other” first in our hearts. The Lord calls us to “Love our neighbor as ourselves” (Mt 22:31) through our love for one another that, as Christ tells us, “all will know that you are My disciples.” (Jn 13:35)

As the spiritual father of the Assumption Parish, what is most troublesome to me is that so many believe that love for one another is manifested in forcing our opinions on one another. So many believe that imposing their belief on others as absolute truth is a sign of love—it is, in fact, a sign of ego. Christ is the Truth—and we don’t even force Christ on others!

On the door of our church, it will state our protocols, which will include masks for unvaccinated individuals and continued social distancing. That sign requires spiritual obedience because it is a directive of the church. Equally as important, it requires us to respect one another in love. Honor your brothers and sisters in Christ by allowing them to continue taking precautions if they are unvaccinated or protecting themselves due to a health condition; respect those who have decided to “unmask” after vaccination; and above all, treat each other with love and respect.

Therefore, I humbly ask that you respect the protocols of the church. If and when you do not, you cause me pain personally. I do not want to have the anxiety of watching our faithful set aside humility and obedience in the treatment of others.

I truly believe that the next few weeks may be the most challenging thus far, but it is in our control to make them the most blessed.

Assumption Covid Guidelines

ASSUMPTION PARISH (LOUISVILLE, KY) WORSHIP GUIDELINES

REVISED MAY 23, 2021 - EFFECTIVE JUNE 6, 2021

Before Coming to Church, please assess your health: If you are currently experiencing any symptoms of illness, please stay at home.

  • Books back in pews; RSVP’s and temperature checks no longer needed.
  • Mask protocols
    • Masks are highly recommended for all but are not required for those who have been fully vaccinated.
    • Those who are fully vaccinated and choose to not wear a mask are asked to respect the space requirement for those who are masked and socially distanced.
    • Masks for children under the age of 7 are not required
  • Seating:
    • A section of the church will be designated for unvaccinated individuals and those who, although vaccinated, continue to maintain mask and social distance.
    • The remaining portion of the church will be open seating (every other pew) for those who have been vaccinated and do not choose to be socially distant.
  • No paper bulletins will be distributed. Bulletins will continue to be sent electronically.
  • Following Divine Liturgy, a fellowship hour will be held outdoors, weather permitting.

 Holy Communion Procedures (Metropolis of Detroit)

It is clearly understood that the Holy Communion is the very Body and Blood of Christ which cannot be tainted by any harmful thing, and that those who receive it with proper intent of mind and heart cannot be harmed by it. However, for the pastoral reason that we do not want people to allow their fear of the coronavirus to separate them from the chalice, clergy are to drop the sacrament into the opened mouths of the faithful, being careful that the spoon not come into contact with the person. If accidental contact with the individual is made, the spoon will be immediately sanitized by dipping it in grain alcohol (140 proof or more) for at least 30 seconds, dipping it in a rinse of water, and wiping it dry prior to the next use.

The Restaurant Circle will meet every few months at a different restaurant.  There will be no planned menus, no fixed costs and no obligations - just good food, good fun and great company!

For the next few weeks, Livestreaming our services on Facebook will be the new normal.  It is truly important that we, as the Body of Christ, continue to pray together during these trying times.
 
You do not need to register with Facebook to watch our livestream or view the daily video postings that have been uploaded. (In order to post, “like,” or comment, you must be “on” Facebook.)  One merely needs to navigate to the page and scroll down.  Facebook will have a pop-up asking you to register, but you need not register. I do not have Facebook, nor will I register.
