Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Ἀδελφοί, εἰδότες ὅτι οὐ δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ἔργων νόμου, ἐὰν μὴ διὰ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐπιστεύσαμεν, ἵνα δικαιωθῶμεν ἐκ πίστεως Χριστοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου· διότι οὐ δικαιωθήσεται ἐξ ἔργων νόμου πᾶσα σάρξ. Εἰ δέ, ζητοῦντες δικαιωθῆναι ἐν Χριστῷ, εὑρέθημεν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἁμαρτωλοί, ἆρα Χριστὸς ἁμαρτίας διάκονος; Μὴ γένοιτο. Εἰ γὰρ ἃ κατέλυσα, ταῦτα πάλιν οἰκοδομῶ, παραβάτην ἐμαυτὸν συνίστημι. Ἐγὼ γὰρ διὰ νόμου νόμῳ ἀπέθανον, ἵνα θεῷ ζήσω. Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι· ζῶ δέ, οὐκέτι ἐγώ, ζῇ δὲ ἐν ἐμοὶ Χριστός· ὃ δὲ νῦν ζῶ ἐν σαρκί, ἐν πίστει ζῶ τῇ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ, τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντός με καὶ παραδόντος ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ.

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

The women disciples of the Lord heard from the angel, the joyful news of the Resurrection and the repeal of the sentence imposed upon our forefathers. With pride they said to the Apostles, "Death is vanquished, Christ our God is risen bestowing upon the world His great mercy."

Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross.

In giving birth you preserved your virginity; in your dormition you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were translated unto life, since you are the Mother of Life; and by your intercessions redeem our souls from death.

Assumption Memorial Services

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Today, at the end of the Divine Liturgy, we will conduct a 1-Year Memorial Service for ANNA (IOANNA KIOUSIS) KARALIS. We pray that God place her soul among the righteous in the Kingdom of God and that He give comfort to her family who is grieving her loss.

Trophimus, Sabbatius, & Dorymedon the Martyrs

In 278, during the reign of Probus, Saints Trophimus and Sabbatius came to Antioch, and seeing the city celebrating the festival of Apollo at Daphne lamented the blindness of the people, and presented themselves as Christians to Atticus the Governor. Saint Trophimus was stripped of his clothing, and was stretched out and beaten until the earth was red with his blood. Then he was hung up, scraped on his sides, and imprisoned in torments. Saint Sabbatius was tortured so savagely that he gave up his spirit in his sufferings. Trophimus was sent to Synnada, wearing iron shoes fitted with sharp iron nails within; he was further tormented without mercy, then cast into prison. Dorymedon, a counsellor, and a pagan, came to the prison and cared for Trophimus. When a certain feast came, Dorymedon was asked why he did not sacrifice to the idols; he proclaimed himself a Christian, for which he was imprisoned, pierced with heated spits, frightfully punished, and finally beheaded with Saint Trophimus.

PROCESSION OF THE CROSS: TODAY, towards the end of Liturgy, we will celebrate the special procession connected with the Elevation of the Holy Cross and blessed basil will be distributed at the end of Liturgy as is the custom.

BROCKTON GREEK FESTIVAL 2021 — TODAY is the Final Day: Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton will be holding the final day of their annual Greek Festival TODAY Sunday September 19th from 11am to 6pm. Their festival will take place on their church grounds located at 457 Oak Street in Brockton, Massachusetts. There will be Greek Dance performances, live Greek music and dancing, authentic Greek food and pastries, and more. Free admission and parking. Rain or shine!!!

ASSUMPTION COFFEE HOUR RESUMES TODAY: Our Assumption Coffee Hour resumes TODAY September 19th and will take place in our Community Center immediately following the Divine Liturgy.

SUNDAY SCHOOL BEGINS TODAY: Registration and Classes for the 2021-2022 school year for Sunday School will begin TODAY September 19th. Classes will take place in the Community Center after Holy Communion each Sunday.

PHILOPTOCHOS: Our St. Barbara Philoptochos Society is helping a teacher from our parish and her students who might not be able to provide their own school supplies this school year. If you would like to help, there will be a marked box in our Assumption Community Center during the month of September. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated. ADULT CLASS SEMINAR: As part of our introduction to Greek civilization, this Fall we will continue our study in Greek tragedy with the reading of Sophocles' classic masterpiece, Oedipus the King. The class will be offered via Zoom every Monday from 7pm to 8:30pm, starting on October 18th to December. In the past we used to meet at the Community Center of the Assumption Church in Pawtucket, but due to the continuation of the coronavirus, lately, the class takes place via Zoom. If you are interested in participating in this class and you need more information, please call John Lyssikatos at 401-728-4452 after October 8th.
