O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 1:10-14; 2:1-3.

IN THE BEGINNING, Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet?" Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?

Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him.

Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas
The Reading is from Mark 2:1-12

At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic-"I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas

This divine Father, who was from Asia Minor, was from childhood reared in the royal court of Constantinople, where he was instructed in both religious and secular wisdom. Later, while still a youth, he left the imperial court and struggled in asceticism on Mount Athos, and in the Skete at Beroea. He spent some time in Thessalonica being treated for an illness that came from his harsh manner of life. He was present in Constantinople at the Council that was convened in 1341 against Barlaam of Calabria, and at the Council of 1347 against Acindynus, who was of like mind with Barlaam; Barlaam and Acindynus claimed that the grace of God is created. At both these Councils, the Saint contended courageously for the true dogmas of the Church of Christ, teaching in particular that divine grace is not created, but is the uncreated energies of God which are poured forth throughout creation: otherwise it would be impossible, if grace were created, for man to have genuine communion with the uncreated God. In 1347 he was appointed Metropolitan of Thessalonica. He tended his flock in an apostolic manner for some twelve years, and wrote many books and treatises on the most exalted doctrines of our Faith; and having lived for a total of sixty-three years, he reposed in the Lord in 1359.

His holy relics are kept in the Cathedral of Thessalonica. A full service was composed for his feast day by the Patriarch Philotheus in 1368, when it was established that his feast be celebrated on this day. Since works without right faith avail nothing, we set Orthodoxy of faith as the foundation of all that we accomplish during the Fast, by celebrating the Triumph of Orthodoxy the Sunday before, and the great defender of the teachings of the holy Fathers today.

Photini the Samaritan Woman

Saint Photini lived in 1st century Palestine and was the woman that Christ met at Jacob's Well in Samaria as recorded in the Gospel according to John (4:4-26). After her encounter with Christ, she and her whole family were baptized by the Apostles and became evangelists of the early Church. Photini and her children eventually were summoned before the emperor Nero and instructed to renounce their faith in Christ. They refused to do so, accepting rather to suffer various tortures. After many efforts to force her to surrender to idolatry, the emperor ordered that she be thrown down a well. Photini gave up her life in the year 66.

St. Photini is commemorated on three occasions during the year: February 26 (Greek tradition), March 20 (Slavic tradition), and the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman on the 5th Sunday of Pascha.

Cuthbert the Wonderworker, Bishop of Lindisfarne

Saint Cuthbert was born in Britain about the year 635, and became a monk in his youth at the monastery of Melrose by the River Tweed. After many years of struggle as a true priest of Christ, in the service both of his own brethren and of the neglected Christians of isolated country villages, he became a solitary on Farne Island in 676. After eight years as a hermit, he was constrained to leave his quiet to become Bishop of Lindisfarne, in which office he served for almost two years. He returned to his hermitage two months before he reposed in peace in 687. Because of the miracles he wrought both during his life and at his tomb after his death, he is called the "Wonderworker of Britain." The whole English people honoured him, and kings were both benefactors to his shrine and suppliants of his prayers. Eleven years after his death, his holy relics were revealed to be incorrupt; when his body was translated from Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral in August of 1104, his body was still found to be untouched by decay, giving off "an odour of sweetest fragrancy," and "from the flexibility of its joints representing a person asleep rather than dead." Finally, when the most impious Henry VIII desecrated his shrine, opening it to despoil it of its valuables, his body was again found incorrupt, and was buried in 1542. It is believed that after this the holy relics of Saint Cuthbert were hidden to preserve them from further desecration.

Assumption Announcements

Masks are no longer required in Church or in the Community Center.

Anyone wishing to wear a mask can voluntarily continue to do so.

AT-HOME ANTIGEN RAPID SELF-TESTS AVAILABLE:  We have been given Covid-19 At-Home Antigen Rapid Self-Tests which were kindly and generously given to us by Pawtucket City Hall.  We thank them for thinking of our church. If you would like to be given any test kits to take home with you, please ask a Parish Council member in the Narthex upon your arrival to church TODAY, and they will be provided to you.  

ARCHDIOCESE - UKRAINE RELIEF FUND:  We will be joining the efforts of the Archdiocese to offer what we can through the IOCC to all brothers and sisters affected by the war in the region of Ukrainia, regardless of nationality or religion.  To make a donation, please go to https://www.goarch.org/donate/ukraine. In response to the tragic humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, and the immediate aid needed there, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announced a major fundraising effort that will help those most affected by the Russian invasion. The first action taken by Archbishop Elpidophoros was to donate $100,000 to the Ecumenical Patriarchate to support the efforts of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Archbishop Elpidophoros also announced the creation of the Ukrainian Relief Effort which was established in collaboration with International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC).Together, the Archdiocese and IOCC aim to raise $1 Million for both immediate and long-term support of the Ukrainian people. LENTEN VESPERS:  As is the case every year during Great Lent, we will be celebrating Lenten Vespers every Sunday evening at 5pm at various area Orthodox Churches. The second of these will take place TONIGHT on the eve of Sunday, March 20th at 5pm at St. John's Parish, 501 East School Street, Woonsocket, Rhode Island / 401-766-3343. The preacher will be Fr. Elie Estephan. Priests and parishioners from the member churches of the Association of Rhode Island Orthodox Clergy will be participating. A reception will follow in their Community Center. ADULT CLASS SEMINAR: Following our study, “Aspects of Greek Civilization”, we will continue with the reading of Aeschylus’ classic masterpiece, “The Persians” — This tragedy is based on the historic events of the Persian defeat in the battles of Marathon and Salamis. Although it is a celebration of the Greek victory, Aeschylus describes the universal experience of suffering caused by the wars from the perspective of one of the losers and shows sympathy and compassion towards those who lost their beloved ones.  Classes are currently taking place via Zoom on Monday evenings from 7pm to 8:30pm and will continue thru and including April 11th. GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS: This year’s Greek Independence Day celebrations will take place on Tuesday, March 22nd at 12 Noon at Pawtucket City Hall and at 4pm at the Rhode Island State House in Providence followed by a reception to take place at Church of the Annunciation, 175 Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY DOXOLOGY and GREEK SCHOOL PROGRAM: On Sunday, March 27th, at the end of the Divine Liturgy, we will sing the doxology honoring the heroes, our fallen mothers and fathers, of the Greek Revolution for their faith and heroism in fighting for our homeland during the Greek Revolution. Also, the Greek School students will celebrate Greek Independence Day with a short program in the Community Center after the Divine Liturgy. Reception will be hosted by the PTO in the Community Center.

PHILOPTOCHOS EASTER BREAD:  The ladies of our St. Barbara Philoptochos Society will be making their delicious Easter Bread. Please place your orders by the April 2nd deadline. Pick-ups will be on Saturday, April 16th from 10am to 1pm and after Church on Palm Sunday, April 17th.  All orders must be paid for at the time of pick-up.  See attached flyer for all of the details.

PALM SUNDAY LUNCHEON:  Our traditional Palm Sunday Luncheon will take place in the Community Center immediately following church on Palm Sunday, April 17, 2022. Enjoy some fellowship while you enjoy a delicious meal on Palm Sunday. See the attached flyer for reservation information. Tickets are available for purchase after church in the Community Center. Tickets are $25 for Adults, $15 for Ages 15 and under, and Free for Ages 6 and under (Mac & Cheese / Cheese Pizza / Fries). See attached flyer for more information.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY BOSTON PARADE:  The  annual Greek Independence Day Boston Parade will take place on Sunday, May 1st, beginning at 1pm.  The parade route will proceed down Boylston Street from Mass Ave. to Charles Street.  There will be a celebration "On the Park" at the Boston Common immediately following the parade at the Parkman Bandstand.  The parade is presented by the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of New England in cooperation with the Metropolis of Boston, the Consulate General of Greece, and the Mayor's Office of Special Events and Tourism. GOYA GODPARENT LUNCHEON:  Assumption GOYA will be sponsoring a Godparent Luncheon on Sunday, May 22, 2022. This will give us an opportunity to participate in liturgy together and share a meal. This luncheon is not only an opportunity for our youth to bring their Godparent, but for all to enjoy Liturgy with their Godparent or Godchild.  Ticket sales will start the first Sunday of April (April 3rd) and will be sold up until Sunday, May 15, 2022.  Please save the date!
