 CENTENNIAL ALBUM RECEPTION

           We are pleased to advise that the Centennial Album Editorial Board will host a Reception for the Dormition Centennial Commemorative Album on Sunday, August 26, 2018, immediately following the Divine Liturgy.  Those who have purchased or are due an album will be able to receive it at that time.  Albums will also be available for purchase for $50. 

We are making every effort to reach out to all who would have interest in attending. Please pass along the good news to those who might not regularly receive the Koinotis or who may not be on the church’s various electronic communications.

We originally committed to an April 1 release date. It was not due to lack of effort that we missed this and subsequent targets. The Editorial Board needed to take the extra time and especially the care necessary to publish this album consistent with the love and dedication that our parishioners and contributors put into this effort over the past couple of years. 

We look forward to celebrating with you our colorful history. Come and join us!

FESTIVAL

     Once again our festival is fast approaching.  Before you know it, the festival weekend of September 7, 8 and 9th will be upon us.  So, now is the time to think how you are going to help your church.  

     You can help in many ways, you all know the drill by now.  You can either help us during the week of the festival by skewing kabobs, cutting vegetables or putting the final touches together that will help this year's festival be another success.  Most help will be needed during the 3 day weekend in various areas!  

     You can also donate items from the festival item list or by putting an ad in our festival ad book, as soon as possible. Whatever you decide you to do, it would be greatly appreciated, but you need to decide.  It's your choice as to how you want to help your church.  

     We are currently asking you to please call and let the church office know, so we can mark you down.   As always, thank you in advance.  If you have any questions, please ask our festival co-chair people, Andy Galbadis and/or Diane Karavitis.

Brethren, I would remind you in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast -- unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.

And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Andrew the General & Martyr & his 2,593 soldiers

During the reign of Maximian, about the year 289, Antiochus the Commander-in-Chief of the Roman forces sent Andrew with many other soldiers against the Persians, who had overrun the borders of the Roman dominion. Saint Andrew persuaded his men to call upon the Name of Christ, and when they had defeated the Persians with unexpected triumph, his soldiers believed in Christ with him. Antiochus, learning of this, had them brought before him. When they confessed Christ to be God, he had Andrew spread out upon a bed of iron heated fiery hot, and had the hands of his fellow soldiers nailed to blocks of wood. Antiochus then commanded some thousand soldiers to chase the Saints beyond the borders of the empire. Through the instructions of Saint Andrew, these soldiers also believed in Christ. At the command of Antiochus, they were all beheaded in the mountain passes of the Taurus mountains of Cilicia.

ΙΒ΄ ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ  ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΥ   

(O πλούσιος νεανίας)

Στο σημερινό ευαγγέλιο ο Χριστός μας ασχολείται με την πνευματική κατάσταση του φιλάργυρου ανθρώπου και τις επιπτώσεις της πάνω στην απόκτηση της βασιλείας Του Θεού.

Ενώ όμως άλλες φορές με παραβολές αναφέρθηκε σε πλούσιους που ζούσαν μια ζωή μακριά από το Θεό, που Τον είχαν ξεχάσει ότι υπάρχει –όπως ήταν η παραβολή με τον άφρονα πλούσιο ή με το φτωχό Λάζαρο-  στο σημερινό ευαγγέλιο παρακολουθούμε τη συνάντηση Του με έναν άλλο πλούσιο, ένα νέο, διαφορετικό από τους προηγούμενους. Αυτού του νέου η σκέψη του, η εξωτερική συμπεριφορά του, η προσωπικότητά του χαρακτηρίζονται από θρησκευτικότητα και ένα ενεργό ενδιαφέρον για αναζήτηση της πνευματικής αλήθειας.

Ετσι, μέσα από τον διάλογο που αναπτύσσεται διακρίνουμε έναν άνθρωπο που απευθύνεται με σεβασμό προς τον Χριστό, που ενδιαφέρεται να εξασφαλίσει την αιώνια ζωή, που είναι σίγουρος ότι τηρεί κατά γράμμα τον θρησκευτικό νόμο και που θέλει να μάθει αν με όσα κάνει θα το πετύχει. Λέει δηλαδή, δεν έκλεψα, δεν εφόνευσα, δεν εμοίχευσα, δεν ψευδομαρτύρησα και αγάπησα τον πλησίον μου σαν τον εαυτό μου. Σ’αυτόν τον άνθρωπο ο Χριστός μας απαντάει με ένα τρόπο απόλυτο, και του λέει: «ένα πράγμα σου μένει, πούλησε όλα τα υπάρχοντα σου, μοίρασε τα λεφτά στους φτωχούς και έλα μαζί μου». Σαν άκουσε αυτά τα λόγια ο νέος κλονίστηκε, στενοχωρήθηκε κι’ έφυγε. Αλλά και στους απορημένους μαθητές Του ο Χριστός μίλησε με απόλυτο τρόπο, λέγοντάς τους ότι είναι ευκολότερο για ένα χοντρό σκοινί να περάσει από την τρύπα της βελόνας παρά να μπεί ένας πλούσιος στον Παράδεισο.

Οταν ο πλούσιος αυτός νέος παρουσιάστηκε μπροστά στον Χριστό έψαχνε την αυτοδικαίωση του, ήταν σχεδόν βέβαιος ότι όλα τα είχε κάνει σωστά στη ζωή του και περίμενε την επιβράβευση, το εισητήριο γιά την αιώνια ζωή. Και Εκείνος για να τον ξυπνήσει, για να του αποδείξει ότι κατέχεται από το πάθος της φιλαργυρίας, του ζήτησε το απόλυτο : να αποχωρισθεί από τα υπάρχοντά του και να τα χαρίσει στους φτωχούς.  Εγνώριζε ο Χριστός μας ότι ο νέος είχε χάσει την αίσθηση πως τα υπάρχοντά του, τα πλούτη του, η υγεία του και ότι άλλο κατείχε ήταν θεϊκά δώρα, δανεισμένα τάλαντα τα οποία εκείνος όφειλε να τα χρησιμοποιεί για τη δόξα Του Θεού, σαν καλός οικονόμος που φροντίζει για την μεγάλη του οικογένεια, τους φτωχούς και ταλαιπωρημένους αδελφούς του.

 Αν αιχμαλωτισθεί ο νους του ανθρώπου από το χρήμα, τότε υποκύπτει στον ένα από τους τρείς γίγαντες  των παθών: την φιλαργυρία. Οταν ο πλούτος συνδέεται με τη φιλαργυρία, αποτελεί μία μορφή δουλείας της ψυχής και την στρέφει μακριά από Τον Θεό. Ο Απ. Παύλος αποκαλεί την φιλαργυρία ειδωλολατρεία. Το πρόβλημα του πλούσιου νέου της σημερινής περικοπής ήταν ότι ήθελε τον πλούτο γιά τον εαυτό του και ξέχναγε τους φτωχούς και αναγκεμένους συνανθρώπους του. Ηθελε να μπει στην Βασιλεία των ουρανών μαζί με τα λεφτά του.

Υπάρχει μία συγκεχυμένη στάση του σημερινού ανθρώπου απέναντι στο Θεό, στον συνάνθρωπο και στα υλικά αγαθά. Στις Δυτικές κοινωνίες ο πλούτος θεωρήθηκε σαν ευλογία του Θεού, σαν ένα βραβείο που δόθηκε στον άνθρωπο γιά την ευσέβειά του, ο καρπός  της τίμιας εργασίας του.  Οπότε ο πλουτισμός θεωρείται σαν ένα “δικαίωμα”, αλλά και σαν  υποχρέωση του Θεού απέναντι στον καθένα. Στην ορθόδοξη παράδοση τα πράγματα είναι διαφορετικά. Ο αληθινά Ορθόδοξος προσπαθεί να απελευθερωθεί από την τυρρανία των παθών, βλέπει τον Θεό σαν πρόσωπο, σαν πατέρα και σαν φίλο, και οχι σαν δυνάστη και εργοδότη. Τον δε συνάνθρωπό του τον βλεπει σαν αδελφό του και αδελφό του Χριστού και όχι σαν έναν εργάτη ή συνεργάτη.

Σύμφωνα με τους Πατέρες της εκκλησίας η συσσώρευση του πλούτου στους λίγους είναι καρπός της πτώσεως του ανθρώπου. Κατά τον Αγιο Γρηγόριο τον Θεολόγο η ιδιοκτησία, η ανάγκη να έχουμε κάτι δικό μας και να το αυξάνουμε είναι μεταπτωτικό φαινόμενο το οποίο συνδέεται με τα πάθη, την ανασφάλεια και τον φόβο του θανάτου. Ο Θεός σαν δημιουργός του κόσμου έχει εξουσία σε όλα τα υλικά αγαθά τα οποία παρεχώρησε σε μας γιά να ζήσουμε, εφ’ όσον Εκείνος είναι ανενδεής και δεν τα έχει ανάγκη. «Εμείς –μας λέει ο Αγ. Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος- σαν παιδιά του Θεού, έχουμε κοινά δικαιώματα στον αέρα, στον ήλιο, στη θάλασσα αλλά και σε όλα τα άλλα υλικά αγαθά. Επομένως όσοι επιδιώκουν τη συσσώρευση του πλούτου στα χέρια τους με διάφορους τρόπους χάνουν την αίσθηση και της πατρότητας και της αδελφότητας.» Ετσι η Ορθοδοξία δεν στρέφεται εναντίον των υλικών αγαθών, αλλά εναντίον των παθών του ανθρώπου, τα οποία προσπαθεί να θεραπεύσει αποβλέποντας όχι στην “τελευταίαν διαίρεσιν” μετά την πτώσιν, αλλά στην “πρώτην ισονομίαν” που υπήρχε στον Παράδεισο, όπως λέει πάλι ο Αγ. Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος.

Στην περίφημη ομιλία του “προς πλουτούντας”, ο Μέγας Βασίλειος ο Καππαδόκης ερωτά: “Και πως θα ζήσουμε όταν παραιτηθούμε από όλα;” και απαντάει και λέει: “Αυτοί που σκέπτονται συνετώς, αρμόζει να θεωρούν ότι χρησιμοποιούν τον πλούτο γιά να τον οικονομούν κατά Θεόν και όχι γιά να τον απολαμβάνουν. Και όταν τον αποχωρίζονται να χαίρονται σαν να απαλάσσονται από τα ξένα, και όχι να δυσανασχετούν σαν να εγκαταλείπουν τα ιδικά τους... Αλλά όταν εσύ δίδεις χρυσάφι γιά να αποκτήσεις ένα άλογο δεν λυπείσαι, όταν όμως διαθέτης πράγματα φθαρτά και αντ’ αυτών λαμβάνης βασιλείαν ουρανών, δακρύζεις και αρνείσαι Αυτόν που σου τα ζητεί και δεν συγκατατίθεσαι να δώσεις, επινοώντας χίλιες δυό προφάσεις γιά να τα καταναλώσης”.

Αδελφοί μου, στο σημερινό αγωνιώδες ερώτημα των μαθητών του Χριστού «τότε ποιος θα σωθεί;» η απάντηση είναι μία: θα σωθεί εκείνος που κάνει συνεχείς προσπάθειες να απαλλαγεί ανάμεσα στα άλλα και από το πάθος της φιλαργυρίας, με τη βοήθεια του άπειρου ελέους του Κυρίου.

  12th SUNDAY OF MATTHEW

 (The rich young man)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus Christ talks to us about a rich young man’s spiritual condition and its effects on entering the Kingdom of Heaven.

In prior descriptions of rich men, in the parables such as that of the fool rich man and the rich man and poor Lazarus, we heard that they typically lived a life far from God. In today’s Gospel reading however, we hear about a different encounter with another kind of  rich person.

Through the dialogue that developed, we observe a man who refers to Christ with respect, and who is interested in securing the eternal life, who follows the commandments of the Law, and who wants to know whether he will gain entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven through his acts. He states: I didn’t steal, I didn’t kill, I didn’t cheat, I didn’t bear false witness and I loved my neighbor like myself. Christ’s response was unconditional: “If you want to be perfect go sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven”. Once the young man heard those words he became sorrowful and left, for he had many possessions.  Christ then turned to His disciples, and again His words were unconditional as He said: “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God”.

When this man came before Christ, he was seeking reassurance that he had been doing everything well and was expecting to hear he could have eternal life. And in order for Christ to shake him up and awaken him and prove to him that he was still entangled with his greed, He asked for the ultimate sacrifice: to give away all his wealth to the poor. Jesus knew that the young man had forgotten that all his belongings, his wealth, his health, were Godly gifts, loaned to him and meant to be used for the Glory of God.

If one’s mind is entrapped by wealth then he succumbs to greed, one of the three main passions. When wealth is entangled with greed, then it takes on the form of slavery for the soul, and turns it away from God. St. Paul describes greed as idolatry. The biggest challenge for the rich young man in today’s reading was that he wanted all his wealth for himself, forgetting his poor fellow men and hoping to enter Paradise along with his possessions.

Now days, man holds a tangled stance against God, his fellow man and material goods. In Western societies wealth is been considered a blessing from God, a gift given to man for his piousness, a prize for the result of his honest works. Therefore wealth becomes one’s own “right” and he demands it from God. This notion of wealth is quite different in the Orthodox tradition. A true Orthodox Christian constantly struggles to free himself from the tyranny of his passions, one of which is the love of money. He sees God as a Person, as a Father and as a friend and not like a ruler or employer.  The Orthodox Christian looks upon his fellow man also as his brother and a brother of Christ, and not as his worker or a coworker, someone with whom he shares the world.

All the Church Fathers say that the accumulation of wealth by the few, is a result of the fall of man. According to St. Gregory the Theologian, ownership and the need to possess material wealth and an impulse to increase it, is a phenomenon that is connected with our passions, our insecurity and ultimately our fear of death. God, as the creator of the world rules over all material wealth, which He generously provided for us to live, especially since He is self-sufficient and in need of nothing. St John Chrysostom tells us that we, as children of God, all share the same rights over the air, the sun, the seas and the whole God’s creation. Therefore those who attempt to accumulate most of the wealth for themselves loose the sense of brotherhood. Orthodoxy therefore doesn’t condemn material wealth, but it does condemn the passion of greed and tries to cure it not through the “latter division” that started after the Fall from Paradise, but through the “former equality” that existed while in Paradise, as we are told by St. Gregory the Theologian. 

In his famous “Homily to the wealthy”, St Basil the Great from Cappadocia asks: “And how will we live when we forsake all materials?” and gives us the answer: “Those who are wise will realize that they have to manage their wealth according to the will of God and not solely for their pleasure.  And when they are parting from it they should feel joy that they have been exempt from the need to manage it, rather than feeling that they have lost something that belonged to them…..When you pay in gold to buy a horse you are not upset, but when you distribute your material wealth and in return you receive the Kingdom of Heaven you tear up and refuse Him who is asking for it, devising a million excuses to hold on to it.”

My brothers and sisters in Christ, the answer to today’s agonizing question posed by Christ’s disciples “who then can be saved?” is one: they will be saved those who are continuously struggling to rid themselves of the passion of greed through the help of the endless mercy of our Lord.
