Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal First Mode. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

Plagal First Mode.

Gospel Reading

7th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 8:41-56

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Cosmas and Damian the Holy Unmercenaries of Asia, and their mother Theodota

These Saints were from Asia (that is, Asia Minor). After the death of their father, their Christ-loving mother Theodota reared them in piety and in all manner of virtue, and had them instructed in every science, especially that of medicine. This became their vocation, and they went about healing every illness and malady, bestowing healing freely on both men and beasts alike; because of this, they are called "Unmercenaries." And thus, having completed the course of their life, they reposed in peace.

Sunday's Sermon

LUKE’S 7th SUNDAY

Dear Brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today is the Seventh Sunday of Luke’s Gospel readings, and we hear him describe to us in detail two amazing events that took place during our Lord’s life on earth, the cure of the bleeding woman and the raising of Jairus’ daughter. After Jesus Christ was no longer welcomed by the Gadarenes, He returned to the area of Capernaum where He was met by countless people who had come to listen to His Word or to be cured of their ailments. One of the men in the crowd was the ruler of the local synagogue, Jairus whose name in Greek is Fotios. Jairus had an only child, a twelve year old daughter who was very sick and who was about to die. The reality of his daughter’s imminent death, his knowledge of the  irreversibility of death, and his fatherly love were so powerful over this man, who with great pain in his soul fell onto his knees in front of Christ and begged him to save his child.  Sickness and death can change even the most coldhearted man and reveal his weakness and his detachment from God.

Our Christ, who has demonstrated to us God’s love for humanity through all the miracles He has performed through the ages, agreed to go to Jairus’ house to cure his child. As they were heading there, the crowds that had gathered were following them with curiosity to see what will happen.

In between the crowds there was another pained soul, a woman who had a constant flow of blood for twelve years and who was desperate for a cure. The social and religious rules of her time declared this woman unclean and forbid her from entering into the Templeor to touch anyone. Her desperation however had been converted to courage and hope for salvation and as she was walking with the crowd she came close to Christ and touched His garment with faith for a miracle. Our Lord who goes beyond the Mosaic Law, honored the courage of the woman and commended her and named her His daughter and graced her with cure and His Peace. And thus, this woman who has ever since been known as Saint Veroniki, obtained through her strong faith her union with Christ and became a member of the First Church, and out of her gratitude towards our Lord she crafted His statue and placed it in front of her house, so that people could continue to worship Him. And when a herb grew at the base of the statue, Saint Veroniki used it to cure various diseases in the name of our Lord.

After the bleeding woman’s cure, Jesus reached the house of Jairus where by now the girl was dead and everyone was mourning her. Then Jesus said: "Do not weep, she is not dead but sleeping". That is why our Church calls the Graveyards Cemeteries, -from the greek word Κοιμητήρια, meaning a place where people sleep-. Our faith takes literally the words of our Lord and teaches that after His Incarnation death has lost its true meaning, becoming a sleep until the day of the Resurrection of the dead. Those present however, once they heard Him started to laugh and ridiculed Him, and therefore were excluded by the Lord, Who did not allow them to watch the great miracle of the raising of the dead. He took with Him in the room only the child's parents and three disciples, Peter, James and John. There then, He took her by the hand, and called her, saying: "Little girl, arise". And she arose immediately, “her spirit returned," as the gospel says, which means that the soul leaves the body and has consciousness, it exists, and thinks and has feelings. Through this miracle accomplished by our Lord, we were shown that He is the victor of death. The raisings of the daughter of Jairus, the son of the widow of Nain, and of St. Lazarus, proclaim the eschatological situation of the final abolishment of death, during Christ’s Second Coming.

My brothers and sisters, in order for us to meet God, we must have faith and courage, as demonstrated by the bleeding woman. When Divine Grace comes, then man feels freed from those passions that had been torturing him, and he no longer acts under the law of sin and he becomes the Son of God by Grace. Therefore let us pay attention to what is said to us by St. Theofylaktos, Archbishop of Bulgaria, about today’s Gospel:

“The Woman with the issue of blood represents every soul which pours forth bloody and murderous sin. Because each and every sin is the murderer and slayer of the soul. When this soul therefore touches the clothing of Jesus, when it touches that is, His Incarnation, believing that the Son of God took on human flesh, then the soul is healed. And this is possible even if someone should be a ruler of the synagogue, which is if someone has a mind which rules over the many things it has collected in its greed. Then the daughter of that mind, its thought, is sick. But let that mind only call upon Jesus and believe, and his thought will be made whole.”

My brothers and sisters, we too can touch Jesus Christ, we can even place Him within us, if we want. In front of us, on the Holy Altar lays the body of Christ. Each and every one of us has an illness, either of the body or of the soul. If we stand in front of the Holy Chalice with love, reverence, and faith that the Grace of Jesus Christ can cure every ailment and can forgive our sins, then we will hear Him say: “Daughter be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace”.

Protopresbyter, Fr. Konstantinos Manetas

Wisdom of the Fathers

At the same time both signifying that it is easy for Him to raise the dead ... and also teaching us not to fear death; for that it is not death, but is henceforth become a sleep.
