The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19.

Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

When the wise men departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son."

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more." But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaos reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. Sunday after Nativity

On the Sunday that falls on or immediately after the twenty-sixth of this month, we make commemoration of Saints Joseph, the Betrothed of the Virgin; David, the Prophet and King; and James, the Brother of God. When there is no Sunday within this period, we celebrate this commemoration on the 26th.

Saint Joseph (whose name means "one who increases") was the son of Jacob, and the son-in-law - and hence, as it were, the son - of Eli (who was also called Eliakim or Joachim), who was the father of Mary the Virgin (Matt. 1:16; Luke 3:23). He was of the tribe of Judah, of the family of David, an inhabitant of Nazareth, a carpenter by Trade, and advanced in age when, by God's good will, he was betrothed to the Virgin, that he might minister to the great mystery of God's dispensation in the flesh by protecting her, providing for her, and being known as her husband so that she, being a virgin, would not suffer reproach when she was found to be with child. Joseph had been married before his betrothal to our Lady; they who are called Jesus' "brethren and sisters" (Matt. 13:55-56) are the children of Joseph by his first marriage. From Scripture, we know that Saint Joseph lived at least until the Twelfth year after the birth of Christ (Luke 2:41-52); according to the tradition of the Fathers, he reposed before the beginning of the public ministry of Christ.

The child of God and ancestor of God, David, the great Prophet after Moses, sprang from the tribe of Judah. He was the son of Jesse, and was born in Bethlehem (whence it is called the City of David), in the year 1085 before Christ. While yet a youth, at the command of God he was anointed secretly by the Prophet Samuel to be the second King of the Israelites, while Saul - who had already been deprived of divine grace - was yet living. In the thirtieth year of his life, when Saul had been slain in battle, David was raised to the dignity of King, first, by his own tribe, and then by all the Israelite people, and he reigned for forty years. Having lived seventy years, he reposed in 1015 before Christ, having proclaimed beforehand that his son Solomon was to be the successor to the throne.

The sacred history has recorded not only the grace of the Spirit that dwelt in him from his youth, his heroic exploits in war, and his great piety towards God, but also his transgressions and failings as a man. Yet his repentance was greater than his transgresssions, and his love for God fervent and exemplary; so highly did God honour this man, that when his son Solomon sinned, the Lord told him that He would not rend the kingdom in his lifetime "for David thy father's sake" (III Kings 12:12). Of The Kings of Israel, Jesus the Son of Sirach testifies, "All, except David and Hezekias and Josias, were defective" (Ecclus. 49:4). The name David means "beloved."

His melodious Psalter is the foundation of all the services of the Church; there is not one service that is not filled with Psalms and psalmic verses. It was the means whereby old Israel praised God, and was used by the Apostles and the Lord Himself. It is so imbued with the spirit of prayer that the monastic fathers of all ages have used it as their trainer and teacher for their inner life of converse with God. Besides eloquently portraying every state and emotion of the soul before her Maker, the Psalter is filled with prophecies of the coming of Christ. It foretells His Incarnation, "He bowed the heavens and came down" (Psalm 17:9), His Baptism in the Jordan, "The waters saw Thee, O God, The waters saw Thee and were afraid" (76:15), His Crucifixion in its details, "They have pierced My hands and My feet .... They have parted My garments amongst themselves, and for My vesture have they cast lots" (21:16, 18). "For My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink" (68:26), His descent into Hades, "For Thou wilt not abandon My soul in Hades, nor wilt Thou suffer Thy Holy One to see corruption" (15:10) and Resurrection, "Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered" (67:1). His Ascension, "God is gone up in jubilation" (46:5), and so forth.

Anysia the Virgin-martyr of Thessaloniki

This Saint, who was from Thessalonica, was the daughter of pious and wealthy parents, After their death, she passed her life in virginity, serving God by means of good deeds. One day, as she was on her way to church, a pagan soldier approached her and asked her to accompany him to the temple of the idols, but she refused. When he began to drag her with him, she spit in his face and confessed Christ. Filled with anger, he thrust his sword into her side and slew her, in the year 299, during the reign of Maximian.

Because of the Apodosis of the Feast of the Nativity on the 31st of this month, the hymns of Saint Melania the Younger are transferred to this day.

Sunday's Sermon

ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΜΕΤΑ ΤΑ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΑ

               Μέσα απ’τὴν εντονη ζωή, τὸ θόρυβο καὶ τὸ συναγερμὸ των Χριστουγέννων, ανάμεσα στὰ δωρα καὶ τὶς διασκεδάσεις προβάλλει τὸ αιώνιο ἐρώτημα: «που ἐστιν ο τεχθεὶς Βασιλεύς;». Ποιὰ θέση εχει στὴν καρδιά μας ο Βασιλεὺς των Ουρανων; Ποιὰ θέση τοῦ δίνουμε στὰ ενδιαφέροντα καὶ τὰ προβλήματα, στὶς απασχολήσεις μας καὶ τὶς σκέψεις μας; Τί θὰ απαντούσαμε ὡς πρόσωπα, ως κοινωνία, αν μᾶς εθεταν τὸ ερώτημα: «που εστιν ο τεχθεὶς Βασιλεύς;»

  Δυστυχώς, καθημερινά διαπιστώνουμε την απομάκρυνση της ζωής μας από τον τρόπο της ζωής του Χριστού. Το κοσμικό φρόνημα, το προσηλωμένο στα γήινα και τα εφήμερα, θεωρεί πάντοτε ως απειλή το πνεύμα του Ευαγγελίου και την παρουσία του Χριστού ανάμεσα στους ανθρώπους. Γι αυτό και βλέπουμε σήμερα να πληθαίνουν οι φωνές που στρέφονται ενάντια στο Χριστό και την Εκκλησία Του, που θέλουν ει δυνατόν να εξαλείψουν το θρησκευτικό συναίσθημα από τις καρδιές των ανθρώπων, που επιθυμούν να διαμορφώσουν μια κοινωνία δίχως Χριστό, χωρίς ελπίδα Αναστάσεως, εξαρτημένη από την ψευδή ευφορία της τηλεπικοινωνιακής κουλτούρας, και από τη δουλεία του καταναλωτισμού, που εξυπηρετεί και συντηρεί τους ισχυρούς της γης.

  Όσο κι αν μας φαίνεται περίεργο, πάντοτε μέσα στην ανθρώπινη ιστορία υπήρξαν και υπάρχουν άνθρωποι σαν τον Ηρώδη, που θεωρούν τον Χριστό ως απειλή για τα εγκόσμια σχέδιά τους, για τα κεκτημένα δικαιώματά τους και για την εξουσία που ασκούν στους  ανθρώπους. Και γι αυτό δεν είναι λίγοι αυτοί που με μίσος και βίαιο τρόπο καταφέρονται και σήμερα ενάντια στο Χριστό και τους χριστιανούς.

  Από την πρώτη στιγμή της επίγειας παρουσίας του Κυρίου, ο εχθρός του Θεού και του ανθρωπίνου γένους, ο διάβολος, άρχισε τον αγώνα γιά την εξόντωσή Του. Ο Ηρώδης ήταν ο εκτελεστής του σχεδίου. Πλήθος νηπίων σφαγιάσθηκαν στην Βηθλεέμ. Όλες οι δυνάμεις του κακού έπεσαν εναντίον του Χριστού αλλά δεν κατόρθωσαν τίποτε. Διότι στην κρίσιμη ώρα μίλησε ο ουρανός, επενέβη ο Θεός και ο Ιησούς σώθηκε. Έφυγε για την Αίγυπτο. Τι έχει να πει σε μας αυτό το γεγονός; Ότι η εξέλιξη των πραγμάτων στην πορεία της ζωής μας βρίσκεται στα χέρια του Θεού. Και ότι ακόμη κι αν όλη η μανία των οργάνων του σκότους πέσει επάνω μας, δεν μπορεί να καταφέρει εναντίον μας απολύτως τίποτε. Διότι μας προστατεύει ο Κύριος, εφόσον κι εμείς βρισκόμαστε κοντά Του. Ενδιαφέρεται κάθε στιγμή για μας. Δεν αδιαφορεί, όταν βρισκόμαστε σε δυσκολίες και κινδύνους. Στις δύσκολες λοιπόν στιγμές που θα συναντήσουμε στη ζωή μας να μην ξεχάσουμε ποτέ πως έχουμε βοηθό τον παντοδύναμο Θεό. Αυτός που μένει νικητής και θριαμβευτής της ιστορίας είναι ο Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός ο Ναζωραίος. Διότι δεν είναι ένας άνθρωπος που κινδυνεύει, αλλά ο Θεός που σώζει.

  Σήμερα αγαπητοί μου αδελφοί, ο Απόστολος Παύλος μας ομιλεί για το Ευαγγέλιο του Χριστού, το οποίο δεν είναι ανθρώπινο δημιούργημα και εφεύρημα, αλλά καρπός της αποκάλυψης του Κυρίου στον ίδιο και σε ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα. “Σας γνωστοποιώ, αδελφοί”, μας λέει, “οτι τὸ Εὐαγγέλιο ποὺ σας κήρυξα ουκ έστι κατὰ άνθρωπον”, δὲν αποτελεί ανθρώπινη επινόηση, αλλὰ τὸ παρέλαβα κατ᾽ευθείαν μὲ αποκάλυψη του Θεού, ό Ὁποίος απ᾽ ευθείας μου αποκάλυψε τὸν Κύριο Ἰησού.  Θέλει ο Παύλος νὰ καταστήσει  σαφὲς ότι οί αλήθειες του Ευαγγελίου δὲν αποτελουν αποκύημα κάποιων ανθρώπινων συλλογισών αλλὰ αποκάλυψη του ίδιου τού Θεού. 

               Τὰ οσα κήρυξε ο ιδιος αλλὰ καὶ οι αλλοι άγιοι απόστολοι, δὲν ειναι δικά τους λόγια, αλλὰ θεια διδάγματα ποὺ τοὺς τὰ αποκάλυψε ο ίδιος ο Κύριος Ἰησούς Χριστός.

Ο Απόστολος Παυλος ομως δὲν εζησε μαζὶ μὲ τὸν Κύριο κατὰ τὰ τρία χρόνια τῆς δημοσίας δράσεώς του· πως λοιπὸν γνώρισε καὶ κατέγραψε στὶς επιστολές του τὶς αλήθειες της πίστεως; Σ’ αυτὸ ακριβως τὸ ερώτημα μας ἀπαντά ο ίδιος. Μας λέει οτι τὸ Εὐαγγέλιο ποὺ κηρύττει τὸ παρέλαβε μὲ υπερφυσικὲς αποκαλύψεις ποὺ του έκανε ο ίδιος ο Κύριος. Γι’ αυτὸ καὶ αλλου λέει στὸν μαθητή του Τιμόθεο οτι ολη η Ἁγία Γραφὴ ειναι θεόπνευστη. Θέλει δηλαδὴ νὰ του τονίσει ατι δὲν εἶναι απλως ενα ιερὸ βιβλίο, αλλὰ τὸ βιβλίο μέσα απὸ τὸ οποίο μιλάει ό ίδιος ο Θεός. Οί ιεροὶ συγγραφείς απλώς δάνεισαν τὴ γραφίδα τους γιὰ νὰ μιλήσει ὁ Θεός. Τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεύμα φώτιζε τὸ νού τους καὶ κινούσε τὸ χέρι τους.

  Το Ευαγγέλιο του Χριστού είναι ο μεγαλύτερος θησαυρός της ζωής μας, η απάντηση στα ερωτήματά μας, η διέξοδος στ’ αδιέξοδα μας,ο τρόπος της ζωής μας. Άραγε, έχουμε αντιληφθεί αυτή την αλήθεια ή αντιμετωπίζουμε το Ευαγγέλιο ως ένα κοινό βιβλίο σαν όλα τα άλλα που στολίζουν τη βιβλιοθήκη μας; Κάναμε τη μελέτη του Ευαγγελίου καθημερινή ανάγκη της ζωής μας ή περιοριστήκαμε στην επιδερμική προσέγγισή του, μόνο κατά τη θεία Λειτουργία; Διδάξαμε στα παιδιά μας την σπουδαιότητά του, τους μιλήσαμε για τον πλούτο που κρύβει μέσα του, αφιερώσαμε έστω και λίγα λεπτά για να τα κάνουμε να το αγαπήσουν; Μαζεύεται ακόμη η οικογένεια γύρω από το κυριακάτικο τραπέζι γιά να διαβάση το Λόγο του Θεού, προσφέροντας Του ευχαριστία πριν από το γεύμα, ή ασχολείται με τα σπορ ;

  Από αυτόν τον λόγο, όπως διδάσκεται πάντα μέσα στην Εκκλησία, έχει ανάγκη ο σύγχρονος άνθρωπος, προκειμένου να ζήσει, όχι ως σάρκα μόνο, αλλά κυρίως ως πνεύμα. Ο λόγος του Θεού είναι τόσο αναγκαίος για την πνευματική ζωή του ανθρώπου όσο είναι και το ψωμί για την σωματική του συντήρηση. «Άρτω μεν σώμα τρέφεται, λόγω δε Θείω ψυχή στηρίζεται», διδάσκει ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος. Ο άρτος ο εκ του ουρανού καταβάς, είναι τόσο αναγκαίος όσο και ο άρτος ο επιούσιος, μάλλον δε, σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις, ο Θείος Λόγος είναι αναγκαιότερος από την υλική τροφή. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός ποτέ δε μακάρισε τους χορτάτους, αλλ’ αντίθετα, τους έψεξε: ουαί υμίν οι εμπεπλησμένοι, είπε. Μακάρισε όμως τους πεινασμένους, και είπε μακάριοι οι πεινώντες, και μακάρισε εκείνους που ακούνε τον λόγο του Θεού: μακάριοι οι ακούοντες τον λόγο του Θεού, χαρά σ’ εκείνους που έχουν την ευκαιρία να ακούνε, μα και θέλουν να ακούσουν.

  Ας κρατήσουμε αυτά τα λόγια του Χριστού μας αγαπητοί αδελφοί και ας προσπαθήσουμε να βάλουμε μιά καινούργια αρχή, ώστε τον νέο χρόνο που μας έρχεται να βρεθούμε πιό κοντά στον Κύριο και στην αλήθεια της πίστεως.

                                                        SUNDAY AFTER THE NATIVITY

               Amidst our busy life, the noise and agitation of Christmas, between gifts and entertainment, there raises the perennial question, «Where is the newborn King?». What place has in our lives and what position has occupied in our hearts the King of Heaven What would we respond as a person, as a society, to the question: «Where is the newborn King ?»

  Unfortunately, everyday we establish the fact that our lives have been removed from the life of Christ. We are entangled with the chains of earthly things and we perceive the spirit of the Gospel and the presence of our Lord as a threat. This is why we observe nowadays that the voices against Christ and the Church are also getting stronger and they are trying to abolish spirituality from our hearts and instead establish a society without Christ, without hope for Resurrection. A society which is held captive by the culture of media and by the slavery of overconsumption, which supports and sustains the powerful of  the earth. Unfortunately there will always exist men like Herod who reflect of Christ as a threat for the   success of their plans and for their mortal grip over humanity. It is therefore not surprising that even today, these men are full of hatred and violence and go against Christ and the Christians.

  From the very beginning of our Lord’s earthly presence, the enemy of God and of man, the devil, started a battle to eliminate Him. Herod was the first to act out the devil’s plan. Multitudes of infants were murdered in Bethlehem. All the powers of evil tried to exterminate Christ but were unable to do so because at the most crucial time the Heavens spoke, God interfered and Baby Jesus was saved by fleeing to Egypt.

  What does this tell us? That the evolution of events in our life is in the hands of God. And even if all the powers of evil befall upon us, they will not be able to harm us, because we are protected by the Lord as long as we too wish to be with Him. He cares for us every moment and in  particular when we are in trouble or in danger. In the difficult times that we will therefore face in our lives, we should never forget that we have the Almighty God by our side. The one who  remains the victor and triumphant winner of history is our Lord Jesus Christ from Nazareth,  because He is a God who saves.

  Today my dear brothers and sisters, St. Paul tells us about the gospel of Christ .“But I make it known to you brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither  received it from man nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ” (Gal. 1:11-12). Apostle  Paul however did not live with Christ during the three years of His public appearance. How is it possible therefore for him to have known the truths of the faith that are written all over his epistles? The answer is provided by him. He tells us that he received the Gospel he preaches through supernatural revelations by the Lord. And later on we see him telling his disciple Timothy that the Holy Bible in its entirety is God-inspired, therefore highlighting that this is not just a holy book but the book through which God has spoken. The Holy Spirit enlightened the mind of those who wrote it and moved their hands. The Gospel of Christ is the biggest treasure in our lives, the answer to all our questions and the way-out to our stalemate. I wonder, have we ever thought of it as such? Or do we see it as yet another book in our bookcase? Do we study the Gospel daily or do we just wait for a limited interaction during the Liturgy? Did we teach our children about its importance and its wealth?

               Did we spend even just a few minutes to help them love it? Does the family still get together around the Sunday dinner table to read the Word of God and to be thankful to Him, or instead, are its members gone out playing sports?

The Word of God is taught in the Church and man needs it in order to live a life governed by the spirit and not by flesh. The Word of God is as important to man’s spiritual health as bread is to his bodily needs. St. John Chrysostom says “The body is nourished with bread, and the soul is supported by the Divine Word”. The heavenly bread is as vital as the earthly bread, and at times the Word of God can be more significant. It is important to note that Christ never valued those who were full, but instead would scorn them. He did on the other hand bless those who were hungry and those who would listen or wanted to listen to the Word of God.

  Dear brothers and sisters let us make an effort to hold on to these words of Saint Paul and let us try to make a new start as this new year approaches, so that we too can come closer to Jesus Christ and to the truth of our faith.
