MEMORIAL SERVICE

NEXT Saturday, July 27th a 40 day memorial service will be offered for the repose of  the soul of  

Vasilios Galanopoulos.

 Orthros at 10 a.m. and Divine Liturgy at 11 a.m.

 NEXT Sunday, July 28th a 5 year memorial service will be offered for Efthymios Nassiopoulos. 

The coffee hour will be kindly hosted by the Nassiopoulos & Milas families.

             Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church Summer Retreat for our youth, ages 4 to 10, on Monday, August 5, 2019 through and including, Friday, August 9, 2019. 

     Check out our website at www.dormitionchurch.org for additional details regarding the daily programs for each day or pick up a program at the Pangari.      

  Please speak to Father Anthony for the specific time and details.  Father is organizing the retreat along with some assistance from GOYA and the PTO.  Exciting activities are planned for your children.

  The price per child is $50 in total for all the days.  A maximum cost per family is $100.00. 

Thanks to generous donors, we have funds available for parents who may need assistance with the fee.

As a reminder, we have complimentary tickets and transportation for "Greek Heritage Night" at Fenway Park, on Monday, August 5th.  The Boston Red Sox will be playing the Kansas City Royals.   We are reaching out to the Youth of our Parish, Parents and Parishioners.  Let's show how proud our Dormition Church is of it's Greek Heritage.  Deadline for reservations is Friday, July 26th.  Please don't miss out.  A big "Thank You" to Bill Galatis for the complimentary tickets and transportation.

THE DORMITION FAMILY TABLE

  Our Dormition Family Table will take place every 1st Wednesday of the month.  The next one will be served on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 from 4 p.m.—6 p.m.  We are looking for volunteers to help cook and serve.  Cooking starts at 2:00 p.m.

 Mark your calendars: On Sunday August 11th, instead of a Sermon Fr. Anthony will have “Questions and Answers”.  

 Any questions relating to the Gospel reading, scriptural reading and personal spiritual life.

  FESTIVAL

           Once again our festival is fast approaching.  Before you know it, the festival weekend of September 6, 7 and 8th will be upon us.  So, now is the time to think how are we going to help our church.  

           We can help in many ways! We all know the drill by now.   We can either help during the week of the festival by skewering kabobs, cutting vegetables or by putting the final touches together that will help this year's festival be another success.  

Most help will be needed during the 3 day weekend in various areas!  

We can also help by donating items from the festival item list or by putting an ad in our festival ad book, as soon as possible. A 20% discount is offered on ads placed prior to 7/31/19. Anything you decide to do will be greatly appreciated and beneficial. Please let us know by calling the church office, so we can mark you down. DONATIONS NEEDED FOR THE ALTAR FUND

2 Icons— Starting September the New Ecclesiastical Year, the theme of our Community will be “Welcoming Stranger’s and Children.”  We will place two (2) new Icons on the sides of the Narthex arch.    The Icon of Hospitality of Abraham and the Icon of Christ and the Children.  Fr. Anthony is looking for Donors for each Icon. The icons are $1500.00 each. 

Video Camera—Fr. Anthony is looking for a donor to a video camera for recording and broadcasting Church Services and Annual Church events.  The video camera cost is $3000.00.

John and Symeon the Fool for Christ

These Saints were from the city of Edessa in Mesopotamia and flourished during the reign of Justin the Younger (565-578). After a pilgrimage to Jerusalem they were moved with a desire to forsake the world; they were tonsured monks by the Abbot Nicon, and soon after left the monastery to struggle together in the wilderness near the Dead Sea. When they had passed a little more than thirty years together in silence and prayer, Symeon, having reached the heights of dispassion, departed for Emesa in Syria, where he passed the rest of his life playing the fool, saving many souls from sin while hiding his sanctity with seemingly senseless behavior. He reposed in 570; by the providence of God, John, who had remained in the wilderness, departed soon after.

Paraskeve the Righteous Martyr of Rome

Saint Paraskeve, who was from a certain village near Rome, was born to pious parents, Agatho and Politia. Since she was born on a Friday (in Greek, Paraskeve), she was given this name, which means "preparation" or "preparedness" (compare Matt. 27:62, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54, and John 19:31, where 'Friday' is called "the day of the preparation"). From childhood she was instructed in the sacred letters and devoted herself to the study of the divine Scriptures, while leading a monastic life and guiding many to the Faith of Christ. During the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was apprehended because she was a Christian and was urged to worship the idols, but she answered with the words of Jeremias: "Let the gods that have not made heaven and the earth perish from off the earth" (Jer. 10:11). Because of this she endured exceedingly painful torments, and was beheaded in the year 140. The faithful pray to her for the healing of eye ailments.

Dormition of St. Anna, mother of the Theotokos

According to tradition, Anna, the ancestor of God, lived for sixty-nine years, and her spouse Joachim, for eighty; according to one account, Saint Joachim died two years before Saint Anna. The Theotokos had been orphaned of both her parents already when she was eleven years of age, when she was living in the Temple (see Sept. 8 and Nov. 21). Saint Anna is invoked for conceiving children, and for help in difficult childbirth.

5th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 10:1-10

Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, "Who will ascend into heaven?" (that is, to bring Christ down) or "Who will descend into the abyss?" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved.

At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way. And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.

Last Week’s Sermon

“The light of the World”

  Dear brothers and sisters in Christ 

           In last weeks gospel reading we see Christ talking to his disciples and explaining their mission in life.   In the past we have said that the meaning is very important in life. 

 We have said that without meaning we lose our way in life. Every one of us has a unique purpose in life.

   Different stages of our life have different meanings but we also have a common meaning and a purpose in life.  No matter how old we get we still desire more life.  Life is the goal of our existence and Christ came and offered exactly that. He offered us abundant life.  He also said that he is the light of the world and that without Him we will be sitting in darkness.

 

  But today dear brothers and sisters He has something even more special for us.  We know that he is the life and the light of the world but today he talks to his disciples and in fact he is talking to us and tells us that we are the light of the world.

 This is a great honor but also a huge responsibility. He calls us to be his disciples.

 The Christianity we know mostly is about worship.  We come to church we light our candle we sit in the pews we listen to the prayers of the Liturgy and the sermon and we go back home to our daily life.

   But Christ is asking more than that.  He is asking us today to become his disciples and apostles in the world.  He wants us to be illumined with his light and shine in the world.  He wants us to keep his commandments but he also wants us to teach others by the example of our lives.

     Κήρυγμα της περασμένης Εβδομάδας

 “Το φώς του κόσμου”

 Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές εν Χριστώ 

           Την περασμένη εβδομάδα στήν ανάγνωση του Ευαγγελίου είδαμε το Χριστό να μιλάει στους μαθητές του και να εξηγεί την αποστολή τους στη ζωή. 

 Στο παρελθόν είπαμε ότι το να υπάρχει νόημα στη ζωή είναι πολύ σημαντικό.  Έχουμε πει ότι χωρίς νόημα χάνουμε το δρόμο μας στη ζωή. Ο καθένας μας έχει ένα μοναδικό σκοπό στη ζωή.  Τα διαφορετικά στάδια της ζωής μας έχουν διαφορετικό νόημα, αλλά έχουμε επίσης ένα κοινό νόημα και ένα σκοπό στη ζωή.  Ανεξάρτητα του πόσο μεγαλώνουμε επιθυμούμε πάντα περισσότερη ζωή.

 Η ζωή είναι ο στόχος της ύπαρξής μας και ο Χριστός ήρθε και πρόσφερε ακριβώς αυτό.  Μας έδωσε άφθονη ζωή.  Είπε επίσης ότι  είναι το φως του κόσμου και ότι χωρίς αυτόν θα καθόμαστε στο σκοτάδι.  Αλλά σήμερα αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές  έχει κάτι ακόμα πιο ξεχωριστό για μας.

 Ξέρουμε ότι Αυτός είναι η ζωή και το φως του κόσμου, αλλά σήμερα μιλάει με τους μαθητές του και στην πραγματικότητα μιλάει μαζί μας και μας λέει ότι εμείς είμαστε το φως του κόσμου.  Αυτό είναι μεγάλη τιμή αλλά και μία τεράστια ευθύνη. Μας ζητά να είμαστε μαθητές του.

 Ο χριστιανισμός που γνωρίζουμε κυρίως αφορά τη λατρεία.  Ερχόμαστε στην εκκλησία ανάβουμε το κερί μας, καθόμαστε στα καθίσματα, ακούμε τις προσευχές της Λειτουργίας και του κηρύγματος και επιστρέφουμε στην καθημερινή μας ζωή.  Αλλά ο Χριστός ζητά κάτι περισσότερο από αυτό.

 Μας ζητά σήμερα να γίνουμε μαθητές του και απόστολοι στον κόσμο. Θέλει να φωτιστούμε με το φως του και τη λάμψη του στον κόσμο.  Θέλει να τηρήσουμε τις εντολές του, αλλά θέλει επίσης να διδάξουμε τους άλλους με το παράδειγμα της ζωής μας.
