Easter 2020

Paschal Message To the Devout Clergy and Laity of the Metropolis of Boston

My brothers and sisters in the household of God,

As we celebrate Easter during this year's unprecedented pandemic, we find ourselves in a position very similar to that experienced by Christ's disciples during that first Easter. They were, like all of us today, gathered together inside a house with the doors shut. They were, as are we today, "afraid” (John 20:19, 26). But they were not alone. Neither are we.

"When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples had assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, 'Peace be with you!" (John 20:19)

My dear brothers and sisters, we are not alone! Christ is in our midst. Remember that He assured us that "where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them" (Mt. 18:20). He who believes is never alone. He who prays is never alone. This is so because we pray to God the Father, with Christ, in the Holy Spirit. We pray in communion with the saints as they ceaselessly pray for us. Even if the present circumstances prevent us, for the time being, from gathering together in our churches, be assured that the grace and blessing of God will be with us as we make our homes and our hearts His Holy Church.

Therefore, "do not be afraid” (Mark 5:36; 6:50). For although there will always be darkness and sorrow in the world such as that which we have experienced in the past few weeks, we firmly believe that Christ, who rose from the dead and has dominion over the living and the dead, has overcome the world: "In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

May the unwaning Light of the Risen Lord radiate in your hearts and bring you peace! Christos Anesti!

With Archpastoral love,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Chris,

Beloved members of Dormition of the Virgin Mary

 Greek Orthodox Church,

 Christ is Risen!

It is with the Joy of our resurrected Lord that I am writing to you this letter of seasonal greeting. Our joy is not the joy of this world but the joy of knowing that our Risen Lord Jesus has conquered sin, sickness and death. The joy of the resurrection is a joy that comes from our communion with Christ and has nothing to do with this world. There is only one thing that hinders us as Christians from participating fully in the joy of the resurrection. It is that the world is in pain and we are hurting with our brothers and sisters in the midst of the joy of the Resurrection.

This is a time of prayer because the only way we can help the pain of the world is by prayer. If you would like to do something to alleviate the pain of the world, carry the suffering of your neighbors and commune your sorrowful heart to Christ in prayer, then return and share your joy with others.

That is the meaning of the Resurrection. It brings joy to those who are sorrowful.

As we travelled further and further in history from the apostolic times, Pascha became Easter, symbolized by the warm fuzzy joy of the Easter bunnies and chicks. The world around us replaced the deep internal Joy of Resurrection with the cheap external joy of customs and habits that developed as Christians went further from the reality of our Lord walking on earth.

This year the Lord came to our homes and found us in isolation and fear of the world that had entertained us so well and so long even while it drove us away from his Love.

Dear brothers and sisters we know that He has loved us first and His Love is eternal and that He never gives up even on those who had forgotten Him and His sacrificial Love. He loves even those who do not know him and never had a chance to meet him. There are many in the world today that are going through the fearful time alone and we are blessed to have the comforting Holy Spirit guide us through the stormy sea of this paralyzed world.

Share the light and the joy of your risen Lord with those who are in need of comfort, love, care and His saving presence.

Christ is Risen!

May the Lord bless you with joy that comes from his heart to ours.

With pastoral love and care,

 Fr. Anthony Tandilyan

Thomas Sunday

Though the doors were shut at the dwelling where the disciples were gathered for fear of the Jews on the evening of the Sunday after the Passover, our Saviour wondrously entered and stood in their midst, and greeted them with His customary words, "Peace be unto you." Then He showed unto them His hands and feet and side; furthermore, in their presence, He took some fish and a honeycomb and ate before them, and thus assured them of His bodily Resurrection. But Thomas, who was not then present with the others, did not believe their testimony concerning Christ's Resurrection, but said in a decisive manner, "Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe." Wherefore after eight days, that is, on this day, when the disciples were again gathered together and Thomas was with them, the Lord Jesus came while the doors were shut, as He did formerly. Standing in their midst, He said, "Peace be unto you"; then He said to Thomas, "Bring hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not unbelieving, but believing."

And Thomas, beholding and examining carefully the hands and side of the Master, cried out with faith, "My Lord and my God." Thus he clearly proclaimed the two natures - human and divine - of the God-man (Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-29).

This day is called Antipascha (meaning "in the stead of Pascha," not "in opposition to Pascha") because with this day, the first Sunday after Pascha, the Church consecrates every Sunday of the year to the commemoration of Pascha, that is, the Resurrection.

Basil the Holy Martyr Bishop of Amasea

This Saint was Bishop of Amasia in Pontus, in the days of Licinius (reigned 308-324), fellow Emperor and brother-in-law of Saint Constantine the Great. Licinius' wife Constantia, sister of Saint Constantine, had as handmaid a virgin named Glaphyra. When it became known that Licinius had conceived a sinful desire for her. Constantia secretly sent Glaphyra away to the East. Coming to Amasia, she took refuge with Saint Basileus. When Licinius learned of this, he furiously commanded that both be brought before him. When the soldiers came for them, however, Saint Glaphyra had already departed to the Lord; she is also commemorated this day. Saint Basileus was taken alone to Nicomedia, where he was beheaded. His body was cast into the sea, but through divine revelation was found again and brought back to Amasia.

Elizabeth the Wonderworker

Saint Elizabeth was born in Heraclea of Thrace. She lived in virginity and exhausted herself with ascetical labours and every kind of hardship from the time of her youth, and was deemed worthy of the grace of wonderworking from God; she reposed in peace in Constantinople in the middle of the fifth century.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 146.5;134.3.
Great is our Lord, and great is his power.
Verse: Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.

The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 5:12-20.

In those days, many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life."

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

Thomas Sunday
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For though the Apostles themselves modestly ascribe it all to this cause, declaring that they did these things in the name of Christ, yet at the same time the life and noble conduct of the men helped to produce this effect. "And believers were more added unto the Lord, multitudes both of men and women." Observe, how he now no longer tells the number of them that believe; at such a rate was the faith making way even to an immense multitude, and so widely was the Resurrection proclaimed. So then "the people magnified them:" but they were now no longer lightly to be despised as once they were: for in a little moment, at a single turn of the scale, such have been the effects produced by the fisherman and by the publican! Earth was become a heaven, for manner of life, for boldness of speech, for wonders, for all besides; like Angels were they looked upon with wonder:
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 12 on Acts IV, 4th Century
