This meeting will be in person at the upper hall but in a socially distanced way due to COVID-19 restrictions. Everyone will be wearing masks. Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Holy Father John the Righteous, disciple of St. Gregory of Decapolis

This Saint took up the monastic life from his youth and became a disciple of Saint Gregory of Decapolis (see Nov. 20). After his elder, Saint Gregory, reposed (in the first half of the ninth century), he came to Jerusalem and finally reposed in peace in the Monastery of Saint Chariton.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." This Week’s Sermon

Dear brothers and sisters.

Today we have a beautiful Gospel and a wonderful saint. The Gospel teaches us about two kinds of kingdoms and two kinds of powers, the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of this world. Both of these kingdoms are offering power and authority to us, humans. The kingdom of Heaven and the power and the authority that come with it are very different from the kingdom and the power that the kingdoms of this world offers.

We may think that this is not a difficult thing to understand and exercise in our lives, but quite frankly it is the most difficult task for humans. Just remember that when Jesus was in the desert one out of three temptations was an offer of power over the kingdoms of the world. The demon asked him to worship him and promised power over the kingdoms of the world. Christ refused to do it by telling the devil and reminding us that we should worship only God and that the only true source of authentic power is God.

We know that confusing the right power with the wrong power is very easy because we see it in today’s Gospel. Two of Christ's disciples come to him and ask him if they can sit by his side when he comes into his kingdom. Christ explains to them that only the Father gives this kind of power to us.

Later, on Holy Thursday he showed them the difference between the authority that comes with the kingdom of God and the corrupt authority that comes with the power of this world. He also showed his disciples what to do in order to get the right authority.

On Holy Thursday he put on an apron, bent down, and washed the feet of his disciples. Then he said to them, that if they would like to be in His kingdom they should do the same towards each other. He said that in His kingdom those who would like to be first should serve the others. But this is not an easy thing to do. Serving others without condition requires a lot of courage. For that, we have the example of Mary of Egypt. Who shows us that with the power of God we can have enough courage to transform our lives.

Mary was a harlot, the worst kind you can imagine. She was so bad that she could not enter a church in Jerusalem. We do not know what the conditions of her life were before she became a prostitute and what were the reasons for it. But we know one thing that with the power of the Holy Spirit and very hard work she became the holiest person of her time.

In modern times we do not believe anymore that it is possible to become a saint and obtain the authentic power of service and love but Marry of Egypt and the thief on the cross prove us otherwise.

When I look at this congregation I know that there are many saints sitting in those pews. You may not believe me but that is Ok. Most importantly however I see a lot of candidates including myself that if we are not there yet we can surely do it.

So let us pray with the psalmist saying to God: “Sprinkle me with hyssop and I shall be pure, cleanse me and I will be whiter than snow”.

Κήρυγμα της Εβδομάδας

Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές.

Σήμερα έχουμε ένα όμορφο Ευαγγέλιο και έναν υπέροχο άγιο. Το Ευαγγέλιο μας διδάσκει για δύο είδη βασιλείων και δύο είδη εξουσιών, τη βασιλεία των ουρανών και τη βασιλεία αυτού του κόσμου. Και τα δύο αυτά βασίλεια προσφέρουν δύναμη και εξουσία σε εμάς τους ανθρώπους. Η βασιλεία του Ουρανού και η εξουσία που πηγάζει από αυτήν είναι πολύ διαφορετικές από τη βασιλεία και τη δύναμη που προσφέρουν τα βασίλεια αυτού του κόσμου.

Μπορούμε να πιστέψουμε ότι αυτό δεν είναι ένα δύσκολο πράγμα να καταλάβουμε και να ασκήσουμε στη ζωή μας, αλλά ειλικρινά αυτό είναι το πιο δύσκολο έργο για τον άνθρωπο. Απλά θυμηθείτε ότι όταν ο Ιησούς ήταν στην έρημο, ένας από τους τρεις πειρασμούς ήταν μια προσφορά εξουσίας πάνω στα βασίλεια του κόσμου.

Ο δαίμονας του ζήτησε να τον λατρέψει και υποσχέθηκε εξουσία πάνω από τα βασίλεια του κόσμου. Ο Χριστός αρνήθηκε να το κάνει λέγοντας στον διάβολο και υπενθυμίζοντας μας ότι πρέπει να λατρεύουμε μόνο τον Θεό και ότι οι μόνες αληθινές πηγές πραγματικής δύναμης είναι ο Θεός.

Γνωρίζουμε ότι το να συγχέουμε τη σωστή εξουσία με την λανθασμένη εξουσία είναι πολύ εύκολο γιατί το βλέπουμε στο σημερινό Ευαγγέλιο. Δύο από τους μαθητές του Χριστού έρχονται σε αυτόν και τον ρωτούν αν μπορούν να κάθήσουν δίπλα του όταν έρθει στη βασιλεία του. Ο Χριστός τους εξηγεί ότι μόνο ο Πατέρας μας δίνει αυτή τη δύναμη.

Αργότερα, την Μεγάλη Πέμπτη τους έδειξε τη διαφορά μεταξύ της εξουσίας που έρχεται με τη βασιλεία του Θεού και της διεφθαρμένης εξουσίας που έρχεται με τη δύναμη αυτού του κόσμου. Έδειξε επίσης στους μαθητές του τι να κάνουν για να πάρουν τη σωστή εξουσία.

Τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη έβαλε μια ποδιά, έσκυψε κάτω και έπλυνε τα πόδια των μαθητών του. Τότε τους είπε ότι αν θέλουν να είναι στη βασιλεία του, θα πρέπει να κάνουν το ίδιο ο ένας προς τον άλλον. Ότι στο βασίλειό του εκείνοι που θα ήθελαν να είναι πρώτοι πρέπει να υπηρετούν τους άλλους. Αλλά αυτό δεν είναι εύκολο πράγμα. Το να υπηρετείς τους άλλους χωρίς όρους απαιτεί πολύ θάρρος. Σε αυτό έχουμε το παράδειγμα της Μαρίας της Αιγύπτου. Η οποία μας δείχνει ότι με τη δύναμη του Θεού μπορούμε να έχουμε αρκετό θάρρος για να μεταμορφώσουμε τη ζωή μας.

Η Μαρία ήταν μια πόρνη, το χειρότερο είδος που μπορεί να φανταστεί κάποιος. Ήταν τόσο κακή που δεν μπορούσε να εισέλθει σε μια εκκλησία στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Δεν γνωρίζουμε ποιες ήταν οι συνθήκες της ζωής της πριν γίνει πόρνη και ποιοι ήταν οι λόγοι γι αυτό. Αλλά γνωρίζουμε ένα πράγμα, ότι με τη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος και πολύ σκληρή δουλειά έγινε το πιο ιερό πρόσωπο της εποχής της. Στη σύγχρονη εποχή μας δεν πιστεύουμε πια ότι είναι δυνατό να γίνει κάποιος άγιος και να αποκτήσει την αυθεντική δύναμη της υπηρεσίας και της αγάπης αλλά η Μαρία και ο ληστής στο σταυρό μας αποδεικνύουν το αντίθετο.

Όταν κοιτάω αυτή την εκκλησία, γνωρίζω ότι υπάρχουν πολλοί άγιοι που κάθονται σε αυτούς τους πάγκους. Μπορεί να μην με πιστεύετε, αλλά αυτό είναι εντάξει. Το πιο σημαντικό, όμως, είναι ότι βλέπω πολλούς υποψηφίους, συμπεριλαμβανομένου και εμού, ότι εάν δεν έχουμε φτάσει ακόμα εκεί, μπορούμε να το κάνουμε.

Ας προσευχηθούμε, λοιπόν, με τον Βασιλιά Δαυίδ να λέει στον Θεό: «Ραντίστε με με υσσώπο και θα είμαι καθαρός, καθαρίστε με και θα είμαι πιο λευκός από το χιόνι».
