Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Mode

Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today

The Pharisees were an ancient and outstanding sect among the Jews known for their diligent observance of the outward matters of the Law. Although, according to the word of our Lord, they "did all their works to be seen of men" (Matt. 23:5), and were hypocrites (ibid. 23: 13, 14, 15, etc.), because of the apparent holiness of their lives they were thought by all to be righteous, and separate from others, which is what the name Pharisee means. On the other hand, Publicans, collectors of the royal taxes, committed many injustices and extortions for filthy lucre's sake, and all held them to be sinners and unjust. It was therefore according to common opinion that the Lord Jesus in His parable signified a virtuous person by a Pharisee, and a sinner by a Publican, to teach His disciples the harm of pride and the profit of humble-mindedness.

Since the chief weapon for virtue is humility, and the greatest hindrance to it is pride, the divine Fathers have set these three weeks before the Forty-day Fast as a preparation for the spiritual struggles of virtue. This present week they have called Harbinger, since it declares that the Fast is approaching; and they set humility as the foundation for all our spiritual labors by appointing that the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee be read today, even before the Fast begins, to teach, through the vaunting of the Pharisee, that the foul smoke of self-esteem and the stench of boasting drives away the grace of the Spirit, strips man of all his virtue, and casts him into the pits of Hades; and, through the repentance and contrite prayer of the Publican, that humility confers upon the sinner forgiveness of all his wicked deeds and raises him up to the greatest heights.

This Saint was the son of one of the foremost princes in Constantinople, and was originally a consul and first among the Emperor's private counselors. Then, in 784, he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople by the Sovereigns Irene and her son Constantine Porphyrogenitus. He convoked the Seventh Ecumenical Council that upheld the holy icons, and became the boast of the Church and a light to the clergy. He reposed in 806.

You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 3:10-15.

TIMOTHY, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at lconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

If there is a moral quality almost completely disregarded and even denied today, it is indeed humility. The culture in which we live constantly instills in us the sense of pride, of self-glorification, and of self-righteousness ... Even our churches - are they not imbued with that same spirit of the Pharisee? Do we not want our every contribution, every 'good deed,' all the we do 'for the Church' to be acknowledged, praised, publicized? ... How does one become humble? The answer, for a Christian, is simple: by contemplating Christ..."

It is possible for those who have come back again after repentance to shine with much lustre, and oftentimes more than those who have never fallen at all, I have demonstrated from the divine writings. ● Upon arrival at the church we should all open our red liturgy books and sing and read along with our chanters. The ancient tradition of our church is for all of us to fully participate in the Divine Liturgy.

● Attention all Parish Council Members and Youth Workers: You should be receiving new email notifications from Sterling for training and/or screening. Please keep an eye out for those emails.

CHURCH REMINDERS 

Wearing masks is now optional in the church and throughout the community center. Those who are feeling sick should stay at home. We will continue to live-stream our church services.

RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION

Holy Communion is offered to those baptized Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves for the reception of the Sacrament by prayer and fasting. Blessed Bread is available for all our visitors at the very end of the Divine Liturgy. Our Sunday School students receive Holy Communion first and then we will approach from the center aisles, starting with the front pews, one pew at a time.

Holy Trinity Philoptochos announces the 2024  Father George Liacopulos Scholarship for all high school seniors.  Deadline for submission of application materials  is May 1, 2024. Applications will be available at the church office, Sunday School,  or from Philoptochos. FESTIVAL COMMITTEE MEETING

The festival committee will meet via Zoom on Monday, February 26th at 7:00 pm.

BIBLE STUDY

Our bible study group will meet on Tuesday, March 19th at 7:00 via zoom. 

LEADERSHIP RETREAT 

This retreat is for parish council members, Philoptochos board members, and all the ministry leaders of the parish. The retreat will be on Thursday, February 29th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm., in the Fellowship Hall. More information to follow.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF

YOUTH SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

After Sunday School and/or the Divine Liturgy, all of the children are to stay in the Fellowship Hall with their parents. The gym, classrooms and church areas will be off limits to the children.

SPECIAL TLC ANNOUNCEMENT

In order to ensure the safety of all our TLC children, the following procedures are being implemented effective immediately. During TLC school hours (Monday-Friday, 6:45 a. to 5:30 pm) all parishioners must be either buzzed in through the front door of the community center or must be checked in through the TLC main entrance. Any parishioner who has a key or fob to our facility must follow the same procedures.

MEMORIALS

If you are planning a family memorial, please contact the church office far in advance of the date.

PARKING

Due to safety regulations, please do not park cars along the curb in front of the church and the community center during church services and other events. Thank you!
