Dear Holy Trinity Parishioners,

We are hoping that all of you are doing well.  However, if you are having any problems, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.  We are continuing our virtual weekly meetings to stay connected through these changing times, so that we may respond in the best ways for all to continue to pray together, while we are physically separated, and to support anyone in need.

Many thanks to Father Jon, Presbytera Barbara, George, and Makrina for keeping our services and prayers going and helping us to participate through the live broadcasts.  We are aware that many of you do not have access to Facebook and we are exploring ways to ensure that everyone who has internet can join in.

We have been blessed with generous donations from our parishioners and we thank you for remembering our little church during this difficult time.  We have also received a generous donation from the John & Effie Lagadinos family to help our Parish.  They are supporting the communities of the Metropolis, completely on their own, since they know that our church incomes will decrease.  All your donations, large and small, are greatly appreciated now more than ever.

Again, we would like to stress that we are here for you.  If you need anything or know of anyone who is in need, please do not hesitate to contact Fr. Jon (frjon234@gmail.com | 910-685-0080), John Carson (jcarsonmd@gmail.com |(714) 658-5867) or Jaye Mendros-Goulet, (eros1989@yahoo.com |(207) 956-8650).

On behalf of the entire Parish Council, we want to thank all of you for your love, support, and kind words.

May God be with you and your families,

Parish Council

Pastoral Message

04/05/2020

Dear Spiritual Family,

In these most unusual times, we need God and each other more than ever!  As the state is delayed in responding to our request, George, Makrina and I will continue to share our beautiful services with you!  Please go to the church Facebook page at the scheduled times this week: Sunday, Orthros/Liturgy 9/10 AM; Monday, Great Compline, 6:30 PM; Wednesday, Pre-Sanctified Liturgy 5:30 PM.  Jesus is the anchor of our hope as we approach Holy Week.  The Lenten Journey of 2020 will be remembered!  Let it be remembered as a time our Holy Trinity Church pulled together in spirit and in truth to serve the living God.  And however we celebrate Pascha, let us celebrate with great joy the life-saving resurrection of Christ!  I will continue to update everyone on email.  God love you all.

Love always,

Fr. Jon

Message from Presbytera Barbara

04/05/2020

Dear Parish Family,

Father Jon and I pray that you and your families are faring well during these unique and trying times.

Since we are all home and adjusting to our new reality, it’s more important than ever to stay connected with each other, the Church, and Christ our God. We are thankful to be able to share our church services online through FB. Please join in whenever you can! Since parents have now become homeschool teachers, let’s not forget to include worship as part of your daily “school” routine. This is the perfect opportunity to make Christ real in our children’s lives, and to model this need with our own devotion. I truly believe that we as human beings can see that we have always needed God, and now more than we ever!

As part of your daily routine, standing as a family and praying is a wonderful way to begin and end each day.

Since most of us have smart phones, computers, and tablets, I have included a photo of my spiritual apps. You will see the GOArch Daily Readings Lite and extended versions. These are wonderful tools for following the church calendar and daily prayer. You will also see the Orthodox Study Bible. There is a $10 cost to this one, which I have on my phone. The Bible is always with me. On the bottom row is Vimatarissa. This app has sayings from pious elders and saints of the Church. The next one is a way to access Ancient Faith Radio, with their many discussions and current topics from our point of view as Orthodox Christians. The last one is a link to Ages Initiatives, which has the services laid out for us, as well as music for them. I’m sure there are many other outlets and apps, so please share some with all of us.

Remember to pray together, for each other, and to keep in touch with each other. We are a community of believers and in these difficult times, keeping our faith alive may be what carries us through. It is certainly helping me. I look forward to the time when we will all be able to meet and worship in God’s house, our church. Let us not forget, though, that our homes are the “little Church.” We have so many resources, but the very best one is prayer. Let us pray unceasingly with one another (in spirit and online), and for one another.

May our Panaghia protect us and intercede for us, and may Christ our God save us!

With love,

Presbytera Barbara

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Mode

Although the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers guarded Your most pure body, You arose on the third day, O Savior, giving life to the world. For this reason, the heavenly powers cried out to you, O Giver of Life: Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your kingdom! Glory to Your dispensation, only Lover of Mankind!

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. Mary of Egypt in the Plagal Fourth Mode

In thee the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up thy cross, thou didst follow Christ, and by thy deeds thou didst teach us to overlook the flesh, for it passeth away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Mary, thy spirit rejoiceth with the Angels.

Apolytikion for the Church in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Evlogitós i, Hristé o Theós imón, o pansófous tous alís anadíxas, katapémpsas aftí to Pnévma to ágion, ke di’ aftón tin ikouménin saginéfsas, filánthrope, dóxa si.

Blessed are You, O Christ our God who, by sending down the Holy Spirit upon them, made the fishermen wise and through them, illumined the world, and to You the universe is ever drawn. O Loving God, Glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin; instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Epistle Reading

First Mode.

Ἀδελφοί, Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν, διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς, οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν, οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, οὐδὲ διʼ αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. Εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα ταύρων καὶ τράγων, καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους, ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι;

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.
