September 2020

On the Ecclesiastical New Year and New Beginnings

September 1 is the Ecclesiastical New Year!  This past year has challenged everyone.  Life during a pandemic is muted, cautious, and worrisome.  The good news for our community is that our area is doing fairly well and our Holy Trinity Church family has been spared.  Let us observe some challenges and the solutions.

Challenge – Multimedia usage

We were blessed to receive a good sound system via donation this summer.  The challenge is that Facebook Live does not transmit the sound properly.

Solution

In the Ecclesiastical New Year (ENY) we will acquire a device that connects the sound board to the phone.  The good news is we will be back on the air soon.  This may take some adjusting, so please be patient.

Also, we have the opportunity to develop our multimedia presence online.  Fr. Steven, who is an IT graphics design expert, has offered to help us set up a more permanent presence online!  With just three cameras and a laptop computer dedicated to broadcasting our liturgical life, we can have a regular and very polished presence on UTube.  This can be done with a minimum expense.  If you are interested in helping donate or helping with this ministry, please contact me.

Challenge – Liturgical Life at home and in church

Liturgy keeps us connected to God in a profound and grace filled way.  The new reality of Liturgical Life requires us to rethink and respond in a positive way.  The only universally accessible resources for Liturgical life are agesinitiatives.com and the new Liturgy Hymnal.  Thus, our participation at home and at church are very much needed.

Solution

In the ENY we are going to distribute a copy of the new Liturgy Hymnal to all who wish to have one.  This will be your own copy in which you can place your name in the front cover.  Please bring it with you to church or use it from home.  Initially, we will give one book to each adult and one book for the children of each family.  If we need to acquire more books in the future, please speak with me if you want to donate additional books.  Over time we will come to love and appreciate the effort made to produce the books and become very familiar with the text and music.  For those who must be at home, I have begun home visitations to bring communion to everyone.

Challenge – Sunday Church School / Youth Ministry

Covid19 has caused everyone to think of the safety and well-being of our youth.  At this writing, it is not responsible to place youth in very close proximity to one another, even with a mask.  Thus, Sunday Church School in a classroom setting is suspended until further notice.  The Sunday Church School must be transformed to accommodate social distancing and learning the Orthodox Faith from home.

Solution

In the ENY, Stephan Kroger and I will be setting up hands on events with proper social distancing for youth and adults.  Some of these will be field trips on Saturdays or after church on Sunday.  Some will take place at church after Liturgy.  Most of the events will be family events with youth and adults participating.  All events will be announced and publicized ahead of time for maximum participation.  The one mountain hike event we did in July with the GOYA youth was well received and a joy to participate in.

My hope is to prepare a list of resources for parents/youth to further their education in our Orthodox Faith from home.  This can be a coordinated effort or self-paced study.

Challenge – Coffee Hour

In the ENY, we hope to spend time with each other in worship at Liturgy and in fellowship as well.  The challenge here is resetting the church hall in a social distancing manner and also having appropriate items offered after Liturgy.

Solution

We should reset the tables in pairs to keep social distance, wear masks when not drinking coffee or consuming food.  Our Holy Trinity church should consider acquiring healthy food items (no donuts) that are individually wrapped so we do not pass on contagious viruses or germs to another person.  These can be donated by everyone.  Some examples would be granola bars, small packages of nuts and healthy snack foods, individual breakfast bars, etc.  We are seeking out a blessing from His Eminence to restart this.  For the moment, let us continue to worship together and social distance in the parking lot.  The weather is delightful this time of year.

Challenge – Spiritual Growth in the Ecclesiastical New Year

Each year we strive to grow in life, faith and spiritual understanding.  The ENY we should seek out a good and reasonable goal to grow in Christ.

Solution

We can set a daily goal or a weekly goal that is easily placed into our schedules.  Some examples include: reading the daily Bible readings in our church calendar, setting aside 10 minutes in the morning and/or evening to pray with your icons, reading a good Orthodox spiritual classic (I have suggestions!), participation in a Bible study from home (I am working on some ideas!), etc.  This will bring joy and grace into our lives.

Happy Ecclesiastical New Year!

Love, Fr. Jon

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Mode

Let us the faithful give praise and worship to the Logos, coeternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation; for of His own goodwill he consented to ascend the cross in the flesh and endured death and raised the dead by His glorious resurrection.

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Exaltation in the Second Mode

We offer Thee in mediation the life-giving Cross which, of Thy goodness, Thou hast given unto us, the unworthy, O Lord. Save Thy hierarchs and Thy flock, and grant Thou peace through the Theotokos, O only friend of man.

Apolytikion for Temple of the Resurrection in the Fourth Mode

Thou hast shown the earthly beauty of the holy tabernacle of Thy glory to be like unto the splendour of the heavenly firmament, O Lord. Strengthen it for ever and ever, and accept our prayers which we unceasingly offer therein unto Thee, through the Theotokos, O Thou Who art the Life and Resurrection of all.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

The Church is shown to be a many-lighted heaven that doth shine a guiding light upon all them that do believe; wherein while standing we cry aloud: Do Thou Thyself now establish this house, O Lord.

Third Orthros Gospel

Third Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

Epistle Reading

Plagal Second Mode.

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

Sunday before Holy Cross

Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from John 3:13-17

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

The Consecration of the Church of the Holy Resurrection (Holy Sepulchre)

The church that is honoured far above all others is that of the Holy Resurrection, which Saint Constantine the Great constructed at the place of Golgotha, where our Saviour was crucified and buried. For a long time this place had been purposely buried beneath the earth by the Jews and heathen; furthermore, during the reign of Hadrian (117-138), a temple dedicated to Aphrodite was built over the site so that this sacred place might be even further desecrated and fall into utter oblivion. It was here that the Cross was hidden. However, at the command of the pious Emperor Constantine, excavations were made and the tokens of the saving Passion were found. It was here, then, that the very great and magnificent temple named in honour of Christ God's Resurrection-the Anastasis-was built under the supervision of the blessed Helen, while Dracilian was Eparch of Palestine and Macarius was Archbishop of Jerusalem. It was the latter, also, who exalted the venerable Cross and performed the consecration of this temple in the year 336.
