Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 1st Tone

The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. You rose on the third day, O Lord and Savior, granting life unto the world. For this reason were the powers of heaven crying out to You, O Life-giver: Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; glory to Your kingdom; glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind.

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Transfiguration in the 4th Tone

O Faithful, prepare for the Transfiguration of Christ, and joyously celebrate as we observe on this day the Forefeast, and cry aloud: Coming is the day of the divine exultation. The Master is ascending the holy mountain of Tabor, in order to shine with the beauty of His divinity.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 4th Tone

On this day of Christ's divine Transfiguration human nature in advance splendidly shines with light divine, and with great joy we all cry aloud, "Christ is transfigured in glory and saves us all".

Eusignius the Martyr of Antioch

This Martyr was from Antioch, and had been a soldier from the time of the reign of Constantius Chlorus (the father of Saint Constantine the Great) to that of Julian the Apostate. He censured Julian's ungodliness and reminded him that he was the nephew of Saint Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor. He reminded him further, that from his tender youth he had been nourished on the milk of piety and instructed in the Faith of Christ, had been a fellow student of Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian, had been a reader of the Church of Nicomedia, and that he had set all these things at nought and become a transgressor of the promises made in his divine Baptism, and had offered to the idols the adoration that is due to God alone. Reminding the Apostate of all these things and reproving him, he was beheaded in the year 361, having lived altogether 110 years, and been a soldier for more than sixty.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 1st Tone. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16.

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

Gospel Reading

10th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 17:14-23

At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day."

Parish News

A Word from Fr. John:

In connection with the blessing of fruits at the Feast of the Transfiguration – from the Church’s service books:

“Bless, O Lord, this new fruit of the vine, which, through the wholesomeness of the air and through showers of rain and temperate weather, You are well-pleased should attain to ripeness at this time. May our partaking of this birth of the vine be for gladness, and for the offering of a gift unto You, for the cleansing of sins, through the sacred and holy Body of your Christ, with whom You are blessed, together with your most holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.”

                                    – Prayer at the Partaking of Grapes on the 6th of August

Some further notes after this prayer: “And let it be known that this prayer is said over grapes where there are vineyards, and these are brought into the church for a blessing on this 6th day of August. But… where vineyards are not found, apples are brought this day into the church [or, presumably, if apples are not readily available, whatever fruit is ripe and available at that season and particular locality – Fr. John]…. In modern times, when fresh fruits may be obtained at any season, a sampling of fruits should still be brought for a blessing on August 6. Likewise, for those who grow their own fruits, some should be brought to the church for a blessing when they are ripe for harvest.”

Not surprisingly, there follows after these directives a second prayer, covering fruits beyond, or in place of, the offering of grapes:

“O Master, Lord our God, who commands everyone to bring as an offering your own of your own, and grants to them in return your eternal good things; who favourably accepted the offering of the widow which was according to her ability: Do You now also accept the things offered by your servant(s) _______, and count them worthy to lay up the same in your eternal treasury….”
