Holy Martyr Vincent

Saint Vincent is the most illustrious of the Martyrs of Spain. Because of his virtue, he was ordained deacon by Valerius, Bishop of Saragossa, who, because of his advanced age and an impediment in his speech, commissioned Vincent to be preacher of the Gospel. In 303, the impious Emperors Diocletian and Maximian sent Dacian to Spain as governor, with an edict to persecute the clergy. Saint Vincent was brought with Bishop Valerius to Valencia; the bishop was sent into exile, but the holy deacon was tortured on a rack, and after suffering other cruel torments, gave up his soul into the hands of God on January 22 in the year 304.

Menas of Egypt

Saint Menas, who had Egypt as his fatherland, contested in Cotyaeion of Phrygia in 296 during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian. A soldier distinguished for his valour in war, he renounced his rank and withdrew to devote himself to ascetical struggles and prayer in the mountains. Filled with zeal and more than human courage, he presented himself in the midst of a pagan festival in Cotyaeion and declared himself to be a Christian. After terrible torments which he endured with astonishing courage, he was beheaded. His martyrium in Egypt became a place of universal pilgrimage; evidence of ancient journeys to his shrine have been found as far away as Ireland. The glory and refuge of the Christians of Egypt, he has been revealed to be a worker of great miracles and a swift defender for all who call on him with faith; besides all else, he is also invoked for help in finding lost objects.

Victor and Stephanie

Saints Victor and Stephanie contested in Damascus in 160, during the reign of Antoninus Pius. The pagans arrested Saint Victor as a Christian and cut off his fingers, put out his eyes, and beheaded him. As Saint Stephanie, the wife of a certain soldier, and a Christian, saw Victor's nobility in his sufferings, she loudly cried out to call him blessed and to say that she saw two crowns prepared, one for him, and one for herself. She also was taken, and was tied to two palm trees which had been bowed down; when they were released, she was torn asunder.

Theodore the Studite

Saint Theodore the Studite was born in Constantinople in 759; his pious parents were named Photinus and Theoctiste. He assumed the monastic habit in his youth, at the monastery called Sakkoudion, and became abbot there in 794. About the year 784 he was ordained deacon, and later presbyter by the most holy Patriarch Tarasius. On joining the brotherhood of the Monastery of Studium (which was named after its founder Studius, a Roman consul), the Saint received the surname "Studite." He proved to be a fervent zealot for the traditions of the Fathers and contested even unto death for the sake of his reverence for the holy icons. He endured three exiles because of his pious zeal. During the third one, to which he was condemned by the Iconoclast autocrat, Leo the Armenian, he endured courageously - being beaten and bound and led from one dark dungeon to another - for seven whole years. Finally he was recalled from exile by Michael the Stutterer. Receiving thus a small respite from his labours of long endurance, he reposed in the Lord on November 11, 826, a Sunday, while his disciples, who stood round about him, chanted the 118th Psalm. Some say that after receiving the immaculate Mysteries, he himself began chanting this psalm. And on reaching the verse, ' I will never forget Thy statutes, for in them hast Thou quickened me" (Ps. 118:93), he gave up his spirit, having lived for sixty-seven years. In addition to his other sacred writings, he composed, with the collaboration of his brother Joseph, almost the whole of the compunctionate book of the Triodion (see also July 14).

God is wonderful among his saints.
Verse: Bless God in the congregations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15.

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

On the Eucharist…

“After the Chrismation we go to the table [that is, the Eucharist – Holy Communion]. This is the perfection of the life in Christ; for those who attain it there is nothing lacking for the blessedness which they seek. It is no longer death and the tomb and a participation in the better life which we receive, but the Risen One himself. Nor do we receive such gifts of the Spirit as we may, but the very Benefactor himself, the very Temple whereon is founded the whole compass of graces.

 

Now, indeed, Christ is present in each of the Mysteries [the traditional Orthodox word for the sacraments]…. The mode, however, is not entirely the same…. When He has led the initiate to the table and has given him his Body to eat, He entirely changes him, and transforms him into his own state.

 

[The Eucharist] is therefore the final Mystery as well, since it is not possible to go beyond it or to add anything to it. The first Mystery, Baptism, clearly needs the middle one, Chrismation, and that in turn stands in need of the final Mystery. After the Eucharist, then, there is nowhere further to go. There we must stand, and try to examine the means by which we may preserve the treasure to the end.”

64th Annual St. Augustine Christmas Parade – December 1st:  Thanks to faithful families of Holy Trinity, The Nativity float will remain a beautiful witness in the Annual Christmas Parade again this year!  The float carries adults and children seated & staged as Joseph, Mary, angels, 3 wise men, shepherds, sheep & animals of all kinds, a star, and carolers of ALL AGES!  Banner-bearing, Greek-dancing, culturally costumed, hearkening carolers on foot & float have been refreshingly welcomed throughout the downtown parade route.  

All participant families are invited to plan and decorate the float and meet the on the day of the parade by 8:30 AM on San Marco Ave between Ballard & Ocean (near/across from the Ace Hardware), for the 9:00 AM parade start.   Costumes for the Nativity are available but we gladly welcome families to create their own.  Donations of Christmas decorations and candy canes are requested from the entire parish.  Float construction/work days will take be announced to the community via e-mail.  Call or e-mail the Church Office to be on this year’s committee!

 

Stewardship:

  • "As Orthodox Christians, we see the world as God's gift, as a sacrament of God's presence and a means of communion with Him.  Thus we are able to offer the world back to God in thanksgiving, as we say in every Divine Liturgy "Thine own of Thine own we offer to thee. . ."
  • Please review your stewardship contributions to date and contact the church office if you need a current statement.  If you have not already done so, consider automatic payments to be sent from your bank.
  • The 2019 Stewardship drive begins soon, with a theme that reflects our belief that being "a responsible and concerned caretaker of Christ's Church is learning how to enjoy church life and be happy in church work, for in Her dwells the fullness of the Spirit of God."

  • Help Wanted
    • Each year, the stewardship commitment card lists possible areas of interest in which members might engage:  youth, building and grounds, liturgical, ministries, fellowship, and more.  Each person’s gift is unique and important, and the combination of everyone’s talents helps us reach our full potential.
    • As we focus on our future goals, ensuring that communities in our area know about our welcoming parish requires publicity.  The first step was creating brochures for festival attendees and parish guests.  We are now focusing on both print ads and expanded social media.
    • We are currently looking for someone to manually enhance a black and white vector image of our church for publicity use.  If you are able to assist, or know someone who can, please contact Toula Zotos at zotost@gmail.com.
    • We do have a Facebook and Google presence, but no one assigned to enhance its impact and provide data on its effectiveness.  If you are talented in the area of social media management or know of someone who is, please contact Toula.
    • You will soon be receiving a 2019 Stewardship brochure and a Holy Trinity 2019 commitment card in the mail.  If you have moved and not yet notified the church office, please do so as soon as possible (holy3goc@gmail.com)

Christmas Card:

Beginning today and until December 9th, the Philoptochos is taking orders for the 2018 parish Christmas card.  The cost is still $15.  A sample of the card is available at the order table. Please print your name and address on the order form, and make out checks to Holy Trinity (memo Christmas card).  You may also pick up an order form and return it by mail, but your order must be received by December 6th.

 

Philoptochos Christmas Brunch:

Following the Nativity Pageant on December 16th, the Philoptochos will host a special Christmas brunch (Lenten) and present gifts to the children. New this year will be a Christmas cookie table (recipes are promised), and a silent auction of Christmas gift baskets. A donation of $5 is suggested, free for children under 5 years of age.  Proceeds will go to Outreach for support of its Christmas ministry.

 

Sunday School News:

  • Miss Lisa Colburn and our new teacher, Miss Evangelia Brati (Hallo), teach our children ages preschool to second grade. The class uses Together With God which introduces the child to the Divine Liturgy and some of the major Church feasts. It includes 4-page lesson folders and fun activities.In class we have studied about prayer and made a child’s first prayer book. This Sunday we start learning about the Divine Liturgy. 

 

  • The Sunday School’s Christmas pageant will be Sunday Dec. 16th. We ask that all Sunday School students please plan on attending Sunday School from Nov. 11th until the pageant so we can practice for a few (10 -15 minutes) minutes at the end of our abbreviated lessons. The teachers are graciously giving up a little class time so that the families will have minimal inconvenience. No classes or rehearsal Thanksgiving weekend. This pageant uses narration with the children acting out the parts. We will need some volunteers to read for the various sections of the story (Innkeeper, shepherd, etc.). Teens and adults of any age are welcome to participate.
