Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 1st Tone

Let us worship the Word who is unoriginate with the Father and the Spirit, and from a Virgin was born for our salvation, O believers, and let us sing His praise. For in His goodness He was pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, and to undergo death, and to raise up those who had died, by His glorious Resurrection.

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Exaltation in the 2nd Tone

The life-giving Cross of Your goodness, which we the unworthy have from You as a gift, we present to You, O Lord, as an intercessor. Save our leaders and our nation and keep them in peace, through the Theotokos, O only One who loves humanity.

Apolytikion for Temple of the Resurrection in the 4th Tone

You have made the earthly beauty of the holy tabernacle of Your glory to be like the majesty of the firmament on high, O Lord. Make it strong forever and ever, and accept our supplications that we unceasingly bring to You there, at the intercession of the Theotokos. For You are the life and resurrection of all.

Apolytikion for the Church in the 1st Tone

8th Tone

Blessed are You, O Christ our God; You made wise men of poor fishermen by sending down upon them Your Holy Spirit, and through them You caught the whole world, O Lover of mankind, glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 4th Tone

Lord, Your Church appears to us to be like heaven full of light, and guides with light all who believe in You, O Christ. And we who stand in it cry to You: Savior, establish forever this holy house.

Cornelius the Centurion & Martyr

Saint Cornelius was a Roman by race, a pagan by religion, a centurion in rank, an inhabitant of Caesarea of Palestine, a man pious and God-fearing who gave many alms to the people and prayed continually unto God. In accordance with an angelic vision granted to him, he sent to Joppa that they might bring the Apostle Peter. Saint Peter catechized him in the Faith of Christ and baptized all his household (Acts, ch.10). This became the beginning and the first fruits of the calling of the nations. It is said that, after this, he became a bishop, as some say, of Caesarea; but others say of Scepsis, which is not far from Troas; and that he died as a martyr.

The Consecration of the Church of the Holy Resurrection (Holy Sepulchre)

The church that is honoured far above all others is that of the Holy Resurrection, which Saint Constantine the Great constructed at the place of Golgotha, where our Saviour was crucified and buried. For a long time this place had been purposely buried beneath the earth by the Jews and heathen; furthermore, during the reign of Hadrian (117-138), a temple dedicated to Aphrodite was built over the site so that this sacred place might be even further desecrated and fall into utter oblivion. It was here that the Cross was hidden. However, at the command of the pious Emperor Constantine, excavations were made and the tokens of the saving Passion were found. It was here, then, that the very great and magnificent temple named in honour of Christ God's Resurrection-the Anastasis-was built under the supervision of the blessed Helen, while Dracilian was Eparch of Palestine and Macarius was Archbishop of Jerusalem. It was the latter, also, who exalted the venerable Cross and performed the consecration of this temple in the year 336.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

Gospel Reading

Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from John 3:13-17

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

Parish News

A Word from Fr. John:

Very little from me this week. Indeed, in these troubled times, I am almost “afraid” even to preach – it requires, I fear, more wisdom and inspiration than I bring to the table. (This is always true, but now I feel it most strongly!) I am reminded of Job’s words towards the end of the book that bears his name:

“But what answer will I give to these things?

I will put my hand over my mouth.

I have spoken once – I will not do so a second time.”

Special Prayer Requests:

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  (Phil. 4:6-7)

We pray for mercy, life, peace, and healing of all parishioners, especially: Gail Jones, Chresanthe Lemieux, Zoe Kauttu, Maryann Bolt, James Day, Kostas Lantzounis, Fr. Nikitas and Pres. Mary Theodosion, His Grace Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos, Margaret, James, Kyriake, Joseph, Irene Hastalis, Jane Anderson. Remember also our missionary families: Fr. Stephanos, Pr. Alexandria, Moses & Athan Ritsi serving in Albania; and Michael, Lisa & Liam Colburn.  We pray for Mary G. Spanos who passed on Sept. 5th. May her memory be eternal.

Memorials:

  • September 20th Cleopatra (Cleo) Birbilis (1 year)
  • September 27th Ivel (3 year) and Minas Sarris (7 year)

Liturgical Services:

Join us for services at HTGOC:  https://www.facebook.com/HolyTrinityGOC/

  • Upcoming service for tomorrow CANCELLED:

Unfortunately, we will not offer the Divine Liturgy for the Elevation of the Cross tomorrow – Monday, Sept. 14. This is a change from previous announcements. I apologize, and I encourage you to keep the Feast as best you are able from home – including your rule of prayer and by praying the Typika service if you know how to do so. If feasible, we will perhaps offer the procession with the Life-Giving Cross, along with the petitions, at the end of the Liturgy today.

Regarding Sunday, please let us know if you plan to attend the Divine Liturgy, so that we can keep things running smoothly at the church while signing folks in and taking temperatures. This will help us keep the focus on worshipping God as much as possible.

Therefore, please contact the church office via email - holy3goc@gmail.com - preferably with the subject line "I want to attend" - or by phone at 904 829-0504, and let Nelda know your name, the names of those you plan to attend with, and your phone number. Please let her know by Thursday before 1 p.m. Again, this will help us prepare well and know what to expect, as well as avoid bottlenecks and other kinds of confusion.

In line with our bishop’s directives, we are still monitoring the temperature of each person entering the church, and we are still required to wear face coverings while we are in the church.

Parish Council Report:

We understand the void in our parish fellowship, and we are looking forward to being together again.  A lot has been accomplished, including managing Covid-19 response at HTGOC, live-streaming services (https://www.facebook.com/HolyTrinityGOC/), receiving on-line donations, and we have re-opened our Church for Divine Services.  We continue to follow the We continue to follow the prescribed guidelines.

  • Stewardship Report

Although we are still in a period of uncertainty, it is vital for us to keep a positive, Christ-centered approach to our efforts.  We ask you to partner and grow in Faith with us.  Your stewardship commitment is vital to our efforts.  We currently have 66 active Holy Trinity Steward families, with over $99,454 pledged.  If you have not done so, please submit your stewardship commitment card.  Stewardship payments can be made on-line (http://www.holytrinitygoc.com).

On-Line Giving:

  • The Parish Council has added a link “Make a Donation” on our Church’s web page www.HolyTrinityGOC.com for on-line giving. This is a secure way to give to your Church.  Giving categories have been set up to allow giving to specific funds within the Church – for instance, Stewardship, Easter, Memorials, etc.  You can give via credit card, Paypal and you also have the ability to set up recurrent giving.  Of course, you can also set up recurrent giving through your bank if you wish.  Please be sure that a specific notation (ex: stewardship) is included for each transaction.
  • We have also added a link for our new “Light a Candle & Say a Prayer” ministry. This new service allows us to light a candle during our divine services on-line.  Your request will be forwarded to the Parish Council in the narthex during the service and they will pray for you and light your candle.  Also, if you wish to provide names of loved ones to be prayed for, those will be provided to Fr. John as well.

Giving by Check:

Each time you contribute funds to the parish by check, the notation on the memo line of your check allows us to identify your intentions:  Stewardship, Candles, Trays, Memorials, etc.

Weekly Offering:

Sacrificial Offerings - Sept 6th – Candles $141; Tray $62; Stewardship $1335

2020 Stewardship – “Partner and Grow in Faith with Us”:

There is strength in numbers.  Whether we are physically together or simply connected in our hearts and minds, we are one church family.  We continue to celebrate the Liturgy, Sunday School and Bible Study classes are available online, community outreach continues with donated supplies, and we will offer a church based Greek food pickup event in October.  When you make your Stewardship commitments and contributions, you join others in making us stronger and better able to meet the needs of our parish as partners in faith.

Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study:

The adult Bible Study of the Gospel of John occurs each Wednesday from 8 to 9 PM online through Zoom.  The meeting can be accessed by going to https://theColburns.us and clicking on the menu item that says “Online”. The passcode is 411363.  You can also see what verses will be studied each Sunday so you can read them ahead of time.

Sunday School News:

Holy Trinity Sunday School had its first VIRTUAL meeting on August 12th.  For now, classes will be done on a weekly basis using Zoom.  There are a lot of amazing online materials that the teachers will use, as well as standard textbooks.  We ask that all parents make this a priority for their children as the success of this ministry relies on parents.

  • PreK- K class (Lisa Colburn and Evangelia Brati) will meet via Zoom at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
  • 1st – 8th grade class (Carman Gaetanos and Pres Renee Ritsi) will meet via Zoom on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
  • High School class (Mary Righos and Kurt Mitman) will meet via Zoom according to availability.

Each group of teachers will be coordinating individually with their classes and setting times and sending Zoom links.  If you have questions, please contact Pres Renee (904.377.2591) or Carman (904.540.0367 or carmgaet@gmail.com).

Trek 4 Missions 2020 ends tomorrow at the Exultation of the Cross:

Mission supporters nation-wide have collectively trekked 11,012.6 miles and raised $78,462.00 for OCMC's Trek4Missions. Our team has completed, 150 miles as of 9/5 and raised $650. We are keeping the tradition of covering a lot of ground to share the Good News of Christ.

  • Did you know in 2015, OCMC sent it's first short-term mission team to Indonesia? They traveled 10,588 miles from St. Augustine, FL to a country that's only 10% Christian. OCMC supports the efforts of local communities and clergy through the Support A Missionary Priest (SAMP) Program and sending teams.

To support our team, please visit
