A Word from Fr. Maximos

Divine Providence and repentance.

When God placed the first created man in Paradise, He gave them a command. Along with it He warned them. «In the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.». Let us note here that God did not say "I will kill you". He spoke to them about the consequences of disobedience. Separation from God brings decay and decay brings death. God is not a cruel legislator. He is a God of love. The expulsion from Paradise began with the temptation they received in their soul. They began to doubt what God had told them. Thought brought action and action brought fall and expulsion.

Far from God man lost immortality and along with it the possibility of living close to God. But God is a loving one and His justice is always accompanied by love for His creature. So, He implements the plan of the Divine Economy. He becomes the second Adam and with His Sacrifice on the Cross opens the gates of salvation. What remains in man is to do what the first Adam did not do. Just as the departure began with the questioning of God and disobedience, so the return is done with obedience to God. Obedience to God is manifested through repentance. Let us listen to the Lord who begins His teaching with the: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand", which means, it is near. That is what he preached then. But, I think, he would say the same today: "Repent, for in this way you will come closer to the Kingdom of Heaven."

On August 19, 2021, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta wrote: "it is important to consider that late last week, the CDC published its latest guidelines which reads: “Use masks to slow the spread of COVID-19 in which they state that masks should be worn by those, “including children older than 2, who are not fully vaccinated [and] fully vaccinated people with weakened immune systems.”  Finally, the CDC writes “To maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, fully vaccinated people should wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission."

By the direction of our Metropolitan, we strongly encourage all parishioners to resume wearing masks to slow the spread of the Delta variant.

Please see complete letter in ANNOUNCEMENTS section.

Special Prayer Requests: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  (Phil. 4:6-7)

September 5th Memorial:  September 5th – One Year Memorial for Mary Spanos, mother of Gail Jones.

May We Never Forget:  Twenty years ago, 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights; 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning; 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift; 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol; 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives.  None of them saw past 10:00am on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.  In one single moment, life would never be the same.  As we remember our own Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church destroyed on that horrific morning, we beseech our Lord to grant eternal rest to both those who perished on that day and to the many rescue workers who have died since trying to help others.  Memory Eternal and...may we never forget.

Vasiliko Donations Needed for the Feast of the Holy Cross:  We need Vasiliko (sweet basil) for the services of the Holy Cross.  Please bring your donation on Sunday, September 12 so that the tray can be prepared for services on September 14.  There will be vases it in the Narthex for your Vasiliko donation.  Ecclesiastical Services will be held on Tuesday, September 14 (Orthros 9am, Divine Liturgy 10am)

Fires in Greece Collection:  On August 15, 2021, parishioners generously donated $489 for relief of the catastrophic fires in Greece. The parish council voted to match that amount from our Outreach Reserve funds. The total contribution from our parish sent to the Archdiocese-IOCC combined relief fund was $978.

Thank you to all who have continued to be active stewards in 2021.  For those that have not already done so, please go to our website (http://holytrinitygoc.com) and make a Stewardship contribution (under 'Make a Donation") to ensure that this place of faith, its priest and its ministries will be adequately supported.  Thank you!

Sunday School News:  Classes are in session.  Join us this week.  St. Paul writes: "Fathers [parents], bring them [your children] up with the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4) Our goal is that Holy Trinity Sunday School be an encouragement to your child's spiritual life and growth and a supplement to what you as a parent are trying to accomplish at home as you educate your child in the Faith, "bringing them up with the training and instruction of the Lord.”

For parents and students that may prefer a zoom alternative, please contact Presbytera Renee Ritsi at 904 377-2591.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 2nd Tone

When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You.

Apolytikion for Zacharias the Prophet in the 4th Tone

As a priest according to the Law of God you offered up * whole-burnt offerings, and they were most acceptable to Him, * dressed in the vestments of the priesthood, O Zacharias. * And you became a light, and you beheld mysteries; * and clearly you displayed the signs and symbols of grace * within yourself. And you, were assassinated * by the sword in the Temple of God. * O all-wise Prophet of Christ the Savior,* join the Forerunner in praying that our souls be saved.

Apolytikion for the Church in the 1st Tone

8th Tone

Blessed are You, O Christ our God; You made wise men of poor fishermen by sending down upon them Your Holy Spirit, and through them You caught the whole world, O Lover of mankind, glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 4th Tone

Both Joachim and Anna from their sterility's stigma, and Adam and Eve from their mortality's ruin have been set free, O immaculate Maid, by your holy nativity. For this do your people hold celebration, redeemed from the guilt of transgression as they cry to you, "The barren one bears the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life."

Holy Prophet Zacharias, Father of the Venerable Forerunner

According to the opinion of many Fathers of the Church, based on an ancient tradition, this is the Zacharias whom, as our Lord said, the Jews slew between the temple and the altar (Matt. 23:35), first, because even after the Virgin Mary gave birth, he continued to refer to her as virgin and number her among the virgins; second, because Zacharias' son John was not found during the slaughter of the Innocents, since the elderly Elizabeth had taken him and carefully hid him while he was yet an infant, in an unnamed place somewhere in the desert, where, according to the Evangelist, "the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel" (Luke 1:80). When the child was not found, his father was slain by Herod's command.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 2nd Tone. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 9:2-12.

Brethren, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

Gospel Reading

11th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 18:23-35

The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the torturers, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."
