A Word from Fr. Maximos

DISCIPLESHIP

Discipleship in Christ

In the Gospel according to St. Matthew we read that the Lord bids farewell to the Apostles while giving the command to make all the nations their disciples. "Go then and make disciples of all the nations."

He does not simply ask them to go to all the nations and preach. The Lord expects from man the spirit of Discipleship. Life in Christ is the adoption of the teaching of Christ in every aspect of our lives and not just the reading and assimilation of a teaching. It is the life that was lived and still is lived by the Saints, who are the foremost Disciples of Christ.

"But be you doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves", Apostle James urges us in his Catholic letter. The great mistake of man, not only today but in every age, is that he thinks he knows, interprets, or understands everything that concerns his relationship with God and the salvation of the soul. Even when he realizes that his spiritual endeavor is failing, flaws and passions remain, he is not humbled. He thinks he just made mistakes in handling some situations and says: "I was wrong, but now I know what I have to do." Christ rebukes this attitude and says, "Because you say that you see, therefore your sin remains." In other words, you cannot get rid of sin.

Discipleship is the spiritual rebirth of man. Take the example of recycled materials. Without being destroyed what is good in the material, what will emerge in the end is new. The change is not limited to the surface of the material, the shape, or the color. There will be nothing left reminiscent of the old material. By analogy we would say that in the spirit of Discipleship man becomes new. As the hymns of the feast of the Epiphany say, “Without fire He casts anew? and without shattering He refashions.” God regenerates man without burning or crushing him.

What is the spirit of Discipleship? It is what one of the greatest sages of all time, Socrates, teaches: "One I know, that I know nothing." We all have the image of parents going to school with their children for the first time. The parents encourage them to listen to the teacher and to do with confidence what he will teach them. God knows what we need, He knows the lessons we need to learn. So let us learn to leave our souls in the hands of God according to what we hear again and again in the church. "Let us commit ourselves and our whole life to Christ of God."

On August 19, 2021, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta wrote: "it is important to consider that late last week, the CDC published its latest guidelines which reads: “Use masks to slow the spread of COVID-19 in which they state that masks should be worn by those, “including children older than 2, who are not fully vaccinated [and] fully vaccinated people with weakened immune systems.”  Finally, the CDC writes “To maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, fully vaccinated people should wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission."

In accordance with the wishes of our Metropolitan, we encourage all parishioners to resume wearing masks to slow the spread of the Delta variant.  Whether one chooses to wear a mask or not, all are welcome!

"...the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:14

November Fall General Assembly Zoom Meeting:  Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church will hold a scheduled Fall General Assembly Zoom meeting on November 7, 2021 11:30 AM Eastern Time (US and Canada).

Collection for St. Demiana Coptic Orthodox Church:  It is with great sadness that we learned that St. Demiana Coptic Orthodox Church in Jacksonville was involved in a fire on Monday morning and is a complete loss.  We ask that we all offer prayers that God gives the Clergy and parishioners strength, hope and peace during this difficult time.

To show our support to their community, we took up a collection for them last coming Sunday, and also through our on-line donation portal. The collection will be matched from our outreach funds as well.

Special Prayer Requests: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  (Phil. 4:6-7)

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 2nd Tone

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Apolytikion for Dionysios the Areopagite in the 4th Tone

Having learnt kindness, and being always steady and sober, vested with a good conscience as befits a priest, you drew out from the Chosen Vessel the secrets of God. And having kept the faith, you have finished the fair race, O Hieromartyr Dionysius. Intercede with Christ our God, entreating Him to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 2nd Tone

O Protection of Christians that never falls, intercession with the Creator that never fails, we sinners beg you, do not ignore the voices of our prayers. O good Lady, we implore you, quickly come unto our aid, when we cry out to you with faith. Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who protect now and ever those who honor you.

Dionysios the Areopagite

This Saint was from Athens, a learned man, and a member of the famous judicial court of Mars Hill (in Greek Aeros Pagos, hence the name Areopagite (see Acts 17:19-34). When Saint Paul preached in Athens, he was one of the first there to believe in Christ, and, according to some, became the first bishop of that city. Others say -- and this may be more probable--that he was the second Bishop of Athens, after Saint Hierotheus, whom Dionysios calls his friend and teacher "after Paul" (On the Divine Names, 3:2). With Saint Hierotheus he was also present at the Dormition of the most holy Theotokos; the Doxasticon of the Aposticha for the service of the Dormition is partly taken from a passage in Chapter III of On the Divine Names. According to ancient tradition, he received a martyr's end (according to some, in Athens itself) about the year 96.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15.

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Gospel Reading

2nd Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 6:31-36

The Lord said, "As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."
