 A Word from Fr. Maximos

Obedience and Holiness

The Church on January 21 celebrates the memory of St. Maximos the confessor. The Saint was not a common man. He was a brilliant mind with outstanding performances in Theology and Philosophy. These gifts made him a consultant to the kings during the period of the Byzantine emperors. But the Church did not honor him for these pure human gifts. The sanctity of life was what placed him in the celebration book of the Church. It was this holiness that pushed him when things showed that this was how it should be done, to leave the high offices, the palaces and the glorious environment in which he lived until then.

The saint is ready to deny his position, the gifts that make him stand out, his physical security and safety, his own life. It is enough for him to believe and act according to the faith and teaching of the Church. In our day there are many who want to feel like soldiers, fighters, confessors, but in a special way and separated from the order and teaching of the Church. But this choice creates divisions and disorients faithful from the path to salvation. The Church, as we hear during the Divine Liturgy, is a unity of faith, action and obedience. The Church is "one, holy, Catholic and Apostolic". Where any of these characteristics are distorted, the concept of the Church is abolished. No matter how much one believes that he thinks wisely, charismatically or with Divine inspiration, if he is not in the obedience of the Church he is deceived. Christ teaches that He did not come to do His own sinless, holy will but the will of the one who sent him.

Stewardship 2022 - "Our Church, Our Spiritual Home"

Many thanks to all who have been active stewards of our parish in 2021. The gifts of your time, talent and resources have truly enriched our parish life.  We look forward to continuing to be a community of faith and mutual support in 2022.

Our Orthodox Christian Church is our spiritual home -- a place of comfort, spiritual healing and celebration.  We enter our spiritual home to be part of a community of believers. To be truly a member of the Church as a Body of Christ requires our presence and our engagement with one another in worship, study and service to others.

Be a caretaker of our parish by making a pledge to become an active Steward of Holy Trinity Church, St Augustine.  In addition to joining one another as worshippers, Sunday School parents, Philoptochos and Outreach ministry members, you can contribute to the financial goals of this parish by submitting a Stewardship Commitment form with your goals for 2022.

ICONOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AT HTGOC

Aristidis Kovaci, who painted our Pantocrator and Platytera, will offer a workshop at our church for persons interested in learning to paint an icon. Over the course of 5 days, participants will complete a full-sized icon on a wood panel, as they learn about the artistic aspects and visual language of iconography. For more about Aristidis, visit his website www.kovaciart.com, and “like” him on Facebook to see more of his work.  For more information about the workshop, please email Carmela at ctardo@gmail.com and leave your phone number and the best time to call you.

Sunday School News:

St. Paul writes: "Fathers [parents], bring them [your children] up with the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4) Our goal is that Holy Trinity Sunday School be an encouragement to your child's spiritual life and growth and a supplement to what you as a parent are trying to accomplish at home as you educate your child in the Faith, "bringing them up with the training and instruction of the Lord.” For parents and students that may prefer a zoom alternative, please contact Presbytera Renee Ritsi at 904 377-2591.

Monday Night Bible Study:

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 2nd Tone

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Apolytikion for Hieromartyr Clement in the 4th Tone

O Clement, according to your all-sacred name, you grew as a branch of holiness, a stem of martyrdom, a most sacred flower, and a luscious fruit given by God to the faithful. We pray you, who ran with Martyrs and shared the throne with hierarchs: intercede with Christ our God, entreating Him to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 1st Tone

You sanctified the virginal womb by Your birth, O Lord, and blessed the hands of Symeon fittingly, O Christ God; and even now You came and saved us. Now, give peace to our Nation in time of war, and empower our Leaders, so loved by You, the only one who loves humanity.

Hieromartyr Clement, Bishop of Ancyra

Saint Clement, who was from Ancyra in Galatia, was the son of an unbelieving father, but a believing mother whose name was Sophia. At first he lived as a monk, later he became the bishop of his city. He suffered so many things in confession of the Faith in Christ, that the time of his sufferings and struggles stretched out over a period of twenty-eight years. Finally he and Saint Agathangelus (who was from Rome) were beheaded together during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian, in the year 296.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to Timothy 1:15-17.

Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners; but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience for an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory to the ages of ages. Amen.

Gospel Reading

14th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 18:35-43

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
