Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second Mode

When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You.

Apolytikion for the Church in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Blessed are You, O Christ our God; you made the fishermen all-wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them you drew the world into your net. O Lover of mankind, glory to You.

Evloyitós i, Hristé o Theós imón; o pansófous tous aliís anadhíxas, katapémpsas aftís to pnévma to áyion, ke dhi aftón tin ikouménin sayinéfsas, Filánthrope, dhóxa si.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Mode

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Second Mode. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 6:10-17.

Brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Gospel Reading

14th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 18:35-43

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Announcements

Altar Team: Mark

Parish Council Members on Duty: Bill Phillips, Tim Weeks & Helen Rogers

We will be holding our 2019 Parish Council Elections next Sunday, December 9th.  There are five open seats on the Parish Council for the upcoming year and the following parishioners have been nominated to be on the Council: Mike Delvizis, Michael Brown, Helen Bellos, Jim Gaddis, John Miller, Elena Rollins, Ronnie Richard and Inge Preuss.  We hope that all parishioners in good standing will make plans to come and vote on the 9th.  Should anyone need an absentee ballot, please feel free to stop by the Church office during the week anytime from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Thank you.

The iconography committee has begun fundraising for the next phase of iconography which is set to begin in October of 2019.  Please visit the iconography table in the Hall after Liturgy on Sundays or see one of the iconography committee members (John Billo, David Taber and Anna Troussas) for more information.

2019 STEWARDSHIP- By this time everyone should have received their mailing from the Stewardship committee with a letter and a 2019 Stewardship card.  Please take the time to sit down and fill out the card and pray over what you feel you can give to help support and run Our Church.  On average it takes $1500.00 a day to keep Holy Trinity up and running.  Your gracious Stewardship is a reflection on the love and community that we have here at Holy Trinity.  We are truly Blessed.  If you have any questions and/or would like more information regarding Stewardship, please see Georgette or Peter Kennedy or any Parish Council member.  Blank 2019 Stewardship pledge cards will also be available for pickup in the Narthex.  THANK YOU for your support.

THANK YOU to EVERYONE who selected an Angel Tree ornament for children who attend Glengarry Elementary. As a reminder, please bring the gifts wrapped with a gift tag showing the child's first name and the number listed on the top of the ornament, to the church by Sunday, December 16. Also, please bag the gifts with name and number label on the bag. Deposit them on the stage with the Christmas tree. Someone from AHEPA (contact Tim Weeks) and Philoptochos (contact Sandra Pappas) will be there to receive your gifts each Sunday through December 16. We have one ornament unaccounted for, however - #1, Ray. If you have this ornament, please contact Tim Weeks, timgweeks@gmail.com or 615-293-8178.

This year's Sunday School Christmas Pageant will take place on Sunday December 16th.  If you would like your children to participate, please contact Jonathan McClish via email at mcclish.jonathan@gmail.com or let him know in person.  Rehearsals for the pageant will be after Church on Sunday, December 2nd and Sunday, December 9th as well as a final dress rehearsal on Saturday, December 15th at 11:00 am.  If your child will be involved, it is important to have them present at as many of the rehearsals as possible. Please let Jonathan know which, if any, of the rehearsals your child will miss upon signing them up.  Thank you.

The Book Group is now reading On Fasting and Feasts by St. Basil the Great.  It is available in the bookstore for $17.  Stop by and pick up your copy today!  We will be meeting Sunday, December 16th at 7:00 pm at the home of Helen Rogers and Larry Kamm to discuss.

Habbakuk
December 02

Habakkuk the Prophet

This Prophet, whose name means "loving embrace," is eighth in order of the minor Prophets. His homeland and tribe are not recorded in the Divine Scriptures; according to some, he was of the tribe of Symeon. He prophesied in the years of Joachim, who is also called Jechonias, before the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish People, which took place 599 years before Christ. When Nabuchodonosor came to take the Israelites captive, Habakkuk fled to Ostrakine, and after Jerusalem was destroyed and the Chaldeans departed, Habakkuk returned and cultivated his field. Once he made some pottage and was about to take it to the reapers in the field. An Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and carried him with the pottage to Babylon to feed Daniel in the lions' den, then brought him back to Judea (Bel and the Dragon, 33-39): His book of prophecy is divided into three chapters; the third chapter is also used as the Fourth Ode of the Psalter. His holy relics were found in Palestine during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Great, through a revelation to Zebennus, Bishop of Eleutheropolis (Sozomen, Eccl. Hist., Book VII, 29).
