Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. * For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. * He trampled death under foot by means of death; * and He became the firstborn from the dead. * From the maw of Hades He delivered us; * and He granted the world His great mercy.

Apolytikion for Conception of the Theotokos in the Fourth Mode

Against all hope, the bonds of barrenness are loosed today. For, God has hearkened unto Joachim and Anna clearly promising that they would bear a godly maiden. He who commanded the angel to cry out to her, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you," will be born of her, the infinite One Himself, becoming man.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

Today the world rejoices in the conception of Anna, wrought by God. For she bore the One who beyond comprehension conceived the Logos.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 63.11,1.
The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord.
Verse: Oh God, hear my cry.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 4:22-27.

Brethren, Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married."

Gospel Reading

10th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 13:10-17

At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

Announcements

Altar Team: Luke

Parish Council Members on Duty: George Plaster, Helen Rogers & James Embrey

Coffee Hour today is being hosted by Mr. Botsaris.  Thank you!

We will be holding our 2019 Parish Council Elections today, December 9th.  There are five open seats on the Parish Council for the upcoming year and the following parishioners have been nominated to be on the Council: Helen Bellos, Michael Brown, Mike Delvizis, Jim Gaddis, John Miller, Inge Preuss, Ronnie Richard and Elena Rollins.  We hope that all parishioners in good standing will make plans to stay and vote today.  Thank you.

GOYA will continue taking donations for the Parish Christmas card until next Sunday, December 16th.  The cost to be included in the card is $20 per family.  Please visit the GOYA table after Liturgy on Sunday to sign up or see Jonathan McClish for more information.

An Opportunity to Bring Some Christmas Joy!!!  Mary Pasayan is a longtime member of Holy Trinity who now resides in an assisted living here in Nashville.  She is 96 years old and her daughters, Leslie Richard and Jackie Phillips, have said how much she loves getting mail.  She is in a wheelchair and wheels herself to the mailbox each day, in hopes that she will get some mail.  If any of you would like to send Mary a Christmas card and bring one of the oldest members of our Church family some Christmas joy, her information is as follows: Morningside of Belmont, 1710 Magnolia Blvd., Nashville, TN, 37212, ATTN: Mary Pasayan #212.

The iconography committee is continuing with fundraising for the second phase of iconography which is set to begin in October of 2019.  We are thankful that in recent weeks, numerous parishioners have signed up to purchase medallions of Saints.  We are, however, still in need of additional funding to cover the expenses associated with the project.  We are so blessed to have been able to complete the first phase of iconography and are looking forward to the completion of the next phase in 2019, which can only be done with the help and support of our Parish community.  We encourage all parishioners to consider making a donation to our iconography fund.  Please visit the iconography table in the Hall after Liturgy on Sundays or see one of the iconography committee members (John Billo, David Taber and Anna Troussas) to make a donation and/for more information.

2019 STEWARDSHIP - By this time everyone should have received their mailing from the Stewardship committee with a letter and a 2019 Stewardship card.  Please take the time to sit down and fill out the card and pray over what you feel you can give to help support and run Our Church.  On average it takes $1500.00 a day to keep Holy Trinity up and running.  Your gracious Stewardship is a reflection on the love and community that we have here at Holy Trinity.  We are truly Blessed.  If you have any questions and/or would like more information regarding Stewardship, please see Georgette or Peter Kennedy or any Parish Council member.  Blank 2019 Stewardship pledge cards will also be available for pickup in the Narthex.  THANK YOU for your support.

THANK YOU to EVERYONE who selected an Angel Tree ornament for children who attend Glengarry Elementary. As a reminder, please bring the gifts wrapped with a gift tag showing the child's first name and the number listed on the top of the ornament, to the church by Sunday, December 16. Also, please bag the gifts with name and number label on the bag. Deposit them on the stage with the Christmas tree. Someone from AHEPA (contact Tim Weeks) and Philoptochos (contact Sandra Pappas) will be there to receive your gifts each Sunday through December 16.  For more information, please contact Tim Weeks at timgweeks@gmail.com or 615-293-8178.

The Book Group is now reading On Fasting and Feasts by St. Basil the Great.  It is available in the bookstore for $17.  Stop by and pick up your copy today!  We will be meeting next Sunday, December 16th at 7:00 pm at the home of Helen Rogers and Larry Kamm to discuss.

Philoptochos has soft white wheatberry (for use in making kollyva) for sale.  The bags are 2 lbs and are for sale for $3.00.  Anyone interested, please see Alexandra Pappas.

If you would like to host a coffee hour, please contact the Church office at (615) 333-1047.

The Consecration of the Church of the Resurrection (Holy Sepulchre) in the Holy City of Jerusalem

The majestic Church of the Resurrection, built by Saint Constantine the Great and his mother Helen, was consecrated in the year 336. In the year 614, this edifice was destroyed by the Persians, who set fire to it. Modestus, the Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Theodosius, and later Patriarch of Jerusalem, rebuilt the church in 626 and had it reconsecrated. In 637, Jerusalem fell to the Moslems; however, the holy shrines were left intact. But in 934, on the Sunday of Pascha, the Saracens set fire to part of this church. Again in 969, the Moslems set fire to the dome of the church, plundered all the sacred objects that were found therein, and surrendered John IV, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, to the flames. In 1010, the Moslems, under Hakim the Mad, Caliph of Egypt, destroyed the church to its foundations, but in 1028, by the mediation of Emperor Romanus III Argyrus of Constantinople, the church began to be rebuilt on a more modest scale. This third edifice was completed and reconsecrated in 1048. In 1099, the crusaders took Jerusalem and ruled there for eighty-eight years, and during this time they made certain changes in the structure, which, for the most part, has remained unaltered ever since (See also Sept. 13).

The Conception by St. Anna of the Most Holy Theotokos

According to the ancient tradition of the Church, since Saint Anna, the Ancestor of God, was barren, she and her husband Joachim remained without children until old age. Therefore, sorrowing over their childlessness, they besought God with a promise that, if He were to grant them the fruit of the womb, they would offer their offspring to Him as a gift. And God, hearkening to their supplication, informed them through an Angel concerning the birth of the Virgin. And thus, through God's promise, Anna conceived according to the laws of nature, and was deemed worthy to become the mother of the Mother of our Lord (see also Sept. 8).
