Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Mode

The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, * and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. * You rose on the third day, O Lord * and Savior, granting life unto the world. * For this reason were the powers of heaven crying out to You, O Life-giver: * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; * glory to Your eternal rule; * glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind.

Apolytikion for Synaxis of the 12 Apostles in the Third Mode

O Holy Apostles, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Apolytikion for the Church in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Blessed are You, O Christ our God; you made the fishermen all-wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them you drew the world into your net. O Lover of mankind, glory to You.

Evloyitós i, Hristé o Theós imón; o pansófous tous aliís anadhíxas, katapémpsas aftís to pnévma to áyion, ke dhi aftón tin ikouménin sayinéfsas, Filánthrope, dhóxa si.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

A protection of Christians unshamable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, please reject not the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: hasten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 18.4,1.
Their voice has gone out into all the earth.
Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16.

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

Gospel Reading

Synaxis of the Twelve Holy Apostles
The Reading is from Matthew 9:36, 10:1-8

At that time, when Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaios, and Thaddaios; Simon the Cananaean. and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out, charging them, "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And preach as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying, give without pay."

Wisdom of the Fathers

He puts an end to the woman's fear ... He sets her right, in respect of her thinking to be hid ... He exhibits her faith to all, so as to provoke the rest also to emulation ...
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 31 on Matthew 9, 4th Century

But of what laborers doth He speak here? Of the twelve disciples...He sent them out alone. ...Because though they were but twelve, He made them many from that time forward, not by adding to their number, but by giving them power. ...He Himself at once ordains them...Whence it is evident that Himself is the husbandman, Himself the Lord of the harvest...Still the Spirit was not yet given...How then did they cast out the spirits? By His command, by His authority. ...Seest thou the greatness of their ministry? Seest thou the dignity of apostles?...See how He provides for their conduct, and that no less than for their miracles, implying that the miracles without this are nothing. Thus He both quells their pride by saying, "Freely ye have received, freely give;" and takes order for their being clear of covetousness.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 32 on Matthew 9, 4th Century

Summer is here...which means school is just around the corner in August! Holy Trinity is once again teaming up with FOCUS North America to provide school supplies to homeless and needy children in Metro Nashville.  On June 30th and July 7th, there will be a sign-up table in the fellowship hall with 96 backpacks and school supply lists. Sign up with coordinators Tim & Teresa Weeks and return your supplied backpacks to the same location on Sundays, through the deadline of August 4th. Donations of $10 will also cover the costs of the backpacks. Let's do this!  For more information, please contact Tim Weeks at timgweeks@gmail.com.

The Church is in need of volunteers to work on the Maintenance Committee.  Helpful skills include basic knowledge of AC, electrical and mechanical.  Maintenance committee members coordinate and supervise vendors on behalf of the Parish Council.  It is a 2 to 3-year commitment.  The current committee is John Miller, Lambert Lamberson & Kareem Jabbour.  Please contact the Church office if interested at (615) 333-1047 or htgocoffice@gmail.com.

Message from Georgette Kennedy, Stewardship Chair: Summer has started!  It is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends.  Our Church is our family, too.  While you are away this summer, please remember your pledge commitments to your Church family.  If you have not yet participated in our Stewardship program by making a pledge, please find the forms in the Narthex or ask for me, Georgette Kennedy, or any usher or Parish Council member and we will be glad to help.  If you are not sure you filled out a form, we can ask Anna in the office, or you can go ahead and fill out another one just to be sure.  We are just a little short of reaching our Stewardship goal.  Please pray about it and take the time to support the Church.  Also, mark your calendars for our July 28th Stewardship Appreciation Luncheon.  Thank you!

If you are interested in hosting a coffee hour, please contact the Church office at 615-333-1047 or htgocoffice@gmail.com.

                                     CHURCH ETIQUETTE FAQs

Who may receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church?

Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and therefore is offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Everyone is welcome to receive the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) at the end of the Divine Liturgy.

How should I dress in the Orthodox Church?

Wear modest and appropriate attire.  Common sense and good judgment should prevail.  Avoid wearing lipstick when venerating the icons and receiving Holy Communion.  Also, please refrain from chewing gum.

Why do the Ushers/Parish Council ask us to wait before entering at certain times of the service?

There are several parts of the Liturgy where all movement within the Sanctuary should be restricted, including entering the Nave from the Narthex.  These parts are:

1)       Procession of the Priest and Acolytes with the Gospel

2)       The reading of the Epistle and Gospel

3)       The priest’s homily (sermon)

4)       The Great Procession of the Priest and Altar Boys with the Holy Gifts

5)       The recitation of the Nicene Creed

6)        The prayers of offering and consecration (From “Thine own of thine own…” until “Especially for our most Holy Lady….”

7)       The recitation of the Lord’s Prayer

8)       Special services (40-day blessings, memorials, processions…)

My child is being noisy.  What should I do?

Children are a great blessing in Church.  It is very special to hear our young people begin to participate in the Liturgy, by reciting the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and singing along with our hymns.  It is also important that children are present from a very young age to absorb the holy atmosphere of the Divine Liturgy.  But sometimes, children have a hard time being quiet or sitting still.   Little noises here and there are not worrisome, but in those times when the situation becomes very boisterous, there is a cry room located in the back of the Sanctuary in addition to a foyer with a monitor to watch the Liturgy while the child calms down.

Today, then, begins a new liturgical cycle of our Church, one in which we must make every effort to live the witness of all the Saints of our Church, which stretches across ceaseless centuries since the Day of Pentecost, and which draws a straight line of our faith from the time of the Holy Apostles and the Holy Martyrs – men and women.
