Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

The women disciples of the Lord, having learned from the Angel the joyous news of the Resurrection and having rejected the ancestral decision, then told the apostles elatedly: Death has been stripped of its power; Christ God has risen, granting to the world His great mercy.

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Mary of Egypt

When Mary was only twelve years old, she left her parents and departed to Alexandria, where she lived a depraved life for seventeen years. Then, moved by curiosity, she went with many pilgrims to Jerusalem, that she might see the Exaltation of the venerable Cross. Even in the Holy City she gave herself over to every kind of licentiousness and drew many into the depth of perdition. Desiring to go into the church on the day of the Exaltation of the Cross, time and again she perceived a certain invisible power preventing her entrance, whereas the multitude of people about her entered unhindered. Therefore, wounded in heart by this, she decided to change her way of life and reconcile herself to God by means of repentance. Invoking our Lady the Theotokos as her protectress, she asked her to open the way for her to worship the Cross, and vowed that she would renounce the world. And thus, returning once again to the church, she entered easily. When she had worshipped the precious Wood, she departed that same day from Jerusalem and passed over the Jordan. She went into the inner wilderness and for forty-seven years lived a most harsh manner of life, surpassing human strength; alone, she prayed to God alone. Toward the end of her life, she met a certain hermit named Zosimas, and she related to him her life from the beginning. She requested of him to bring her the immaculate Mysteries that she might partake of them. According to her request, he did this the following year on Holy and Great Thursday. One year after this, Zosimas again went thither and found her dead, laid upon the ground, and letters written in the sand near her which said: "Abba Zosimas, bury here the body of wretched Mary. I died on the very day I partook of the immaculate Mysteries. Pray for me." Her death is reckoned by some to have taken place in 378, by some, in 437, and by others, in 522. She is commemorated also on the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent. Her life was recorded by Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem.

George the Great Martyr and Triumphant

George, this truly great and glorious Martyr of Christ, was born of a father from Cappadocia and a mother from Palestine. Being a military tribune, or chiliarch (that is, a commander of a thousand troops), he was illustrious in battle and highly honoured for his courage. When he learned that the Emperor Diocletian was preparing a persecution of the Christians, Saint George presented himself publicly before the Emperor and denounced him. When threats and promises could not move him from his steadfast confession, he was put to unheard-of tortures, which he endured with great bravery, overcoming them by his faith and love towards Christ. By the wondrous signs that took place in his contest, he guided many to the knowledge of the truth, including Queen Alexandra, wife of Diocletian, and was finally beheaded in 296 in Nicomedia.

His sacred remains were taken by his servant from Nicomedia to Palestine, to a town called Lydda, the homeland of his mother, and then were finally transferred to the church which was raised up in his name. (The translation of the Saint's holy relics to the church in Lydda is commemorated on November 3; Saint Alexandra the Queen, on April 21.)

If April 23 falls on or before Great and Holy Pascha, the Feast of St. George is translated to Bright Monday.


Lazarus

Lazarus Saturday

Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary, the friends of the Lord Jesus, had given Him hospitality and served Him many times (Luke 10:38-4z; John 12:2-3). They were from Bethany, a village of Judea. This village is situated in the eastern parts by the foothills of the Mount of Olives, about two Roman miles from Jerusalem. When Lazarus - whose name is a Hellenized form of "Eleazar," which means "God has helped," became ill some days before the saving Passion, his sisters had this report taken to our Saviour, Who was then in Galilee. Nonetheless, He tarried yet two more days until Lazarus died; then He said to His disciples, "Let us go into Judea that I might awake My friend who sleepeth." By this, of course, He meant the deep sleep of death. On arriving at Bethany, He consoled the sisters of Lazarus, who was already four days dead. Jesus groaned in spirit and was troubled at the death of His beloved friend. He asked, "Where have ye laid his body?" and He wept over him. When He drew nigh to the tomb, He commanded that they remove the stone, and He lifted up His eyes, and giving thanks to God the Father, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." And he that had been dead four days came forth immediately, bound hand and foot with the grave clothes, and Jesus said to those standing there, "Loose him, and let him go." This is the supernatural wonder wrought by the Saviour that we celebrate on this day.

According to an ancient tradition, it is said that Lazarus was thirty years old when the Lord raised him; then he lived another thirty years on Cyprus and there reposed in the Lord. It is furthermore related that after he was raised from the dead, he never laughed till the end of his life, but that once only, when he saw someone stealing a clay vessel, he smiled and said, "Clay stealing clay." His grave is situated in the city of Kition, having the inscription: "Lazarus the four days dead and friend of Christ." In 890 his sacred relics were transferred to Constantinople by Emperor Leo the Wise, at which time undoubtedly the Emperor composed his stichera for Vespers, "Wishing to behold the tomb of Lazarus . . ."

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Wisdom of the Fathers

'I am come to send fire on earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?' (Luke 12:49). Unless we go through this fire that consumes the decaying passions of our nature, we shall not see the fire transformed into light, for it is not Light that comes first, then Fire: in our fallen state burning precedes enlightenment. Let us, therefore, bless God for this consuming fire. We do not know altogether but we do at least know 'in part' (I Cor. 13:9) that there is no other way for us mortals to become 'children of the resurrection' (Luke 20:36), to reign together with Christ. However painful this re-creating may be; however it may distress and lacerate - the process, agonising as it is, will be a blessed one.

The cause and origin of the passions is the misuse of things. Such misuse results from perversion of our character. Perversion expresses the bias of the will, and the state of the will is tested by demonic provocation. Parish News & Events

NO LONGER NECESSARY TO REGISTER TO ATTEND DIVINE LITURGY

In order to keep with the current "Social Distancing" requirements of Anchorage, we can only fit about 60 people in the main Nave of the Church. For Sunday morning liturgies, we are no longer requiring pre-registration, but asking for your cooperation in following the guidelines of our Municipality. This is a first-step in slowly returning to a more normal Sunday worship, and as long as it goes well we can look forward to further relaxing our current guidelines. Please cooperate and do not crowd in next to someone that is not in your social "bubble", and take turns worshiping downstairs in the hall if necessary.


CHARITABLE GIVING ON PALM SUNDAY

As part of our continuing “Good and Faithful Steward” program, the stewardship committee is hosting a benefit on Palm Sunday.  We will ‘pass the basket’ after Liturgy and vote for a charity to donate towards. There is no intention to pit two charities against one another, but, rather, to give parishioners a chance to vote for the charity of their choice and have a voice in who the money goes to. Everyone present is going to be asked to vote regardless of whether or not they make a contribution.

 Both of these organizations are reputable and do good work to help local folks in need.  Please give thoughtful consideration to each organization and consider making a donation on Palm Sunday.  If you cannot be at church on Palm Sunday, you may send a donation to the church (2800 O’Malley Road, Anchorage, AK 99507) with a note that it is for the Palm Sunday Good and Faithful Steward benefit.  You may also vote for one of the charities or not, that is up to you.  Thank you and God bless you and give you strength for the remainder of Lent. 


LAZARUS SATURDAY YOUTH RETREAT

Please Join us for some fun baking and dying Easter eggs, decorating candles and Easter baskets on Lazarus Saturday, April 24th! Children will be separated into four small groups. We will be sanitizing all stations in between and masks are required. There are only 25 spots available, so please let us know if you would like to sign up by April 20th. CONSIDERING HOLY WEEK AND PASCHA SERVICES

04/18/2021

The good news is that our Holy Week and Pascha services will be open for our parishioners to attend, unlike last year. We will be doing our best to maintain social distancing requirements and masks are required. Parishioners who arrive after the main Nave of the Church is fully occupied (about 70 people), will be directed downstairs to the hall, where the service will be live-streamed. There will be NO OUTSIDE processions this year (with the Epitaphios on Friday night, or on Pascha night). While this is not what we would prefer, we are thankful to at least be able to have a more full Holy Week and Pascha than last year!


AGAPE VESPERS GOSPEL READINGS

On the afternoon of Pascha we will offer the traditional "Agape Vespers" with the reading of the Holy Gospel and proclamation of the Resurrection in multiple languages. If you would like to read in your native language, or a language that you have studied, please talk with Fr Vasili ASAP to reserve your spot!
