Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 3:9-17.

Brethren, we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw - each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are.

The Reading is from Matthew 14:22-34

At that time, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying "Take heart, it is I; have no fear."

And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they entered the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἠνάγκασεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν, ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους. Καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ᾽ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι. ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ. Τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν, βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων, ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος. Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν. O Merciful One, You came from on high, and condescended to Your three day burial to save us from suffering. You are our Life and our Resurrection. Glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

Neither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life.

Let us, then, cry out loudly with Peter's words, "Lord, save us." And if we are willing to receive Christ into our ship; that is, to have Him dwell in our hearts; we shall immediately find ourselves at the land to which we are hastening. What land is that? Clearly, it is the promised land, heaven, the land of the meek, of them that refrain from evil. Cosmas of Aetolia, Equal to the Apostles

Our holy Father Cosmas was from the town of Mega Dendron (Great Tree) of Aetolia. At the age of twenty, he went to study at the school of the Monastery of Vatopedi on the Holy Mountain. Later, he came to the Athonite Monastery of Philotheou where he was tonsured. With the blessing of his abbot, he departed for Constantinople where he learned the art of rhetoric, and thereafter, he began to preach throughout all the regions of northern Greece, the Ionian Islands, but especially in Albania, for the Christian people there were in great ignorance because of the oppression and cruelty of the Moslems. Finally, in 1776, after having greatly strengthened and enlightened the faithful, working many signs and wonders all the while, he was falsely accused by the leaders of the Jewish people and was executed by strangulation by the Moslem Turks in Albania.

Covid Update

COVID-19 SAFETY MEASURES

All faithful must be careful to protect those who are not vaccinated, including those with pre-existing conditions and children under the age of twelve. If you are not feeling well or have any symptoms that are associated with Covid-19, please stay home and seek medical attention. More importantly, notify Fr. Jason by calling the Church office.

Our goal at Kimisis is to provide a safe and healthy worship experience for our parish family as we implement the current safety guidelines from our civil and ecclesiastical authorities.

We continue to clean and disinfect the church between each service, require masks, hand washing/sanitizing, social distancing, and a limited capacity of 50%.

 

Guidelines for Attending Divine Worship

 

MASKS 

At this time, the Direct Archdiocesan District is lifting the mandatory mask mandate and social distancing guidance for those faithful who are fully vaccinated in New York State. The Archdiocese encourages all parishes to continue following local and state health and safety guidelines where applicable.

 

You must wear a mask if you are not vaccinated!!!

 

UPON ARRIVAL

Social distancing begins when you enter the Church. Please do not congregate, and socialize in the narthex. Light your candle, pray, and be seated. Please venerate Icons by bowing and doing the sign of the cross. No touching or kissing.

 

FOLLOW THE SIGNS

Please follow signs to posted entry points and maintain distancing via the ground markers. These have been prepared in advance to provide safe social distancing and need to be respected for everyone’s well-being.

 

SEATING

Seating has been designed to adhere to social distancing requirements. Only members of the same family may sit together without distancing between them. Please remain seated throughout the entire service, unless you must excuse yourself for a valid reason.

 

HOLY COMMUNION AND DISMISSAL

Holy Communion will be offered at the usual time in the usual manner. As Orthodox Christians, we believe that Holy Communion is the medicine of immortality. For any reason, if you would like to receive Holy Communion privately, please inform Fr. Jason.

Please remember the following:

  • Please approach the line in an orderly manner. 
  • Proceed through the Communion line with respect to Social Spacing
  • Remove your mask below your chin before approaching the Chalice.
  • Receive the Body and Blood in a natural manner from the spoon. Do not simply leave your mouth open or do anything else to attempt to "avoid the spoon." This can cause the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to spill. 

Please be patient with your brothers and Sisters in Christ. Your parish council is doing their best to guide everyone through this difficult time.

Everyone at Kimisis is essential. This means that we must show love and respect one another by exercising reasonable caution. The most important thing that we can do is to love God together by praying with, and for one another!

Youth Ministries

Youth Ministries

Our goal is to help our young people experience their faith in a way that will help form them as Orthodox Christians. Through ministries such as Sunday School and GOYA, our aim is to help guide them as they grow with one another in a community of faith as they embrace the Orthodox way of life.

 

SUNDAY SCHOOL

We look forward to a new and exciting year ahead. Thank you for your participation and patience during this year. Have a safe summer. We will will keep you posted with updates, and summer resources.

 

GOYA

The mission of GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth of America) is to strengthen the relationship of young Orthodox Christians with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The program works to educate and edify young members of the Church, encouraging them to become active participants in the life of the Body of Christ through worship, fellowship, Service, witness. Philoptochos

 

The benevolent works of Philoptochos are a continuation of Christ’s ministry on earth.  We have an opportunity, through our participation in the ministries and programs of Philoptochos, to return our time, talents, and resources back to God.

Another purpose of Philoptochos is to help the Church with its many ministries. Philoptochos is an organization of women who enjoy the fellowship and spiritual enrichment of working together as Orthodox Christians. 

Our chapter meets monthly in our church hall. Fundraisers, activities, and service projects are planned for our monthly meetings. Our chapter also recognizes that evening meetings are not always the best time for all members. Special gatherings may also be scheduled at certain times, and will be announced in advance.

Festival Baking: A special thanks goes out to everyone who helpes us bake for our Greek Festival!

FOOD DRIVE: The local community has seen an increased need in requests for food and goods for families with young children at this time. Our Ladies Philoptochos will be running an ongoing Food Drive to support the local Dutchess County area food banksthroughout the fall/winter months. There is a marked bin in thenarthex that will be open for donations and delivered regularly. Child friendly food items have been specifically requested.

 

Please consider bringing your non-perishables each Sunday to fill the bin for those in need in our community.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Poughkeepsie AHEPA Chapter #158 held its 8th Golf Outing on July 26 at McCann Memorial Golf Course with 76 golfers participating and supporting the event on a very hot 90-degree day. The event raised $13,000. The post-outing dinner was held at the Poughkeepsie Hellenic Center.

Chapter President Stephen J. Miller presented a check for $11,000 to Presbyter Fr. Jason Dickey and Parish Council President Mike Bakatsias on August 8 following the Divine Liturgy at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church.

Archbishop Elpidophoros Travels to the Ecumenical Patriarchate

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America departed for Istanbul following the celebration of the Dormition of the Theotokos at the eponymous parish in Brooklyn, New York. The Archbishop will remain abroad through the Beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year (September 1st) and will be at the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the Synaxis of Hierarchs of the Ecumenical Throne, as well as the Feast of the Indiction.

Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos Appointed Director of Religious Education

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announced today the appointment of His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos as the new Director of Religious Education for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In addition, His Grace will continue in his role of Chief Secretary of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Archdiocese.

We sing with the Angels of God: Ἐν τῇ Γεννήσει τὴν παρθενίαν ἐφύλαξας, ἐν τῇ Κοιμήσει τὸν κόσμον οὐ κατέλιπες Θεοτόκε. In giving Birth you preserved your virginity, and in Your Dormition you have not forsaken the world, O Theotokos.

As I stand here tonight with all of you, under this magnificent dome, in this Church of exquisite beauty and deep theology, I cannot help but call to mind a verse from a Psalm of David. He speaks of the Mother God as the “daughter of the King.”
