Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 31.11,1.
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous.
Verse: Blessed are they whose transgressions have been forgiven.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 6:11-17.

Brethren, you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. Do not yield your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but yield yourselves to God as men who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed.

Gospel Reading

4th Saturday after Pentecost
The Reading is from Matthew 8:14-23

At that time, when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever; he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and served him. That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases."

Now when Jesus saw great crowds around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. And a scribe came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head." Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead." And when he entered the boat, his disciples followed him.

Hymns of the Day

Apolytikion for Andrew the Hymnographer in the Fourth Mode

The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Andrew, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Andrew of Crete Author of the Great Canon

Saint Andrew was from Damascus; his parents' names were George and Gregoria. He became a cleric and secretary of Theodore and Patriarch of Jerusalem; from this, he is called "the Jerusalemite." He was present at the Sixth Ecumenical Council in Constantinople, which was convoked in 680 during the reign of Emperor Constantine IV (668-685). He became deacon of the Great church in Constantinople, that is, the Church of the Holy Wisdom of God, then Archbishop of Crete. He reposed in 720 or 723. Beside his other sacred writings, he also composed various hymns, among which is the famous Great Canon, which is chanted during Great Lent (see the Thursday of the Fifth Week of the Fast).

    Orthodox Food Store

    Orthodox Food Store

Dear Faithful of Saint Spyridon, We hope everyone has been healthy and safe in these times of crisis. The Orthodox Christian community has started a new initiative with the guidance of our spiritual leader, his Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael. It is a food relief program in which all twenty-six Chicagoland Greek Orthodox Churches are participating. The program calls for donors to make different "kits" to assist those less fortunate. There are three different kinds of kits: 1. COVID kit (one-gallon Ziploc bags, face masks, latex or plastic gloves, small hand sanitizer, antibacterial bars of soap, Band-Aids, small bottles of hand moisturizer) 2. CARE kit (bottles of water, snack/granola bars, small packs of crackers-sealed, small deodorant, small bars of antibacterial soap, small bottles of shampoo, small tubes of toothpaste, sealed toothbrushes, one-gallon Ziploc bags) 3. DINNER Kit (cans of corn, cans of green beans, pasta – 1- or 2-pounds bags or boxes, jars of pasta sauce, jars of jelly/jam, bags of uncooked rice, cans of beans, boxes of graham crackers) These kits are to be pre-packaged at home with all the necessary materials included. The items for the COVID and Care kits are to be packaged in one large Zip-Lock bag and the Dinner Kit should be put in a large paper bag (ex. Trader Joe's bag). The specific items for each kit are laid out in the image below. You may drop-off kits on Tuesdays from 3 PM to 5 PM. Large plastic bins will be placed outside the front doors near the office for kits to be deposited. Our first drop off day will be on Tuesday, June 23rd. For any questions, or if you wish to drop off a kit sometime other than the designated time, please contact the office at (708)-385-2311. Thank you for supporting the Orthodox Store Mini stry.

    Saint Spyridon Festival Raffle Appeal

    Saint Spyridon Festival Raffle Appeal

Dear Faithful of Saint Spyridon, With the Covid-19 pandemic impacting everyday life, we thank you for your unwavering support and wish you and your loved ones continued health and joy in our Lord. During this difficult period, your prayers and kind generosity have helped our beloved parish continue its ministry to those in need and to face the various challenges as best we can. Slowly our worship life has resumed while ensuring the safety of the attendees and all our parish members. Given the situation, we are not able to host any social events this summer, including our parish festival which serves as an important event in our community life and a vital fundraiser that supports our parish operation. We kindly ask that you offer what you can in lieu of the festival this year, either in the form of a donation or by purchasing the festival raffle ticket that was mailed to you earlier this year. The raffle drawing will take place on Sunday, July 12th at 1:00 p.m. You may send your donation or raffle purchase by mail or through our parish website: www.Saint-Spyridon.org. Your fervent prayers and loving support are greatly appreciated. In Christ’s love and gratitude, Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos

Wisdom of the Fathers

And the multitudes for their part evinced this great love, and were following with much affection; but some one person, a slave of wealth, and possessed with much arrogance, approaches Him, and saith, "Master, I will follow Thee whithersoever Thou goest."(5) Seest thou how great his arrogance? For as not deigning to be numbered with the multitude, and indicating that he is above the common sort, so he comes near....And whence is this manifest? From the answer which Christ makes, meeting...the temper shown in its meaning. For, "What?" saith He. "dost thou look to gather wealth by following me? Seest thou not then that I have not even a lodging, not even so much as the birds have?"...And in many other places also Christ is clearly doing this; He doth not openly convict, but by His answer He manifests the purpose of them that are coming unto Him....And in the opposite cases too He doth so; as in that of Nathanael, saying, "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile."
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 27 on Matthew 8, 4th Century

Prayer for our Nation on Independence Day

O Lord Jesus Christ our God, the God of all mercies and compassions, Whose mercy cannot be measured and Whose love for mankind is an unfathomable deep: As unprofitable servants falling down with fear and trembling before Your majesty, we humbly offer thanksgiving for Your deep compassion revealed in the benefits You bestowed upon our land; we glorify, praise, hymn and magnify You as Lord and Master and Benefactor; and again bowing down in thanksgiving for Your immeasurable and ineffable loving-kindness, humbly we pray:  As now You have counted Your servants worthy by receiving our supplications and mercifully fulfilling them, likewise in the time to come, as we flourish in sincere love for You and in every virtue, grant all Your faithful to receive Your blessings.  Deliver our land and its rulers from every evil circumstance:  grant them peace and tranquility, count them worthy always to offer thanksgiving to You, to tell of Your most-gracious blessings, and to sing to You, to Your eternal Father and to Your most-holy, good and consubstantial Spirit; God worshipped in one essence.  Glory to You, O God, our Benefactor, unto ages of ages. Amen.”
