Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 63.11,1.
The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord.
Verse: Oh God, hear my cry.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 16:1-16.

Brethren, I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deaconess of the church at Cenchreai, that you may receive her in the Lord as befits the saints, and help her in whatever she may require from you, for she has been a helper of many and of myself as well. Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I but also all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks; greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epainetos, who was the first convert in Asia for Christ. Greet Mary, who has worked hard among you. Greet Andronicos and Junias, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners; they are men of note among the apostles, and they were in Christ before me. Greet Ampliatos, my beloved in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys. Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the family of Aristobulos. Greet my kinsman Herodion. Greet those in the Lord who belong to the family of Narcissos. Greet those workers in the Lord, Tryphaina and Tryphosa. Greet the beloved Persis, who has worked hard in the Lord. Greet Rufus, eminent in the Lord, also his mother and mine. Greet Asyncritos, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brethren who are with them. Greet Philologos, Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.

Gospel Reading

6th Tuesday after Pentecost
The Reading is from Matthew 13:24-30

The Lord said this parable. "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the householder came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seeds in your field? How then has it weeds?' He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?' But he said, 'No; lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"

Hymns of the Day

Apolytikion for Aquila of the 70 in the Third Mode

O Holy Apostle Aquila, intercede with the merciful God that He grant unto our souls forgiveness of offences.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Aquila the Apostle among the 70

Saint Aquila, who was from Pontus of Asia Minor, was a Jew by race and a tent-maker by trade. In the year 52 he and his wife Priscilla were in Corinth when Saint Paul first came there. They gave him hospitality, and the Apostle remained with them for many days, himself working at the same trade as they (Acts 18:2-3). And having believed in Christ through Paul, they followed him from that time on, working together with him and suffering perils with him for the sake of the preaching of the Gospel, as he himself testifies concerning them in his Epistle to the Romans, saying: "Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my helpers in Christ Jesus: who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the nations" (Rom. 16:3-4). When and where they reposed is unknown.

Our Holy Father Joseph the Confessor, Archbishop of Thessalonica

Saint Joseph was the brother of Saint Theodore the Studite (see Nov. 11). He also is called Studite, especially when he is mentioned together with his brother. According to Codinus, both of them composed the canons of the Triodion during the reign of Leo the Armenian, while in the Church of Saint Romanus (see Nov. 18); he is not to be confused with Saint Joseph the Hymnographer (Apr. 3). When Saint Joseph became Archbishop of Thessalonica, he was exiled thrice because of his godly zeal for the holy icons, suffering many hardships, imprisonments in dark dungeons, hunger, thirst, and every tribulation, in the midst of which he departed unto eternal life in 833.

    Stewardship Forms 2020

    Stewardship Forms 2020

Stewardship 2020 With the Covid-19 pandemic impacting everyday life, we thank you for your unwavering support and wish you and your loved ones continued health and joy in our Lord. During this difficult period, your prayers and kind generosity have helped our beloved parish continue its ministry to those in need and to face the various challenges as best we can. Slowly our worship life has resumed while ensuring the safety of the attendees and all our parish members. Given the situation, we are not able to host any social events this summer, including our parish festival which serves as an important event in our community life and a vital fundraiser that supports our parish operations. This reality makes our stewardship support all the more important to the well-being of our parish community. If we can all give our fair share as stewards of our church, while also inviting new stewards to join our parish family, we can hope to achieve our goal where at least half of our parish support comes from stewardship. We wish to thank the 250 Stewards who have committed their stewardship for 2020. Stewardship contributions can be made online at our website: www.Saint-Spyridon.org through Tith.ly or PayPal. You can also send in your stewardship by mail or by stopping by the church during office hours.

    Orthodox Food Store

Dear Faithful of Saint Spyridon, We hope everyone has been healthy and safe in these times of crisis. The Orthodox Christian community has started a new initiative with the guidance of our spiritual leader, his Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael. It is a food relief program in which all twenty-six Chicagoland Greek Orthodox Churches are participating. The program calls for donors to make different "kits" to assist those less fortunate. There are three different kinds of kits: 1. COVID kit (one-gallon Ziploc bags, face masks, latex or plastic gloves, small hand sanitizer, antibacterial bars of soap, Band-Aids, small bottles of hand moisturizer) 2. CARE kit (bottles of water, snack/granola bars, small packs of crackers-sealed, small deodorant, small bars of antibacterial soap, small bottles of shampoo, small tubes of toothpaste, sealed toothbrushes, one-gallon Ziploc bags) 3. DINNER Kit (cans of corn, cans of green beans, pasta – 1- or 2-pounds bags or boxes, jars of pasta sauce, jars of jelly/jam, bags of uncooked rice, cans of beans, boxes of graham crackers) These kits are to be pre-packaged at home with all the necessary materials included. The items for the COVID and Care kits are to be packaged in one large Zip-Lock bag and the Dinner Kit should be put in a large paper bag (ex. Trader Joe's bag). The specific items for each kit are laid out in the image below. You may drop-off kits on Thursdays from 3 PM to 5 PM. Large plastic bins will be placed outside the front doors near the office for kits to be deposited. Our first drop off day will be on Tuesday, June 23rd. For any questions, or if you wish to drop off a kit sometime other than the designated time, please contact the office at (708)-385-2311. Thank you for supporting the Orthodox Store Mini stry.

Wisdom of the Fathers

The former parable [of the sower] then means their not receiving Him; this, their receiving corrupters. For indeed this also is a part of the devil's craft, by the side of the truth always to bring in error, painting thereon many resemblances, so as easily to cheat the deceivable. Therefore He calls it not any other seed, but tares; which in appearance are somewhat like wheat. Then He mentions also the manner of his device. For "while men slept," saith He....And He signifies also that the error comes after the truth...For so after the prophets, were the false prophets...and after Christ, Antichrist. For unless the devil see what to imitate, or against whom to plot, he neither attempts, nor knows how....so here again sleep occasions our ruin; so that there is need of continual watchfulness. Wherefore He also said, "He that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved."...He forbids [the uprooting of tares]...And this He said, to hinder wars from arising, and blood and slaughter...[and to] wait for the proper season....Either He means this, If ye are to take up arms, and to kill the heretics, many of the saints also must needs be overthrown with them; or that of the very tares it is likely that many may change and become wheat....So long as they stand by the wheat, we must spare them, for it is possible for them even to become wheat but when they have departed, having profiled nothing, then of necessity the inexorable punishment will overtake them.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 46 on Matthew 13, 4th Century
