Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 98.9,1.
Exalt the Lord our God.
Verse: The Lord reigns; let the people tremble.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Thessalonians 3:6-18.

Brethren, we command you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, we did not eat any one's bread without paying, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you. It was not because we have not that right, but to give you in our conduct an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: If any one will not work, let him not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work in quietness and to earn their own living. Brethren, do not be weary in well-doing.

If any one refuses to obey what we say in this letter, note that man, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. Do not look on him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the mark in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Gospel Reading

Friday of the 10th Week
The Reading is from Luke 19:12-28

The Lord said this parable, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return. Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, 'Trade with these till I come.' But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading. The first came before him, saying, 'Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.' And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.' And the second came, saying, 'Lord, your pound has made five pounds.' And he said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.' Then another came, saying, 'Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin; for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.' He said to him, 'I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?' And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.' (And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten pounds!') 'I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'" And when he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

Hymns of the Day

Apolytikion for Martyr James the Persian in the First Mode

Be Thou entreated for the sake of the sufferings of Thy Saints which they endured for Thee, O Lord, and do Thou heal all our pains, we pray, O Friend of man.

Apolytikion of St. Spyridon in the First Mode

O Father, God-bearer, Spyridon, you were proven a champion and Wonder Worker of the First Ecumenical Council. You spoke to the girl in the grave and turned the serpent to gold. And, when chanting your prayers, most sacred One, angels ministered with you. Glory to Him who glorified you; glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Mode

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.

James the Great Martyr of Persia

This Saint was from the city of Bythlaba and was of noble birth; he was the closest and most honoured friend of Isdiger (or Yazdegerd) I, King of Persia (reigned 399-420). Though a Christian from his youth, James renounced Christ because he was allured by the King's friendship and flatteries. When his mother and his wife learned of this, they declared to him by letter that they would have nothing more to do with him, since he had preferred a glory that is temporal to the love of Christ. Wounded in soul by these words and coming to himself, the Saint wept over his error, and repudiated the worship of the idols. Therefore, becoming exceedingly wroth, the King - this was Bahram (or Varahran) V (reigned 421-438), Isdiger's son and successor - condemned him to a most bitter death, the likes of which not even a brute beast was ever condemned to: that is, his body was dismembered at every joint of his arms and legs. And so, when he had been cut asunder limb by limb to his very hips and shoulders, the courageous Martyr was finally beheaded, in the year 421.

    Stewardship 2020

    Stewardship 2020

Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 9:10) Notice the connection the Apostle Paul makes between increasing your store of seed and enlarging the harvest of your righteousness. When we are equipped with enough resources to give generously, our capacity to produce a greater effect is increased. Paul makes a holy assumption here that, as God supplies, the Corinthians by the time of his writing would use the blessings appropriately—that is, for righteous works, such as funding the mission and work of the church. Join us in practicing the Apostle Paul’s generous assumption as we give to the Lord with what he has given us.. You can offer your donations by mail or on-line through our parish website which is now featuring Tithe.ly as one of its donation platforms. Everyone’s assistance is greatly appreciated. We thank the 300 Stewards who have already committed their stewardship for 2020. Stewardship materials are available on our website.

COVID 19 Parish Relief Fund Upate

Please take a moment to watch this video by His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael. The Metropolis of Chicago announced recently it had exceeded its $250,000 fundraising goal for the COVID-19 Parish Relief Fund. Thank you to all you contributed to the COVID-19 Parish Relief Fund, especially at a time when such displays of community, friendship, and love were most needed.

Metropolitan Nathanael's Advent Message

He whom nothing can contain has been contained in a womb. He is in the Father's bosom and His Mother’s embrace. Fleshless as He was, He willingly took flesh. And He Who Is became what He was not, for us (3rd Kathisma from the Matins of the Nativity)

Beloved clergy and dear sisters and brothers in Christ, cherished family and friends of the Holy Metropolis of Chicago: Several months have passed since my last letter to you. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have moved away from traditional means of communications and have become more comfortable with and reliant on video messaging. After much reflection and prayer, the blessed period of Advent provides a unique opportunity for me to communicate some thoughts with you through this more traditional medium—the written word. In prior years, much of our time and attention during this season would have been drawn to transient and materialistic things. In the past, we were likely to gaze at beautifully decorated storefronts; today, we shake our heads in dismay as neighborhood stores are boarded up. In the past, we spent hours considering what gifts to buy our friends and loved ones; today, many of our friends and neighbors worry about their ability to provide food and shelter for their loved ones.

In the past, many of us looked forward to Christmas and holiday parties; today, we brace ourselves as we enter yet another “shut-down” due to the spike in COVID-19 cases. To say that 2020 has posed numerous challenges that none of us could have predicted is an understatement. No one anticipated a global pandemic and very few ever considered the delicate nature of our social fabric. Not only have our friends and families experienced great distress, but our parishes and cities have also been affected by the rise in civil unrest and the spread of the pandemic. And yet, the love of God continues to inspire the best in us. Your spirit of charity and your love for others are moving. Certainly, your philanthropic gestures are a reminder that the outpouring of love for neighbor comes naturally to disciples of Christ because He has first loved us. As we begin the blessed Christmas Fast, I urge you to keep this truth close to your heart and steer away from self-serving exercises of self-denial.

During this blessed period, I encourage you to set aside time each day to reflect on the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Prayerfully consider how the Lord’s Nativity transforms our very being and how it invites us to express our new internal reality through tangible expressions of love and charity. As our leaders extend or issue new measures to address the COVID-19 pandemic, do not become overwhelmed by limitations placed on our movements; celebrate, instead, our liberation from death. As people debate the results of our elections, steer away from divisive controversies and ideologies; embrace, instead, Christ, Who is the truth, the life and the way, and Who is not the author of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33). As you continue to provide for your loved ones, do not worry about what you will eat or drink, or what you will wear (Matt. 6:25); give charitably, instead, to those who barely have food to eat or a warm and safe place to lay their head.

In so doing, my beloved sisters and brothers, we imitate Christ, Who, despite walking on the wings of the winds, does not hesitate to empty Himself taking the form of a servant, becoming what He was not, for our salvation. Conveying to you and those most dear to you my heartfelt love, I remain In need of your prayers, +NATHANAEL Metropolitan of Chicago
