Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16.

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles; Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaios, and Simon who was called the Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came forth from him and healed them all.

O Father, God-bearer, Spyridon, you were proven a champion and Wonder Worker of the First Ecumenical Council. You spoke to the girl in the grave and turned the serpent to gold. And, when chanting your prayers, most sacred One, angels ministered with you. Glory to Him who glorified you; glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.

Simon the Zealot & Apostle

This Apostle was one of the Twelve, and was called Simon the Cananite by Matthew, but Simon the Zealot by Luke (Matt. 10:4; Luke 6:15). The word "Cananite" used by Matthew is believed to be derived from kana, which in the Palestinian dialect of Aramaic means "zealot" or 'zealous"; Luke therefore translates the meaning of "Cananite." Later accounts say that he was the bridegroom at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, where the Lord Jesus changed the water into wine, making this the first of His miracles (John 2:1-11); according to some, he is called Cananite because he was from Cana (according to others, from the Land of Canaan). Simon means "one who hears."

    The Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society of St. Spyridon, Palos Heights offers a $1,000 scholarship to one high school senior OR college student who is a member of our parish. This is a competitive scholarship based on need and merit with the award winner to be selected upon recommendation by the Scholarship Committee. Applicants must be accepted into an accredited college, university or vocational program OR currently attending an accredited college, university or vocational program.     Camp Kalokairaki

    Camp Kalokairaki

    Join us this summer for a five-day immersive Greek language camp for students in K - 6th grade. Every day we will focus on a different region of Greece, its local customs, traditions, music, foods, and stories as well as its Orthodox religious sites. Our "itinerary" will include Thessaloniki/Mainland Greece, Kerkyra/Eptanisa, Peloponissos/Crete, the Aegean Islands, and Cyprus. Daily activities will include crafts, music, and gym time dedicated to teaching students about traditional Greek children's games. Camp is limited to 40 students.     With great anticipation and excitement, we are happy to announce that Plutarchos Academy registration is now open for the 2021-2022 School Year! Full in-person classes will be offered for grades K-6th (unless school closures are mandated). Online classes are offered to students that have graduated 6th grade. Registration is open for everyone on a first come, first serve basis. Current Saint Spyridon Greek School families and Parish Stewards take priority. Application deadline is May 28, 2021. Space is limited and you are encouraged to register as soon as possible. A $100 non-refundable application fee per family is due when the application forms are submitted to the Church office.. The application fee will be applied to tuition once enrolled. But the head of every good endeavor and the guiding force of right actions is perseverance in prayer. By means of it we can daily obtain the rest of the virtues by asking God for them. By this means are engendered in those deemed worthy the fellowship of God's holiness and of spiritual energy and the attachment of the mind disposed toward the Lord in ineffable love. For the person who daily forces himself to persevere in prayer is enflamed with divine passion and fiery desire from a spiritual love toward God, and he receives the grace of the sanctifying perfection of the Spirit.
