This Week....

Welcome to Saint George Church!

"Come and See"

John 1:46b

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Beloved family of Saint George Greek Ortrhodox Church,

We pray to our merciful Lord that you and your families have all been healthy and well during these challenging times.  The pandemic and resulting governmental restrictions on places of worship and fellowship have not been easy, however there is good news:  The Church will be open again this week (Sunday, June 14th) on a limited basis (due to the state’s restrictions/guidelines).  The details are the following:

1)      Attendance is restricted to eight individuals, below the age of 65, on a first come, first served basis. The first eight people who will send an email to frioannikios@goarch.org, will be able to attend the Orthros at 9:30 AM, and theDivine Liturgy at approx. 10:30 AM.

2)      The faithful must wash and/or sanitize their hands upon entering the Narthex.

3)      The faithful except for children and those with medical reasons must wear a mask during Liturgy excluding Holy Communion.

4)      The faithful must do their best to maintain physical distance (except if you live together) and touching/kissing of icons.

May our faith in Christ continue to give us strength to deal with life’s challenges and may our love for our Lord Jesus Christ and one another continue to grow, as we re-engage in our communal life. We take immense courage in the Lord's exhortation to His people: "I have said this to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Our Marilena’s Meals program is on hold for the time being. We have donated our funds to NYC Relief and to the Coalition for the Homeless, as they are continuing their efforts to help our most vulnerable members of NYC; those without food and shelter.

If you would like to help those living in NYC without food or shelter, the following organizations are currently safely running operations:

NYC Relief:  https://nycr.givecloud.co/coronavirusresponse

Coalition for the homeless:  https://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/donate/

We hope to resume our efforts at St. George in September 2020.

PROSPHORO (offering bread)
A prosphoro (Greek for offering) is a small loaf of leavened bread used in Orthodox Christian liturgies. The term originally meant any offering made to a temple, but in Orthodox Christianity it has come to mean specifically the bread offered at the Divine Liturgy (Eucharist). We are blessed at Saint George that Kyria Dina Manos bakes prosphora for us as needed. This is a very special ministry and we thank God for Kyria Dina's service to our church.

WINE FOR HOLY COMMUNION If you would like to offer wine to be used for the preparation of Holy Communion at Saint George Church, you are welcome to do so. The sweet wine that we use for Holy Communion is Nama Byzantino.

Matins Gospel Reading

Second Orthros Gospel

Second Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back, for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.

Epistle Reading

First Mode.

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16.

Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

2nd Sunday of Matthew

2nd Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 4:18-23

At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Mode
