MARILENA'S MEALS: I was hungry and you fed me."  Matthew 25:35

Our Marilena's Meal program will be running this summer on Sunday July 25 and Sunday August 29th. The full 2021 - 2022 schedule will be released soon.

On Sunday June 27th, we ran our "live" outreach program for the first time since February 2020!  We successfully distributed 80 meals to hungry New Yorkers who are currently living without food and shelter.

We invite any vaccinated volunteers that would like to help us prepare and distribute meals to attend on July 25th and August 29th.  We will begin putting together the bagged meals at 9:45am, and will aim to leave church to distribute meals near Penn Station at 11am.

---->If you would like more information about volunteering, please contact May Vlachos at marilenasmeals@gmail.com  Thank you!

---->If you cannot physically volunteer, please consider supporting our efforts through a donation.

2020-2021 program information:
For the past year, we have partnered with the Antonio Olivieri Drop-In Center at 257 West 30th Street, as they are continued their efforts to give aid to those in need.

With the funds donated in September, October and November 2020, we purchased 58 pairs of sweatpants and 38 sweatshirts, as we were alerted that those are the items that are most in need for the men and women receiving services at the center.  We also purchased gloves for when the weather turns cold.

Our December 2020 funds raised were donated to Philoxenia.  Philoxenia will be arranging for dinner for the residents of the Jan Peek House in Peekskill, NY, a shelter for about 25 individuals who are homelesshttps://www.chhop.org/. They provided 40 meals for the residents so that they can have a second serving and so that there is enough food for any walk-ins.  Visit https://philoxenia.org/ for more information.

For our January 2021 program, our two 11th grade teen volunteers, Kayla Malcolm-Joseph and Leah Allen, donated funds that they raised to purchase thirty $10 Dunkin Donuts gift cards for those in need at the Antonio Olivieri Drop-In Center.  Hand written cards from the girls are included with each gift card.

The funds raised for our February and March 2021 program were donated to help support a pop up food pantry, supporting community members in need of food in Harlem.  This effort was organized by Philoxenia.   Marilenas Meals sponsored 24 bags of groceries (the equivalent of 360 meals).

We are actively looking for sponsors and other donations.  Please contact May Vlachos for information on sponsorship and donations: marilenasmeals@gmail.com

2020 - 2021 Program:

September 2020 - Sponsored by an anonymous donor and dedicated with love and gratitude to God for helping their mother live a cancer-free, long and healthy life.

October 2020 - Sponsored by Irene Gregov and her family, in loving memory of her mother Popi Stefanidis, a faithful long time parishioner of St. George.

November 2020 -  Sponsored with love by May Vlachos, in celebration of her godchildren Peter Bounougias, Jack Theodore Venditto and Sophia Anna Onesto.

December 2020 -  Dedicated in loving memory of our grandparents: Theodore Vlachos, May Vlachos, James Karitenos, Amelia Karitenos, Panagiotis Nictas, Marianthi Nictas, Nicholas Mikedis and Anna Mikedis, by Ted, Maria, Ioanna and Eleni Vlachos.

January 2021 -  Sponsored by our two 11th grade volunteers, Kayla Malcolm-Joseph and Leah Allen.  The teens worked with their school, Sacred Heart Greenwich in Greenwich, Connecticut to raise money.  Kayla and Leah volunteer during our traditional Marilena’s Meals program every month, and are two of our most diligent, dedicated and youngest volunteers.

February 2021 -  Dedicated in loving memory of Athanasios Lolis and Alexandra Dimitrakakis by Soula Lolis.

March 2021 -  Thank you to our generous anonymous sponsor.  We are so thankful for you.

April 2021 -  Sponsored with love by Christina Halatsis.

May 2021 -  Sponsored by Thanos and Marilena, for the health and wellbeing of our families and everyone.  With gratitude and humility for making it through this past year.

June 2021 -  Sponsored with love by Steve and JoAnne Gregos.

We are actively looking for sponsors.  Please contact May Vlachos for information on sponsorship and donations: marilenasmeals@gmail.com

Capital Campaign extended - one goal accomplished; another goal created

We are pleased to inform you that the Capital Campaign for St. George has reached its goal of raising $130,000!    This money, held in a separate Capital Campaign account, will be used to renew the façade of the church and for various improvements to the interior.

We have formed a construction committee which will review contractor bids and prepare their recommendation to the Parish Council in June.   There are many details to be addressed and we are always concerned about surprises that our 1886 building may hold; but we are happy to share with you that we have achieved this milestone.

We considered the original $130,000 goal a ‘stretch goal’ and, because of this, we did not include the replacement of the aging main façade window.   Because of the success of the last two months, we are extending our Capital Campaign to raise an additional $40,000 – primarily for the replacement of the main window with a first-rate stained glass depiction of St. George (initial sketch below).

We thank all of you who have contributed to the Capital Campaign.   The generosity that you have shown has given us the confidence to proceed forward with this final piece of the façade renewal.

To give online, please go to: http://www.saintgeorgenyc.org/giving/donate1   Checks can be sent to: Saint George Greek Orthodox Church 307 W 54th St, New York, NY 10019 Make checks payable to: Saint George Greek Orthodox Church

We look forward to providing you an update in the weeks to come.

Very truly yours,

Fourth Orthros Gospel

Fourth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.

Plagal Second Mode.

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 31.11,1.
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous.
Verse: Blessed are they whose transgressions have been forgiven.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15.

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.

All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the 4th Ecumenical Council

Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the 4th Ecumenical Council
The Reading is from Matthew 5:14-19

The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord has shown the power of his reign. He has conquered death by death and become the first born of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of Hades and has granted the world great mercy.

Apolytikion for Sun. of the Holy Fathers in the Plagal Fourth Mode

You are greatly glorified, O Christ our God, who established our Fathers as luminaries upon the earth, and through them led us all to the true Faith. O Most compassionate, glory to You.

Apolytikion for the Church in the Fourth Mode

Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, and champion of kings, O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

A protection of Christians unshamable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, please reject not the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: hasten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the 4th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls from the 13th to the 19th of the present month, we chant the Service to the 630 Holy and God-bearing Fathers who came together for the 4th Ecumenical Council who assembled in Chalcedon in 451, to condemn Eutyches, who taught that there was only one nature, the divine, in Christ after the Incarnation, and Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who illegally received Eutyches back into communion and deposed Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had excommunicated Eutyches.

In the Slavic tradition, on this Sunday, the Fathers of the first six Ecumenical Councils are all commemorated.

Holy Martyr Emilian

This Martyr was from Dorostolum in Thrace, the servant of a certain pagan in the days of Julian the Apostate (361-363). As a fervent Christian, Emilian abominated the error of the pagans, and one day entered the temple and broke all the idols with a hammer. Seeing that others were arrested and beaten for this, he gave himself up of his own accord. He was mercilessly whipped, then cast into a fire, in which he gave up his soul without his body suffering harm.
