The Very Reverend and Reverend Clergy Esteemed Members of the Metropolitan Council, Esteemed Members of the Parish Councils, Philoptochos Sisterhood, Faculty and Students of the Catechetical and Greek Afternoon Schools, Directors and Participants of all Youth Organizations, and all devout Orthodox Christians of the Communities of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey
My Beloved in the Lord,
During the past several months our nation has seen immense difficulties, families have endured severe hardships, and countless people have felt the devastating effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. These challenges tested our fortitude as our local communities and state authorities put sweeping measures in place in an effort to prevent the further spread of this vicious virus. These measures prevented the devout faithful of our Ecclesiastical Communities to gather togetherin common prayer. Thanks be to God, these restrictions were lifted in due time and faithful Orthodox Christians were able to return to their local Parish Communities.
Although all of you have returned to your Parish Communities, there is still an understandable sense of cautiousness. The faithful have been encouraged to keep social distancing, masks have been required during the course of the Divine Services, sanitizing protocols have been rigorously enforced, and all of our parishes have and continue to abide by all local, state, and CDC regulations. This cautiousness has occasionally led people to mistakenly believe that the manner in which they receive the most Sacred Body and Blood of our Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ poses some type of danger to them. This is most lamentable as nothing can be further from the truth.
The Holy Eucharist is the most pure and sanctifying gift from God which we could ever encounter. Our Lord’s Body and Blood could never be contaminated and, as the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate stated in its official Communiqué on June 25, 2020, “it is impossible that through this Mystery of Mysteries any disease might be communicated to those who partake.” It is with these words, recognizing the sanctifying and healing power of both body and soul that is offered to us in the Holy Eucharist that I exhort you, my dearly beloved, to have faith in the Divine Gift that God is offering us which will heal us of all our infirmities. Let the words of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, a preeminent Father of the Church, inspire you when he says, “Do not, therefore, regard the bread and wine as simply that; for they are, according to the Master’s declaration, the body and blood of Christ. Even though the senses suggest to you the other, let faith make you firm” (Catechetical Lectures 22, 6).
Therefore, when you come to the House of God, be encouraged by the words which are proclaimed immediately prior to the faithful receiving Holy Communion, “With the fear of God, with faith, and with love, draw near.” Do not fear to approach and to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, according to the traditional Orthodox manner from the common chalice and from the common spoon, which is granted unto you for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life.
Our Lord sanctifies all people and all things with whom He comes into contact. His Body and Blood sanctifies and makes pure all vessels, both human vessels and material vessels, which partake in the Mystery of Holy Communion. The very Incarnation of Christ sanctified the world and all material things when He took on flesh, therefore, all vessels which contain and distribute the Holy Eucharist are purified and made sacred through Him. Thus, we the devout faithful, as His human vessels, and the common chalice and common spoon, as His material vessels, are purified and sanctified through contact with His most Sacred Body and His most Precious Blood.
It is my fervent and constant prayer that God grants each of you even stronger faith so that you may, with abounding love and faith in our Savior, approach to receive His most pure, sacred, and precious Body and Blood for the benefit of your physical and spiritual well-being. Praying our loving Lord blesses you, your families, and your Communities with spiritual strength, I remain,
With Paternal Love and Blessings,
† E V A N G E L O S

Fifth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:13-35
At that time, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see." And he said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?" And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 10:1-10.
Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, "Who will ascend into heaven?" (that is, to bring Christ down) or "Who will descend into the abyss?" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved.

5th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 8:28-34; 9:1
At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way. And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.
5th Sunday of Matthew
These Martyrs contested in Ancyra in 106, during the reign of the Emperor Trajan. Saint Proclus was seized as a Christian and, confessing his faith, was burned on his sides and belly, was hung upon a beam with heavy stones tied to his feet, and finally was taken away to be shot with arrows. As he was being led forth, his nephew Hilary encountered him and greeted him, and was himself seized. After his uncle had been slain with arrows, Hilary, because he would not deny Christ, was tormented, then beheaded.
On the Sunday that falls from the 13th to the 19th of the present month, we chant the Service to the 630 Holy and God-bearing Fathers who came together for the 4th Ecumenical Council who assembled in Chalcedon in 451, to condemn Eutyches, who taught that there was only one nature, the divine, in Christ after the Incarnation, and Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who illegally received Eutyches back into communion and deposed Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had excommunicated Eutyches.
In the Slavic tradition, on this Sunday, the Fathers of the first six Ecumenical Councils are all commemorated.
