If you are having problems with link or do not have access to the internet call the church office 973-584-0388 (leave a message and we’ll get back to you).

If you attended liturgy last Sunday, we kindly ask that you wait until Friday to reserve again, in order to allow an opportunity for other parishioners to attend a Sunday service.

Philoptochos Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive

Please bring to church no later than November 12, 2020. Food Drive is to benefit the Inter-Faith Food Pantry of Morris County and area food pantries. Items to bring: Turkey or Ham, Instant mashed potatoes, Brownie Mix, cake mix and icing, Nuts, mini marshmallows, pickles, Stuffing , Gravy, Roll mix or muffin mix, Salad dressing, Canned vegetables (low salt if possible), Canned yams, Hearty soups (low salt if possible), Coffee or tea, Apple, cranberry or other 100% juice, Canned fruit, Jell-O or pudding, Fresh potatoes or yams, Apples and oranges. Philoptochos Annual Coat Drive for Market Street Mission

We are asking if you have a gently used winter coat to donate that you bring it to the church by Monday, October 26 so we can donate in time for the coat drive. The Market Street Mission will hold their Annual Coat Drive in Novembr date to be determined. The mission wants only winter coats and apparel (hats & scarves) Please NO windbreakers or rain coats (they will not keep our homeless warm)

Hellenic Relief

Hellenic Relief Foundation helps families in Greece to overcome the needs of those facing economic hardship. We are collecting diapers, new or gently used clothing and sneakers for boys and girls (infants to 14 years of age). These items will be shipped to Greece by Hellenic Relief. Please bring these items to church by October 25. See flyer for more info.

Attending services at Saint Andrew

• If you cannot attend please cancel your reservation by using your Eventbrite confirmation or calling the church office and leaving a message

• Parishioners must sanitize their hands upon entering the Church.

• Parishioners must wear protective masks throughout the Services.

• Parishioners must adhere to the social distancing guidelines of keeping a six foot distance from other parishioners at all times in the pews and throughout the Church. The only exception being for families that have quarantined together, as they will be able to sit together in a designated section of the Church.

• Parishioners are not to wander in the Church, in the Parish facilities, or outside on the parish grounds.

• Small children shall not be allowed to roam the aisles.

• Parishioners must leave the Church premises, including the parking lot and exterior grounds, upon conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, all the while maintaining social distancing standards.

OPENING THE CHURCH

At this phase, our Church occupancy is limited during the service and is on a first come, first serve basis and we will adhere to the protocols outlined in our web site. In order to attend a service you MUST pre-register using the link which will become available a few days prior to the service or by calling the church during office hours (If NO Answer: please leave a message and we will return your call). You will then get a confirmation that you may attend the service. Please bring that with you when you come to church. If you are not able to attend, we invite you to participate in the celebration of the Divine Services through live streaming services that are available.

To the Reverend Clergy of the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey: May the grace and peace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be upon you and your loved ones.

It is with heartfelt sentiments of paternal care and affection that I would like to communicate with you in order to inform you of the decision made by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate today - during its current session in the Queen of Cities under the Chairmanship of His All-Holiness our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew - to transfer the Shepherd of your Metropolis, His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos, to the Holy Metropolis of Sardes, effective immediately.

Therefore, in light of this decision, kindly know that the Holy and Sacred Synod has appointed me as the Patriarchal Vicar in your now vacant Eparchy of New Jersey, and, as such, I promise to faithfully serve you and the entire Metropolis to the best of my abilities, so as to address your pastoral needs and ensure your collective spiritual prosperity and wellbeing. And so, according to the canonical order, beginning today, please commemorate my name in the divine services as the local Shepherd of your Holy Metropolis.

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal (me) Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Titus, my son, the saying is sure. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we chant the Service to the 350 holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which gathered in Nicaea in 787 under the holy Patriarch Tarasius and during the reign of the Empress Irene and her son, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, to refute the Iconoclast heresy, which had received imperial support beginning with the Edict issued in 726 by Emperor Leo the Isaurian. Many of the holy Fathers who condemned Iconoclasm at this holy Council later died as Confessors and Martyrs for the holy Icons during the second assult of Iconoclasm in the ninth century, especially during the reigns of Leo the Armenian and Theophilus.

Luke the Evangelist

This Apostle was an Antiochean, a physician by trade, and a disciple and companion of Paul. He wrote his Gospel in Greek after Matthew and Mark, after which he wrote the Acts of the Apostles, and dedicated both works to Theophilus, who, according to some, was Governor of Achaia. He lived some eighty-six years and died in Achaia, perhaps in Patras, the capital of this district. His emblem is the calf, the third symbolical beast mentioned by Ezekiel (1:10), which is a symbol of Christ's sacrificial and priestly office, as Saint Irenaeus says.

Apolytikion for Sun. of the 7th Ecumenical Council in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Most glorified art Thou, O Christ our God, Who hast established our Fathers as luminous stars upon the earth, and through them didst guide us all to the true Faith. O Most Merciful One, glory be to Thee.

Ὑπερδεδοξασμένος εἶ, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν, ὁ φωστῆρας ἐπὶ γῆς τοὺς Πατέρας ἡμῶν θεμελιώσας, καὶ δι' αὐτῶν πρὸς τὴν ἀληθινὴν πίστιν, πάντας ἡμᾶς ὁδηγήσας· πολυεύσπλαγχνε, δόξα σοι.

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For by seed here He means His doctrine, and by land, the souls of men, and by the sower, Himself .... For as the sower makes no distinction in the land submitted to him, but simply and indifferently casts his seed; so He Himself too makes no distinction of rich and poor, of wise and unwise, of slothful or diligent, of brave or cowardly; but He discourses unto all, fulfilling His part, although foreknowing the results.

When you see life's pleasures, beware that they might not distract you, for they conceal death's snares. Likewise a fisherman casts not his hook to no purpose. As bait for his hook, the enemy uses the delusion of sensuality to arouse desire, that he might thereby catch men's souls and subject them to himself. A soul which has been caught to serve the enemy's will then serves as a snare for other souls, for it conceals the grief of sin with its apparent delight.
