As well As a Six month Memorial Service for the repose of the soul of +Evangelos Tsakiris, beloved brother of Georgia Simonis.

Artoclasia Service: NATIONAL CHURCH MUSIC SUNDAY

Saint Andrew will observe Church Music Sunday with the Service of Artoclasia for the health and well being of our chanters and choir members. On this day, we will recognize those women and men who have heard and responded to the Lord’s invitation to be church musicians: that is, parish chanters and choir singers. As church musicians, these people represent the laity in the liturgical dialogue of our worship services. Their prayers in song enhance the beauty of our worship.

Philoptochos Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive

Please bring to church no later than November 12, 2020. Food Drive is to benefit the Inter-Faith Food Pantry of Morris County and area food pantries. Items to bring: Turkey or Ham, Instant mashed potatoes, Brownie Mix, cake mix and icing, Nuts, mini marshmallows, pickles, Stuffing , Gravy, Roll mix or muffin mix, Salad dressing, Canned vegetables (low salt if possible), Canned yams, Hearty soups (low salt if possible), Coffee or tea, Apple, cranberry or other 100% juice, Canned fruit, Jell-O or pudding, Fresh potatoes or yams, Apples and oranges. Philoptochos Annual Coat Drive for Market Street Mission

We are asking if you have a gently used winter coat to donate that you bring it to the church by Monday, October 26 so we can donate in time for the coat drive. The Market Street Mission will hold their Annual Coat Drive in Novembr date to be determined. The mission wants only winter coats and apparel (hats & scarves) Please NO windbreakers or rain coats (they will not keep our homeless warm)

Hellenic Relief

Hellenic Relief Foundation helps families in Greece to overcome the needs of those facing economic hardship. We are collecting diapers, new or gently used clothing and sneakers for boys and girls (infants to 14 years of age). These items will be shipped to Greece by Hellenic Relief. Please bring these items to church by October 25. See flyer for more info.

Attending services at Saint Andrew

• If you cannot attend please cancel your reservation by using your Eventbrite confirmation or calling the church office and leaving a message

• Parishioners must sanitize their hands upon entering the Church.

• Parishioners must wear protective masks throughout the Services.

• Parishioners must adhere to the social distancing guidelines of keeping a six foot distance from other parishioners at all times in the pews and throughout the Church. The only exception being for families that have quarantined together, as they will be able to sit together in a designated section of the Church.

• Parishioners are not to wander in the Church, in the Parish facilities, or outside on the parish grounds.

• Small children shall not be allowed to roam the aisles.

• Parishioners must leave the Church premises, including the parking lot and exterior grounds, upon conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, all the while maintaining social distancing standards.

At this phase, our Church occupancy is limited during the service and is on a first come, first serve basis and we will adhere to the protocols outlined in our web site. In order to attend a service you MUST pre-register using the link which will become available a few days prior to the service or by calling the church during office hours (If NO Answer: please leave a message and we will return your call). You will then get a confirmation that you may attend the service. Please bring that with you when you come to church. If you are not able to attend, we invite you to participate in the celebration of the Divine Services through live streaming services that are available.

The Psalms—Comfort in Time of Need

Psalm 128—The Wedding Psalm

Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.

Psalm 128:1

Good morning prayer team,

Psalm 128 is chanted at every wedding service in the Orthodox Church. It paints a picture of the ideal married life. It prays for the wife to be like a fruitful vine, giving birth to children who will gather like young olive shoots around the table. (Psalm 128:3) It prays for the couple to see their children’s children, in other words to see grandchildren (v. 6) Oftentimes, we feel cheated for someone when they die, let’s say, at age 70. We think that it young. They have young grandchildren. Or we hope for a little longer at age 90, when a person already has great-grandchildren. The prayer in this Psalm is for a couple to see their children independent, and married, and with children of their own. Thus, if we get into our 60s and see our children married with their own children, the prayer from our wedding service has been answered.

This Psalm is not only for married people, as its verses are a prayer for all people. First, the Psalmist writes that everyone who fears the Lord, who chooses to walk in the way of the Lord is blessed. (v. 1) It is true that the word translated as “fear” is the from the Greek word “fovo” which really does mean fear. Rather than think of this as fear of a vengeful God, who is ready to punish us, I think of the word “fear” applying to a life without God. In other words, we might say that “I’m afraid that a life without God is rather meaningless.” This then is not a paralyzing fear but a motivating fear. It’s like the college student who says “I’m afraid I won’t graduate if I don’t study harder.” This again is not a paralyzing fear but a motivating fear. So, blessed are all those who fear a life without the Lord, who are motivated to walk in His ways.

The person who follows after the Lord, who recognizes, appreciates and uses their talents, will “eat of the fruit of the labor of (their) hands.” (v. 2) This verse doesn’t promise riches, but it promises sufficiency. It also puts a value on the labor of our hands, on work. Part of the “walks in His ways” includes using our talents, to serve others, and to provide for ourselves.

Verse 2 continues “You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.” Those who labor for the Lord will be happy. Those who labor only for themselves will base their happiness on their income. Those who labor for the Lord will base their happiness not on income but on using their God-given talent to serve others.

Verse 3 pertains more specifically to married people. While verse 4 again applies to everyone: “Thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord.” This reiterates the point of verse one. Verse 4 also reminds the husband of the household to be the spiritual leader. The man who fears the Lord and who leads his household in the fear of the Lord will also be blessed.

Jerusalem was called the Holy City in Biblical times. It was the place where the temple was located. It was a place where people made pilgrimages to the temple. It was a place of commerce and prosperity. While most people lived an agrarian existence, Jerusalem offered refuge from the daily grind. Trips to Jerusalem were causes for celebration. Think going to New York, for fine food, good shows, and overall luxury. Verse 5 asks for God’s blessings on all people, whether they are married or not. And asks that God’s faithful followers know the “prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of (their) life.”

Whether a person is married or not, whether they have children or not, the happy and blessed home is based on walking in the ways of the Lord, working hard, and using our talents. The final blessing bestowed by the Psalm is that of peace, that all of God’s followers, descendants of the children of Israel, may know the peace of God, which as we read in Philippians 4:7 is a peace “which passes all understanding,” a peace that can come in the midst of conflict. This peace has the power to keep our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, something we must strive to do even in these times of uncertainty.

Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways! You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine on the walls of your house; your children will be like young olive shoots around your table. Lo, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. The Lord bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life! May you see your children’s children! Peace upon Israel! Psalm 128

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal (me) Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant (me) patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health. Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed. Εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς· ἐθεώρουν τὸν σατανᾶν ὡς ἀστραπὴν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πεσόντα. ἰδοὺ δίδωμι ὑμῖν τὴν ἐξουσίαν τοῦ πατεῖν ἐπάνω ὄφεων καὶ σκορπίων καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ ἐχθροῦ, καὶ οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς οὐ μὴ ἀδικήσῃ. πλὴν ἐν τούτῳ μὴ χαίρετε, ὅτι τὰ πνεύματα ὑμῖν ὑποτάσσεται· χαίρετε δὲ ὅτι τὰ ὀνόματα ὑμῶν ἐγράφη ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. ᾿Εν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἠγαλλιάσατο τῷ πνεύματι ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν· ἐξομολογοῦμαί σοι, πάτερ, κύριε τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς, ὅτι ἀπέκρυψας ταῦτα ἀπὸ σοφῶν καὶ συνετῶν, καὶ ἀπεκάλυψας αὐτὰ νηπίοις· ναί, ὁ πατήρ, ὅτι οὕτως ἐγένετο εὐδοκία ἔμπροσθέν σου.

Luke the Evangelist

This Apostle was an Antiochean, a physician by trade, and a disciple and companion of Paul. He wrote his Gospel in Greek after Matthew and Mark, after which he wrote the Acts of the Apostles, and dedicated both works to Theophilus, who, according to some, was Governor of Achaia. He lived some eighty-six years and died in Achaia, perhaps in Patras, the capital of this district. His emblem is the calf, the third symbolical beast mentioned by Ezekiel (1:10), which is a symbol of Christ's sacrificial and priestly office, as Saint Irenaeus says.

Gerasimus of Cephalonia

Saint Gerasimus was from the Peloponnesus, the son of Demetrius and Kale, of the family of Notaras. He was reared in piety by them and studied the Sacred writings. He left his country and went throughout various lands, and finally came to Cephalonia, where he restored a certain old church and built a convent around it, where it stands to this day at the place called Omala. He finished the course of his life there in asceticism in the year 1570. His sacred relics, which remain incorrupt, are kept there for the sanctification of the faithful.

James (Iakovos) the Apostle, brother of Our Lord

According to some, this Saint was a son of Joseph the Betrothed, born of the wife that the latter had before he was betrothed to the Ever-virgin. Hence he was the brother of the Lord, Who was also thought to be the son of Joseph (Matt. 13: 55). But some say that he was a nephew of Joseph, and the son of his brother Cleopas, who was also called Alphaeus and Mary his wife, who was the first cousin of the Theotokos. But even according to this genealogy, he was still called, according to the idiom of the Scriptures, the Lord's brother because of their kinship.

This Iakovos is called the Less (Mark 15:40) by the Evangelists to distinguish him from Iakovos, the son of Zebedee, who was called the Great. He became the first Bishop of Jerusalem, elevated to this episcopal rank by the Apostles, according to Eusebius (Eccl. Hist., Book II: 23), and was called Obliah, that is, the Just, because of his great holiness and righteousness. Having ascended the crest of the Temple on the day of the Passover at the prompting of all, he bore testimony from there concerning his belief in Jesus, and he proclaimed with a great voice that Jesus sits at the right hand of the great power of God and shall come again upon the clouds of heaven. On hearing this testimony, many of those present cried, "Hosanna to the Son of David." But the Scribes and Pharisees cried, "So, even the just one hath been led astray," and at the command of Ananias the high priest, the Apostle was cast down headlong from thence, then was stoned, and while he prayed for his slayers, his head was crushed by the wooden club wielded by a certain scribe. The first of the Catholic (General) Epistles written to the Jews in the Diaspora who believed in Christ was written by this Iakovos.

When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, all the powers in the Heavens cried out: O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

As the beloved physician and disciple, O Luke, heal with thy mystical surgery the passions of both my soul and body, and grant that I may enjoy complete health, and may honour thine all-lauded festival with gladness, and may shower thine august and most precious body with a rain of tears instead of myrrh; for like an inscribed monument of life in the wondrous temple of the Apostles, it crieth out unto all, even as thou didst before, when thou didst write the divine Gospel of Christ God.
