The Lord’s Voice 8/7/22
GOD'S PHILANTHROPY
The great miracle of the multiplication of the five loaves and the two fish is presented today, on the first Sunday of the month of August, and the eighth in the series of passages of the sacred Gospel of the holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew. As we also hear and read during today's gospel reading, after Christ scatters His philanthropy, with His abundant love and compassion, teaching the truth and working miracles to the crowds that had come to be informed, as eyewitnesses and hearing witnesses of His wonders, He then paternally heals their very natural need for satiety from the hunger that had understandably seized them, with the passage of their many hour stay there.
The offered Christ
We know from our experience, that Christ, in many ways, offers His whole self to each one of us who wishes to accept this offer. He came to serve the whole person, to nourish him with His presence, to support and build up His creature spiritually, mentally, and physically, with Himself as the foundation. With the same fervor and love, He calls to repentance, that teaches salvation through His will, that heals the various diseases, precisely thus we see and being moved, we conclude that He cares fatherly for the sustenance and service of people.
A foreshadowing of the Divine Eucharist
The multiplication of the five breads, resulting in the satisfaction of every need in the service of man, is an essential and blessed foreshadowing of the Divine Eucharist, i.e. of the offering of Christ’s body and blood, according to the handing down by Himself of the sacred mysteries in the upper room of the Mystical Supper. It is a practical sermon and an empirical proof of the truth, that the God-enlightened psalmist preaches in the Old Testament: “Cast upon the Lord your care of you and he will nourish you" (Ps. 54:23). In other words, leave to Christ the ministry of all your needs, trust Him, and in return you will receive His paternal love, His care, His interest and His intervention in every aspect of life, for your complete hypostasis and being, with a view to your salvation.
God expects us all to understand that heaven is our homeland, and that we are passers-by from this world, awaiting our participation in the joy of the Kingdom. We are not only able to hope for this, but we can also live it daily in the Divine Liturgy, with our participation in the holy body and precious blood of our Lord. The Divine Liturgy, even when it is performed in the simplest day and in the humblest place, is a window for the bright sun of the eighth day to enter the historical time of our life. This is the great gift that Christ, with His preaching, miracles, the Cross and His Resurrection offers us; this is a permanent invitation of His holy Body, i.e. of the Church, to the sinners of the whole world, "those who labor and are burdened" to come to Him. Especially today, where the world has raised to its first priority, the surrendering to the passions, individualism and its selfishness, the Lord's invitation always remains the proof of His love and goodness.
The Church today, the day after the glorious despotic feast of the Transfiguration of Christ, and one week before the great feast of the Mother of God’s Dormition and the Translation of the Theotokos, with the auspicious occasion of reading the gospel passage of the multiplication of the five loaves and the two fish, and the consequent multi-level satiation of the crowd of people, teaches us throughout time. It makes it clear to us, that life within her, is a constant and permanent multiplication of graces and gifts, and a sweet spiritual satiation. It remains to us who desire the taste of this offering to always remain in the joy of the Church

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.
Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Maximus the Confessor
The divine Maximus, who was from Constantinople, sprang from an illustrious family. He was a lover of wisdom and an eminent theologian. At first, he was the chief private secretary of the Emperor Heraclius and his grandson Constans. But when the Monothelite heresy became predominant in the royal court, out of hatred for this error the Saint departed for the Monastery at Chrysopolis (Scutari), of which he later became the abbot. When Constans tried to constrain him either to accept the Monothelite teaching, or to stop speaking and writing against it - neither of which the Saint accepted to do - his tongue was uprooted and his right hand was cut off, and he was sent into exile, where he reposed in 662. At the time only he and his few disciples were Orthodox in the East. See also January 21.
