Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. * To the robber You opened Paradise. * The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, * and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all * that You had risen, O Christ our God, * and granted the world Your great mercy.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Holy Cross in the First Mode

Save, O Lord, Thy people and bless Thine inheritance; grant Thou unto the faithful victory over adversaries. And by the power of Thy Cross do Thou preserve Thy commonwealth.

Apolytikion for Great Martyr Euphemia in the Third Mode

O Euphemia, Christ's comely virgin, thou didst fill the Orthodox with gladness and didst cover with shame all the heretics; for at the holy Fourth Council in Chalcedon, thou didst confirm what the Fathers decreed aright. O all-glorious Great Martyr, do thou entreat Christ God that His great mercy may be granted unto us.

Apolytikion for St. Anna (Dec. 9) in the Fourth Mode

Today the bonds of childlessness are loosed; for God hearkened to Joachim and Anna. And though it was beyond hope, He clearly promised them that they should bear a divine child, from whom was born the Uncircumscribable One Himself Who became a mortal, and through an Angel commanded them to cry unto her: Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, the Lord is with thee."

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

Lifted up on the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victories over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them a weapon for peace, an invincible standard.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Wisdom of the Fathers

And see how He also makes His discourse unexceptionable: not saying at all, "whether you will, or no, you must suffer this," but how? "If any man will come after me."
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 55 on Matthew 16, 1. B#54, p.339., 4th Century

"I force not, I compel not, but each one I make lord of his own choice; wherefore also I say, 'If any man will.' For to good things do I call you, not to things evil, or burdensome; not to punishment and vengeance, that I should have to compel.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 55 on Matthew 16, 1. B#54, p.339., 4th Century

OPAA big OPA! Thank you to all who came to work the festival and a very special thanks again to all the subcommittee heads for your efforts. There were many months of hard work preparing for the 'grand finale' which was the Opa! event itself. "Opa Season" starts in the Spring and officially ends with the event. Securing sponsors, food donors, and vendors were critical to this success. We were blessed with both food and monetary donations to help us manage the cost. We instituted some improvements this year which worked well and will continue to assess our efforts going forward. We are honored that our Opa! has won the "Best Foodie Event" in Hunterdon for the last 3 years and more recently,  it was selected as one of the '10 Best Fall Festivals in NJ' by American Towns Media. These are major achievements. Thank you for your efforts in achieving this success.  Diana Grina, Festival Chair

PC Corner

We would like to thank all of our parishioners, relatives, and friends who came out last week and during the weekend to help with the preparation and actual OPA event. Although the weather did not cooperate,  we managed to have a fantastic OPA event thanks to you and to all the people who came out in the rain!   Our festival has been now well established and recognized as the festival to go to. Again, Great job and thank you all!

On Saturday October 6, we will hold our Wine and Dine event which was rescheduled from June. This event will be held at the Soteropoulos residence, rain or shine. For any questions, or if you want to participate in the event, please see George Staikos

On Saturday November 17 and 18 (Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine) from 12 pm to 7 pm we will hold the Craft Vendors event,  which is our last event for 2018.  We agreed to hold this event last January to benefit the Church and all the ministries.  We need people to come forward and volunteer their time and talent to support this Craft Vendor event. We are looking for someone to chair the event, and we need all of you to let us know if you know of any vendors who may want to participate. We also need to have people serve food, clean up tables, and clean up after the event, etc.  Sofia Manoussakis (S_Manoussakis@yahoo.com)and Kristen Diagelakis (kristen81081@aol.com)have volunteered to lead the vendors effort. Please contact them if you know of any vendor.  Diana Grina (dianag2003@yahoo.com)is leading the advertising effort. John Kaldes (jskaldes@aol.comand phone 908-764-0220) is the temporary chair, but only until someone else comes forward.  Please see him if you are interested in becoming the Event Chair. Margaret Panageas (MPanageas.mp@gmail.com)  is chairing the food preparation and serving and anything associated with the Philoptohos. We need all of you to make this event successful for our church and ministries!

We anticipate that the iconographer will be back to install the icons in the Dome and the back wall sometime in November.  We have very few icons left, so if you would like to donate towards them, please see the list posted in the bulletin board at the church or contact John Kaldes, Jorge Ferreira or Father Anastasios.  We are looking into the opportunity to offer the receipt of donations towards the stain glass windows in the Dome. There are 8 windows and it would be cost effective to install them while the scaffolding is erected for the Dome iconography.  Further details on donations for the stain glass windows in the Dome will be available in the next few days.

The iconostasion has been completed and is currently being stained. It will be shipped to the broker in Piraeus the following week, and we expect it here in the US sometime in late October or early November. We will try to the shipment expedite through customs, and hope to have it erected in our church no later than the end of October.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new Greek School teacher this year, Zoe Sofiadou.  Registration has started and if you have any questions please see Maria Sfondouris, our new Greek School Director (msfondouris@gmail.com).We have enhanced our Greek School Program and hope that more of our parishioners will bring their children to Greek School!

Aimee Douvris is our new Director of the Sunday School Program (aimeedouvris@gmail.com). Any help you can provide to her in support of this very important program to our community will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again for all your support and let us know if you have any questions.

STEWARDSHIP:  Stewardship is the sharing of the talents and treasures that God has provided for us.  An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the Church. The parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith to become practicing Stewards.

2018 Stewardship Status: 135 Pledges totaling $137,279 for an average of $1,017 and $91,016 received to date.    It is important that all families complete a stewardship card to be considered a steward..  Current Stewardship List and other stewardship information is posted on bulletin board by the water cooler.

If you have not done so already, we ask that you prayerfully consider your Stewardship commitment and submit a 2018 pledge card as soon as you can.
