Thomas Sunday

Though the doors were shut at the dwelling where the disciples were gathered for fear of the Jews on the evening of the Sunday after the Passover, our Saviour wondrously entered and stood in their midst, and greeted them with His customary words, "Peace be unto you." Then He showed unto them His hands and feet and side; furthermore, in their presence, He took some fish and a honeycomb and ate before them, and thus assured them of His bodily Resurrection. But Thomas, who was not then present with the others, did not believe their testimony concerning Christ's Resurrection, but said in a decisive manner, "Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe." Wherefore after eight days, that is, on this day, when the disciples were again gathered together and Thomas was with them, the Lord Jesus came while the doors were shut, as He did formerly. Standing in their midst, He said, "Peace be unto you"; then He said to Thomas, "Bring hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not unbelieving, but believing."

And Thomas, beholding and examining carefully the hands and side of the Master, cried out with faith, "My Lord and my God." Thus he clearly proclaimed the two natures - human and divine - of the God-man (Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-29).

This day is called Antipascha (meaning "in the stead of Pascha," not "in opposition to Pascha") because with this day, the first Sunday after Pascha, the Church consecrates every Sunday of the year to the commemoration of Pascha, that is, the Resurrection.

Basil the Holy Martyr Bishop of Amasea

This Saint was Bishop of Amasia in Pontus, in the days of Licinius (reigned 308-324), fellow Emperor and brother-in-law of Saint Constantine the Great. Licinius' wife Constantia, sister of Saint Constantine, had as handmaid a virgin named Glaphyra. When it became known that Licinius had conceived a sinful desire for her. Constantia secretly sent Glaphyra away to the East. Coming to Amasia, she took refuge with Saint Basileus. When Licinius learned of this, he furiously commanded that both be brought before him. When the soldiers came for them, however, Saint Glaphyra had already departed to the Lord; she is also commemorated this day. Saint Basileus was taken alone to Nicomedia, where he was beheaded. His body was cast into the sea, but through divine revelation was found again and brought back to Amasia.

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

From His Eminence: Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Χριστὸς Ἀνεστή! Ἀληθῶς Ἀνεστή!
Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

Among the many details about the resurrection of Christ in the Gospels one fact stands out that is so relevant to our celebration of Pascha this year. In these accounts, those closest to Christ were hiding behind locked doors, as one Gospel states, “out of fear.” Christ, risen from the dead, breaks through those barriers and greets His disciples.

Yes, the risen Christ revealed Himself to the disciples who were hiding behind closed doors.

They were hiding because they were afraid. Their Master had suffered a terrible death on a cross. They were in hiding because they believed that they would be arrested and have the same fate. They were also dismayed. The movement they joined to bring liberation and justice to their land had ended, or at least, so they thought. In another Gospel account of the resurrection, two disciples said to a traveler, “We had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel,” (Luke 24:21). But Christ reveals Himself to the disciples. He is alive. He has risen from the dead.

Brothers and sisters, from our experience this past week, we can begin to understand what the disciples experienced. We have endured a Holy Week like no other in our memories. We have sheltered behind closed doors, not out of fear of arrest, but as an act of love for the health of our neighbors and ourselves. In these days, we have longed to be in our parishes, but instead have found solace in the live-streamed services, reading the Scriptures, in prayer, and practicing our faith at home. We have wondered, or perhaps even worried, about the effects that this Lent like no other, will have on our Church.

Yet, the risen Christ came to us just as He did to the disciples through those locked doors. The peace He gave to them, He also gives to us. The joy He gave to them, He also gives to us. The confidence He gave them to share the Good News, He also gives to us. So, my beloved brothers and sisters, how can we imitate those first disciples? How will we share the Good News?

While Christ rested in the tomb, the disciples thought their movement had ended. With the resurrection, in reality, it had just only begun.

The risen Christ is our message to the world. The power of death has been vanquished. “For God sent the Son into the world not to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:17). This is the Good News, par excellence, that the Church proclaims. The candles we have lit are a sign that Christ’s resurrection shines brightly throughout the world. The red eggs we will crack open, signify life emerging from the tomb.

These customs we will use today to proclaim the Resurrection. Our challenge is to share the Resurrection, not just tonight. His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew recently said, “The entire life of the Church is Pascha. Resurrection is the entire faith, ethos and culture of Orthodoxy.”

Armed with the message of the resurrection, Orthodox Christians have transformed the world by working “against everything distorted and malignant both in ourselves and in the damaged structure and fabric of a suffering creation” (For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church, §4). We have once again received the Good News of the Resurrection. We have, once again, been challenged to continue what Christ and His disciples began.

Dear Parish Family:

We hope this letter finds all of you healthy and secure as we work through these uncertain times together in faith, prayer and unity. Our focus remains on the health and well-being of our community, as well the health and vitality of our parish. Peace and strength come to us through continued prayer, worship and outreach.

We, like so many, find ourselves adjusting to rapidly changing situations – searching for ways to sustain our parish without the benefit of face-to-face worship and navigating the financial uncertainty of this shock to our way of life and economy. With this in mind, we would like to share three suggestions for reflection…

STAY PRESENT – with Christ through prayer, worship, and your connection with others

We all feel the void of not being able to attend church and commune with friends and family. Now is the time to focus on the opportunities and blessing we do have to be present in alternate ways.

· Carve out newly gained “stay home” time for prayer and reflection

· Reach out to family, friends, fellow parishioners, neighbors, our clergy

INVEST – your time, your talent, your treasure

In the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes, we read that there is “a time for every purpose…a time to plant, a time to reap…” Many of us are using newly found time to do this at home – planting gardens, doing projects around the house, etc. We should also reflect on doing this for our spiritual home, through prayer to sustain our spirit and contribution to sustain our church.

· Stay current with your stewardship and where possible, accelerate payment to help buoy us through the financial uncertainty of the coming months

· Offer your talent to the church who has a particular need for experience with virtual communication, social media and website development at this time

· Check in regularly with the church and community programs to see if outreach or volunteer assistance is needed

REFLECT – on ways you can do more

St. Anthony relies on you for our vitality, through your presence and in stewardship. Staying connected and sharing your gifts today light the way for others to share their gifts with God in the future.

· Make an offering to offset the giving you usually share when you attend church on Sunday (candle, tray and fellowship offerings)

· Offer additional donations to the extent you are able

Your Parish Council, in close partnership with Father Stephen and other dedicated members of our parish, are working hard behind the scenes to adapt to the current situation and sustain our parish through these uncertain times. Some of the key steps we are taking to mitigate the impact:

· We have stopped all unnecessary spending, paying only for church salaries, insurance, utilities and janitorial services (which have been reduced)

· We are applying for support offered through the Federal CARES Act. The “Paycheck Protection Program” offers churches funding support to sustain clergy and support staff salaries, as well as utility expenses There are limited funds available so we do not know at this time the extent to which we will receive additional financial support. More details will be provided as we learn more.

· We are implementing the ability to offer stewardship and donations online via debit/credit cards (This should be up and running in 1-2 weeks, an email will be sent when it is ready)

· We are reviewing the budget and working to create contingency plans for the anticipated reduction in income and stewardship we may face in the coming months

· We are leveraging the guidance, tools and resources being provided by the Archdiocese

This pandemic has shaken much of the world to almost a standstill, and we are thankful for all that you are doing to assist our parish and its faithful. If you find yourself in need, please do not hesitate to reach out to church or to one of us. As has been said much in the past weeks, this will be difficult, but together as one community, we can get through this. God willing, we will come through this stronger in faith and community. We look forward to the day we can open the doors of St. Anthony again, to worship and commune together.

Today we share this small “offering” that you may find useful as we continue to worship from afar individually and in families. These videos introduce two hymns for the Sunday of Thomas, and we believe they may be used in a number of ways to connect us more intimately to what we will be witnessing in our live stream experience, and to give a little understanding as to the work of the chanter in the service as well as inviting participation as our Metropolitan has suggested to us.
