Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Fourth Mode

You descended from on high, O compassionate One, and condescended to be buried for three days, so that from the passions You might set us free. Our life and resurrection, O Lord, glory be to You.

Apolytikion for All Saints in the Fourth Mode

Your Church is arrayed in the holy blood of Your Martyrs who witnessed throughout the world, as though in purple and fine linen. Through them she cries to You, Christ our God, "Send down to Your people Your tender love, grant peace from above to Your commonwealth, and to our souls Your great mercy."

Apolytikion for Prophet Elisseus in the Fourth Mode

The glorious Elias, * incarnate messenger of God, pillar of Prophets, * and second Forerunner of the coming of Christ, * sent grace from on high to Eliseus * that he might cleanse lepers and heal sickness * for all those who honor him.

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Mode

Emulating the ways of Elias the zealot, * and following the straight paths of the baptist O Father Anthony, * you made of the wilderness a city; * and did support the world by your prayers. * Wherefore intercede with Christ our God * that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Mode

O Planter of creation, Lord, to You does the entire world bring as an offering the God-bearing martyr Saints, as being nature's first fruits. At their earnest entreaties, keep Your Church in a state of profoundest peace, through the Theotokos, O Lord abundantly merciful.

The Sunday of All Saints

Honouring the friends of God with much reverence, the Prophet-King David says, "But to me, exceedingly honourable are Thy friends, O Lord" (Ps. 138:16). And the divine Apostle, recounting the achievements of the Saints, and setting forth their memorial as an example that we might turn away from earthly things and from sin, and emulate their patience and courage in the struggles for virtue, says, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every burden, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1).

This commemoration began as the Sunday (Synaxis) of All Martyrs; to them were added all the ranks of Saints who bore witness (the meaning of "Martyr" in Greek) to Christ in manifold ways, even if occasion did not require the shedding of their blood.

Therefore, guided by the teaching of the Divine Scriptures and Apostolic Tradition, we the pious honour all the Saints, the friends of God, for they are keepers of God's commandments, shining examples of virtue, and benefactors of mankind. Of course, we honour the known Saints especially on their own day of the year, as is evident in the Menologion. But since many Saints are unknown, and their number has increased with time, and will continue to increase until the end of time, the Church has appointed that once a year a common commemoration be made of all the Saints. This is the feast that we celebrate today. It is the harvest of the coming of the Holy Spirit into the world; it is the "much fruit" brought forth by that "Grain of wheat that fell into the earth and died" (John 12:24); it is the glorification of the Saints as "the foundation of the Church, the perfection of the Gospel, they who fulfilled in deed the sayings of the Saviour" (Sunday of All Saints, Doxasticon of Vespers).

In this celebration, then, we reverently honour and call blessed all the Righteous, the Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Shepherds, Teachers, and Holy Monastics, both men and women alike, known and unknown, who have been added to the choirs of the Saints and shall be added, from the time of Adam until the end of the world, who have been perfected in piety and have glorified God by their holy lives. All these, as well as the orders of the Angels, and especially our most holy Lady and Queen, the Ever-virgin Theotokos Mary, do we honour today, setting their life before us as an example of virtue, and entreating them to intercede in our behalf with God, Whose grace and boundless mercy be with us all. Amen.

The Holy Prophet Elisseus (Elisha)

The Prophet Elisseus, the son of Saphat, was from the town of Abel-me-oul and had been a husbandman. In the year 908 B.C., at God's command, the Prophet Elias anointed him to be Prophet in his stead. This happened while Elisseus was plowing his land, having twelve oxen under yoke. Straightway, Elisseus slew the oxen and cooked them, using the wooden plough and the other instruments of husbandry as firewood; then he gave the oxen as food to the people. Bidding farewell to his parents, he followed Elias and served him until the latter was taken up as it were into Heaven (see July 20). When Elisseus received his teacher's mantle and the grace of his prophetic spirit twofold, he demonstrated whose disciple he was through the miracles he wrought and through all that is related of him in the Fourth Book of Kings. He departed full of days and was buried in Samaria, about the year 839 B.C. But even after his death God glorified him; for after the passage of a year, when some Israelites were carrying a dead man for burial and suddenly saw a band of Moabites, they cast the dead man on the grave of the Prophet. No sooner had the dead man touched the Prophet's bones, than he came to life and stood on his feet (IV Kings 13:20-21). Mentioning this, Jesus the Son of Sirach says, "He did wonders in his life, and at his death his works were marvelous" (Ecclus. 48:14). It is because of such marvels that the faithful have reverence for the relics of the Saints (see also Jan. 16). His name means "God is savior."

Methodius the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople

As for Saint Methodius, he was born to wealthy parents in Syracuse of Sicily about the end of the eighth century. Being a presbyter, he was sent as an ambassador to Rome in 815 or 816 on behalf of Patriarch Nicephorus of Constantinople, who had been exiled by Leo the Armenian (see June 2). After Leo's death, he returned to Constantinople; but since he was a zealot for the veneration of the holy icons, he was immediately exiled by Emperor Michael the Stutterer to a fortress near Bithynia. When Michael died, he was freed for a short time; but then, because of his confession of the Orthodox Faith, he was imprisoned again by the Emperor Theophilus in a dark and foul-smelling sepulcher. Since this was not enough for the Emperor's inhumanity, he commanded that two thieves be shut up with Methodius, and when one of them died, that the corpse not be removed. While the Saint was imprisoned there, a certain poor fisherman ministered to his needs. Finally, when the Church received its freedom under Saint Theodora the Empress, the Saint ascended the patriarchal throne of Constantinople in 842. Together with the holy Empress, Methodius restored the holy icons to their proper honor; this is commemorated on the Sunday of Orthodoxy. He governed the Church of Constantinople for four years, and reposed in 846.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

First Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Matthew 28:16-20

At that time, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. Amen."

First Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 67.35,26.
God is wonderful among his saints.
Verse: Bless God in the congregations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:33-40; 12:1-2.

Brethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

The Sunday of All Saints
The Reading is from Matthew 10:32-33; 37-38; 19:27-30

The Lord said to his disciples, "Every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in heaven. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me." Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first."

The Sunday of All Saints

News and Information

THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 14 IS THE SUNDAY OF ALL SAINTS. “The church is the body of Christ. The church is the place of communion with the Holy Trinity. How we do church, how we minister and serve is at the very heart of our response to celebrating and communicating the gifts that we have received from God.” Read more at http://www.saintanthonyreno.org/

The Apostles Fast begins on Monday, June 15 and continues until the feast day of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul on June 29. You can read more about this season by going to this link: https://myocn.net/what-is-the-fast-of-the-apostles/

Dear Parish Members:  By the grace of God, starting this weekend, we are once again able to welcome you for worship and Divine Liturgy.  Our first open service will be Sunday, June 14th – 9am Orthros; 10am Divine Liturgy.

As we have been sharing, the full restoration of our parish life will be a process and at this first opening of our doors there will be noticeable changes and limitations.  Please be reminded that all these things are being done in love, putting aside our self-interests out of respect and care for our entire parish family and community.  We are working in close coordination with the Metropolis following the guidelines they have provided, along with the regulations of our civil and health authorities.

We are required by state and local regulations to maintain social distancing standards and adhere to capacity limits.  This means we will only be able to accommodate 40 parishioners during Orthros and Divine Liturgy Services at this time. We will adjust this as regulations changes.

For the foreseeable future - all Parishioners must sign up for Sunday services in advance.  For those not able to attend in person, services will continue to be live-streamed on our Facebook page.  Details on how to reserve a seat for services are found below.  Before signing up, please consider the following:

  • Parishioners who are sick or at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are strongly encouraged to refrain from attending services at this time.  This includes those who are 65 or older, have underlying medical conditions, have been exposed to the virus, or are experiencing symptoms of illness. (If you are high-risk with underlying health challenges, you can make a personal appointment with Father Stephen to receive Holy Communion during the week.)
  • All parishioners will be required to adhere to the social distancing and safety guidelines being practiced in our Parish.  For now, this does include masks being worn by all parishioners over the age of 2 while in the church building.
  • We will need to collect the names and contact information for everyone attending services.  This is being done solely for the purposes of contact tracing should we become aware COVID-19 exposure has taken place within church.  God-willing we will not need to use it.
  • We would like you to arrive at church between 9-9:30am!  You will need to check in when you arrive and be ushered to your seats one family at a time.  Your early arrival will help to ensure timely seating and minimize distraction during services.

How to Reserve Your Spot for Sunday Services:

  1. Email the church office on Wednesday only at saintanthonychurch@sbcglobal.net.  Please include your name, the names of those attending with you and a contact phone number for each person (if you do not all live in the same household).
  • Sign-ups will be taken in order according to when emails are received until our capacity is reached.  (The email timestamp will be used as reference.)
  • An exception will be made for our few parishioners who do not have email – they may call the church office to sign up for services (also on Wednesday only).
  1. Confirmation will be sent via email on Thursday to let you know if you have a spot reserved for Sunday.
  • Responses will be sent to everyone who sends a sign-up email so you will know if you are confirmed or not.  If you do not hear back by end of day Thursday, contact the Church Office.
  • For now, we are only taking sign-ups for a week at a time (no future reservations).  If you are not confirmed to attend this week, you will need to sign up again next week.

A few important notes:

  • Signup emails received before Wednesday will not be considered.
  • If you are confirmed to attend service but your plans change – please be sure contact the Church Office as soon as possible if you need to cancel your reservation so your spot can be filled with someone else.
  • It is our desire to give as many people as possible the opportunity to come back to church so for now, parishioners will not be allowed to attend services 2 Sundays in a row.
  • This sign up process applies to Sunday Services only.  You will not need to sign up for services held Monday-Saturday.  These will be handled on a first come/first seated basis until capacity is reached.  (You will be required to sign in when you arrive for contact tracing purposes only.)

Be mindful this is new and not ideal for all of us.  Your patience, flexibility and compassion are appreciated.  We will work to make improvements as we learn through this.

Please look for more detailed information in the coming days on specific expectations and guidelines for attending services.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND COOPERATION and let us all thank God for every blessing.  I look forward to seeing you in church again soon. Fr Stephen

NEW!  Online Giving Portal for Stewardship & Donation Offerings

We have been living through unprecedented and unsettling times however the dedication to our faith and our commitment to sustain, connect and grow our parish has not wavered.  We are starting to reopen our services, we recently brought back live streaming with improved quality, and with this email we are happy to introduce our new Saint Anthony Online Giving Portal.

This provides you the option to offer your stewardship and free-will offerings online via credit card, debit card, or electronic withdrawal from a bank account.  The Online Giving Portal can be accessed through our Church Website by clicking the new “Donations & Stewardship” tab. This functionality is secured for your protection and gives you the opportunity to make a one-time contribution or set up a recurring offering.

Our traditional ways of accepting offerings remain the same – the portal has been added for those who prefer the convenience of online giving.  It also helps to mitigate the risks associated with handling cash.  Our office remains open during weekdays and at services a collection tray will be placed in the Narthex (as a health and safety precaution it will not be passed).

As you consider your offerings, please keep in mind that in accordance with church regulations and bylaws, donations that are specified for a particular use can only be used for that purpose.  In uncertain times like these, general donations give the church more flexibility to adapt to unforeseen challenges.

Also be reminded it is still important to fill out a Stewardship Pledge card each year - this helps us to plan and budget effectively.  If you have not completed your 2020 Stewardship Pledge card, please contact the church office for assistance with this.

It is our intention to expand this new capability as we learn more from our online giving trends in the coming months.  Your suggestions are welcome.

Our prayers remain with you, your families, our community and our world for good health, strength, peace, and resilience now and in the days ahead!

God Bless,

The SAGOC Parish Council http://saintanthonyreno.org/

If you have any questions or trouble using this tool, please contact the Church Office - (775) 825-5365 or saintanthonychurch@sbcglobal.net

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do, says the Lord Almighty, I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe, says the Lord Almighty. Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight, says the Lord Almighty.” –Malachi 3:9-12

Festival Update

The prayers of the Festival Committee for good health and resilience are with our parishioners, our community and our world in these uncertain times.  We have been paying close attention to the safety, health and social distance guidelines as they continue to evolve, leveraging information from both our church hierarchy and civil authorities.

We continue to approach the challenges of this pandemic with optimism and an open-mind, but as time has progressed and more information is known the probable realities for our festival are starting to emerge.  This includes hosting a significantly reduced event, with minimal (if any) ability to allow patrons to gather and possible cancellation.

We understand the weight and implication of such decisions about our festival.  We are meeting on a regular basis to reflect on the guidelines unfolding before us and brainstorming on creative ideas to adapt.  We find inspiration in the leadership of our Metropolis and Archdiocese, keeping faith in God and the safety of parishioners, guests and communities as our top priorities.

Our sights are set on the first week of June to settle on a path forward.  This will give us the opportunity to learn from the outcomes of Phase I, as well as gather more information on the exact guidelines of Phase II, which will be critical for our planning and preparation activities over the summer.  We aim to present a recommended plan to the Parish Council at their June 14th meeting and will provide an update to our entire parish community shortly thereafter.

All ideas, suggestions and questions are welcome and appreciated.  Please email them to Dimi at renogreekfestival@yahoo.com
