Athanasius of Mount Athos

Saint Athanasius had Trebizond for his homeland. He first entered the monastic life on the mountain called Kymaeos or Kyminas, which is in Mysia of Bithynia, then he went to Mount Athos and founded a large monastery, which is known as the Great Lavra. He became so renowned for his virtue that from Rome, Calabria, Georgia, and elsewhere, rulers, men of wealth and nobility, abbots, and even bishops came to him and were subject to him. When the time for his departure was at hand, God revealed to him how it would take place, so that he was able to instruct his spiritual children not to be troubled when it should come to pass. A new church was being built for the sake of the many who came to him, and only the dome had not been finished. Together with six of the brethren, the Saint went to the top of the church to help the workmen. The dome collapsed, and they fell. Five were killed at once, and the Saint died three hours later. His holy body remained incorrupt and he worked many miracles after his death. He reposed about the end of the tenth century.

Uncovering of the Holy Relics of Our Righteous Father Sergius of Radonezh

Our righteous Father Sergius was born in Rostov, north of Moscow, about the year 1314. Named Bartholomew in Baptism, he was brought up in Radonezh, and at the death of his parents he withdrew to the wilderness to become a monk. It is notable that without having been trained in a monastery, he was of such a spiritual stature as to be able to take up the perilous eremitical life from the beginning, without falling into delusion or despondency. When he had endured with courage the deprivations of the solitary life, other monks began to come to him, for whom he was made abbot against his will. On the counsel of Philotheus, Patriarch of Constantinople, he organized his monks according to the cenobitic life, appointing duties to each. While Anthony and Theodosius of Kiev, and the other righteous Fathers before Sergius, had established their monasteries near to cities, Sergius was the leader and light of those who went far into the wilderness, and after his example the untrodden forests of northern Russia were settled with monks. When Grand Duke Demetrius Donskoy was about to go to battle against the invading Tartars, he first sought the blessing of Saint Sergius, through whose prayers he was triumphant. Saint Sergius was adorned with the highest virtues of Christ-like humility and burning love for God and neighbour, and received the gift of working wonders, of casting out demons, and of discretion for leading souls to salvation. When he served the Divine Liturgy, an Angel served with him visibly; he was also vouchsafed the visitation of the most holy Theotokos with the Apostles Peter and John. He was gathered to his Fathers on September 25, 1392. At the recovery of his holy relics on July 5, 1422, his body and garments were found fragrant and incorrupt. His life was written by the monks of Epiphanius, who knew him.

Holy New Martyrs Elizabeth the Grand Duchess and the Novice Barbara

Grand Duchess Elizabeth, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of England and elder sister of Empress Alexandra of Russia (see July 4), was one of the most illustrious women of her day, known throughout Europe not only for her high birth and graceful beauty, but also for her modesty and goodness of heart. After marrying Grand Duke Sergius Alexandrovich, she converted to Orthodoxy, although this was not required of her by her position. After the assassination of her husband in 1905, Grand Duchess Elizabeth withdrew from public life, founding the convent of Saints Martha and Mary, of which she became the superior. There she dedicated herself to prayer, fasting, tending the sick, and caring for the poor. After the Bolsheviks seized power, she was exiled to the Urals, where she and those with her were martyred in 1918 when they were cast alive into an abandoned mine. The Novice Barbara followed Saint Elizabeth into exile. When she was separated from the Grand Duchess, Barbara asked to be allowed to join her again; to terrify her, the Bolsheviks told her that she would be allowed to do this, but only if she were prepared for unheard-of torments and a violent death. To their amazement, she consented, and was deemed worthy of martyrdom with the Grand Duchess. Their holy relics were recovered and taken through Russia to China, and came to rest in the Convent of Saint Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem. When their reliquaries were opened in 1981, their bodies were found to be partially incorrupt, and sweet with the odour of sanctity. With them are also commemorated their fellow Martyrs: Grand Duke Sergius Mikhailovich; Princes John, Constantine, and Igor, the brethren; Prince Vladimir Paley; and Theodore Remez.

Kyprianos the New Martyr of Koutloumousiou Monastery

Cyprian (Kyprianos) was born in the village of Kletzos in the province of Litza and Agrapha in northern Greece, from devout Christian parents. After becoming a monk at a young age he was made worthy of the holy priesthood. Upon being ordained, Father Cyprian went to the Holy Mountain and lived in the Cell of Saint George near Koutloumousiou Monastery. There he cultivated the virtues and became an exemplary monk.
 
Meanwhile, the heart of Cyprian was inflamed for martyrdom. For this reason he left the quietude and calm of his cell and departed for Thessaloniki, where he boldly preached Christ before the judge, urging those present to repudiate Islam and follow the path of Christ. Those present thought him to be a lunatic, so they beat him up and kicked him out of the court.
 
The flame in his heart for martyrdom did not diminish from this, but rather increased. Therefore Cyprian departed for Constantinople where he boldly entered the palace of the Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa, to whom he preached the Christian faith. The Grand Vizier was surprised by the words and boldness of Cyprian, so he in turn tried to persuade him to accept Islam. But he failed. Hence Cyprian was sent to the mufti, to whom he preached the same message of salvation.
 
At a certain point the Grand Vizier lost patience with Cyprian, so he sentenced him to death, and this sentence was gladly accepted by Cyprian. He was beheaded in the Phanar section of Constantinople, the area in which the Ecumenical Patriarchate has been located since 1601.
 
In this way was the deep longing of Cyprian fulfilled, giving his life for the love of Jesus Christ, in imitation of the saints, on Saturday, July 5th, in the year 1679. His martyrdom was recorded by John Karyophyllis.

And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. News and Information

To all our beloved parishioners: Rejoice in the Lord always! [Phil.4:4] 

We have now completed three Sundays of “re-opening” for Divine Liturgy, and I want to express what an incredible joy it is to see you in church again!  Although our attendance is still limited, how beautiful it is to have you present and to see you in church offering your prayers and worship.

We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers.[1Thess. 1:2] 

My hope, of course, is that our full parish life will be restored quickly, however we must continue to be patient. I’m grateful for your understanding and cooperation with our parish Readiness Team and the procedures they have implemented. 

Much thanks goes out to those serving on this Team who have been active and present at church, making sure that everything is safe for the return of our parishioners. Let me express my gratitude to Jim Phillips, Dr. Andreia Pop, Sophia McCutcheon, Maria Borrego, Eric DoBroka and Dimi Sakelarios, who have been vital in organizing and coordinating our parish life. 

Much appreciation goes out also to our Festival Committee that continues to meet to evaluate our evolving circumstances and creatively consider all possible options and opportunities that lie before us. 

Keeping up with all the public health guidelines and Metropolis directives, then adapting our Church life & Festival plans to our current situation is complicated and we are so grateful for the time and effort of our dedicated parishioners. 

Facing these uncertain times together, let us all continue to look forward steadfastly in faith, hope and love, trusting the Lord and grateful for everything. Yes, everything: both for the good we experience as well as the challenges we face!

Reminders & Guideline Adjustments

You do not need to sign up for services held Monday-Saturday. These are open on a first-come first-seated basis until capacity is reached.
 
Please do not congregate in the Narthex or Small Hall after church.
 
We all miss seeing each other and it is natural to want to visit, but for the health and safety of all it is important that we continue to move outside after services and maintain social distancing standards.
 
In accordance with the Governor’s recent new directive on face coverings we have slightly altered our mask policy as follows:
 
o  Face masks/coverings are required for everyone 10 years of age and older. 
o  Children ages 2-9 are strongly encouraged to wear a mask/covering. 
o  Masks/coverings are prohibited for children under age 2. 
o  Any exceptions will be in accordance with the guidelines of the state directive. More information can be found on the Nevada Health Response Website

Live Streaming

All scheduled services are being live-streamed on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/saintanthonychurchreno/.We have seen great improvement with the quality of our streaming, but we are still learning.  We now have someone at church monitoring the live-streaming and correcting issues as they arise.  If your video freezes or disconnects, please refresh your screen.  Sometimes you will need to look for a new post to pick up on services where they cut out.  Thank you for your continued patience and support as we learn and grow with this capability.  It is a blessing to be able to connect with those at home in this way.

Parishioners who are sick or at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are strongly encouraged to refrain from attending services at this time.  This includes those who are 65 or older, have underlying medical conditions, have been exposed to the virus, or are experiencing symptoms of illness. (If you are high-risk with underlying health challenges, you can make a personal appointment with Father Stephen to receive Holy Communion during the week.)

Online Giving Portal for Stewardship & Donation Offerings 

The Online Giving Portal can be accessed through our Church Website by clicking the new “Donations & Stewardship” tab. This functionality is secured for your protection and gives you the opportunity to make a one-time contribution or set up a recurring offering. 

Our traditional ways of accepting offerings remain the same – the portal has been added for those who prefer the convenience of online giving.  It also helps to mitigate the risks associated with handling cash.  Our office remains open during weekdays and at services a collection tray will be placed in the Narthex (as a health and safety precaution it will not be passed).

Festival Update – July 2020  

The festival committee continues to meet regularly and is closely monitoring the safety, health and social distancing guidelines unfolding before us.  As the course of this pandemic and its impact has evolved, the realities for our festival are becoming clearer – we are now working with the expectation of a significantly reduced event and possible cancellation.    
We understand the weight and implication of such decisions about our festival.  We find inspiration in the leadership of our Parish, Metropolis and Archdiocese, keeping faith in God and the safety of parishioners, guests and communities as our top concern.    
At the beginning of June, and with the blessing of the Parish Council, we made the decision to narrow our focus to exploring the feasibility of a To Go Only variation of our festival.  We are not yet sure if this will be an economically viable option for us but do believe it to be the most realistic approach we can take.    
Since our decision we have seen the Nugget’s Rib Cook-Off cancel (Labor Day wknd) and the Governor announce mandatory face coverings, as well as a pause of plans to move into Phase III.  This isn’t a deterrent to our analysis of the To-Go Only option, but it does reinforce the restrictions we will likely be working under through our preparation months and into festival weekend.  
We have met with other festival planners throughout the Metropolis and know all parishes are faced with very similar challenges.  Most have also narrowed on a To Go only approach or have made the difficult decision to cancel their festival.  Many creative ideas have been shared that we will consider as we contemplate our options.  We will also be reaching out to our parishioners in the coming days for input.

Metropolis Music News

Dear Reverend Fathers and Parish Music Directors: Something new has been added!  With the summer has come the expansion of our range of instructional church music videos to include a series to build the music literacy skills of both youth and adults.  In this delightful video, our team member, Katerina Lynch of Saint Anthony’s, Pasadena, introduces the importance, nature, and beauty of music in human experience and the Church.  This video can be used by families and individuals to underscore the joy of understanding and knowing the basics of music.  Its simple format makes it ideal for music directors or Sunday school teachers to reach out to adults and kids over the summer to remind them of the important role of music in their lives and the life of the church.  It’s a good “connector” to add to e-mails or the church website, and we invite you to share as widely as you like.
