Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Sunday after Holy Cross

When, my beloved, your Christian life begins to become difficult and it seems like your cross is unbearable, remain steadfast, become a martyr. Say to yourself, "Let us stand aright," remain steadfast. Say, like the Prophet, "Behold, Lord, I stand here to execute Your will," or like the Panagia, "Behold, the servant of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your word." If you will endure, then after the storm will come the calm, and your life will again become festive. Now you will also have additional insight into the spiritual struggle, you will have experience. After this trial, after you have lifted up your cross, there will light up within you the flame of divine eros. You will acquire the most beautiful, the most strong, the most pure and the most angelic love, the love of God.

Trophimus, Sabbatius, & Dorymedon the Martyrs

In 278, during the reign of Probus, Saints Trophimus and Sabbatius came to Antioch, and seeing the city celebrating the festival of Apollo at Daphne lamented the blindness of the people, and presented themselves as Christians to Atticus the Governor. Saint Trophimus was stripped of his clothing, and was stretched out and beaten until the earth was red with his blood. Then he was hung up, scraped on his sides, and imprisoned in torments. Saint Sabbatius was tortured so savagely that he gave up his spirit in his sufferings. Trophimus was sent to Synnada, wearing iron shoes fitted with sharp iron nails within; he was further tormented without mercy, then cast into prison. Dorymedon, a counsellor, and a pagan, came to the prison and cared for Trophimus. When a certain feast came, Dorymedon was asked why he did not sacrifice to the idols; he proclaimed himself a Christian, for which he was imprisoned, pierced with heated spits, frightfully punished, and finally beheaded with Saint Trophimus.

Theodore of Tarsus, Archbishop of Canterbury

Saint Theodore was the eighth Archbishop of Canterbury (668-690), and one of England’s great saints. He was a Greek from Tarsus, the home of Saint Paul. He was a highly-educated monk living in Rome who was quickly advanced through all the clerical ranks and consecrated as Archbishop of Canterbury at the age of sixty-five. Saint Adrian (January 9), an African who was the abbot of a monastery near Naples, was sent to assist Saint Theodore.

Saint Theodore arrived in Kent in 669, when he was almost seventy. In spite of his age, he was quite energetic, traveling throughout England founding churches and consecrating bishops to fill those Sees which were left vacant by an outbreak of plague. He also created new Sees and established a school in Canterbury where Greek was taught.

In Northumbria, Saint Theodore settled a dispute involving episcopal succession. Saint Wilfrid (October 12) had been elected Bishop of Lindisfarne (the See was later transferred to York), and he traveled to Gaul to be consecrated by a Roman bishop, because he would not accept consecration from a Celtic bishop. In the meantime, Saint Chad, or Ceadda (March 2), had been elected and uncanonically consecrated because Wilfrid remained in Gaul for three years. Although Saint Theodore deposed Saint Chad, he recognized his worthiness to be a bishop. He regularized the consecration, then sent Saint Chad to be Bishop of Mercia. Saint Wilfred was restored to his See.

Saint Theodore summoned a council of the entire English Church at Hertford in 672. Not only was this the first church council in England, it was the first assembly of any kind attended by representatives from all over the country. In 679 he convened another synod at Hatfield to maintain the purity of Orthodox doctrine and to condemn the heresy of Monothelitism.

Saint Theodore fell asleep in the Lord in 690, and his body remained incorrupt for a long time. Under his leadership, the English Church became united in a way that the various tribal kingdoms did not. The diocesean structures which he established continue to serve as the basis for church administration in England. He was respected for his administrative skills, and also for his moral and canonical decisions.

Plato the new Hieromartyr of Patmos

Hieromartyr Plato (Aivazidis) was protosingelos of Metropolitan Germanos Karavangelis of Kastoria. He was born on the holy island of Patmos, where there has already been a church dedicated to his memory for some time. He was hanged by the Turks on September 21, 1921.

Thank You for Your Support of our September Food to Go Event! To all our volunteers that helped with prep & filling orders during the event, and to all who ordered food, thank you for your support! We are grateful for your participation. Through the generosity of many, we are able to help TWO very important charities:

●All tips collected, in the amount of $2870, will be donated to Awaken, a local faith-based non-profit organization whose mission is to increase awareness and education surrounding the issue of commercial sexual exploitation and to provide housing and restoration for its victims.

●Additionally, one dollar from all Gyro & Baklava sales, plus additional donations received in the amount of $1270, will be donated to the Catholic Charities 2021 Fire Relief Fund supporting the work they are doing to aid those impacted by local fires.

Adult Education: Orthodox Christianity Beginning on Thursday, September 23rd, a series of evening classes on Orthodox Christianity will be held at 7pm (see the scheduled dates in our monthly newsletter). These classes are for everyone wishing to learn more about the Orthodox Faith; and are required for those who wish to become Orthodox. Each class will include a talk and time for discussion and questions. Classes will be held at church in the small hall and simultaneously via Zoom. This way, you can join us in-person or online at the scheduled time of the class.

Adult Education: Chanters and Singers LITURGICS COURSE BEGINS SEPTEMBER 29 and covers the basic structure, content, and theology of the liturgical services of the Orthodox Church, focusing on the central daily liturgical cycle of Divine Liturgy, Vespers, and Matins (Orthros). Classes will be offered on Wednesday evenings via Zoom. There is NO cost for this course. You can Click here to register

Sign Up to Join Our Welcome & Hospitality Ministry! Coffee fellowship is held each Sunday after Liturgy. It serves to bring adults and children together in Orthodox Christian Fellowship and love, creating greater communion and stronger ties through interaction with fellow Orthodox Christians. It is vital that we strengthen our relationship by spending time with one another after service, talking, encouraging, and being there for one another. If you have not yet joined us for coffee fellowship, please plan on attending soon! You can help with the Sunday coffee fellowship in one or more of the following ways:

Bring sweet food items to share (pastries, cookies, cakes, donuts, fruit, etc.).
Bring savory food items to share (cheese, crackers, salads, vegetables, etc.).
Bring kids' snacks (Goldfish, fruit snacks, juice, etc.).
Setup before Liturgy.
Cleanup after fellowship.
Host an entire fellowship with various items.

Fellowship sign-up sheets are in the large hall. Participants are asked to bring enough to serve 50-75 people and to have items in the kitchen before 10 a.m. Serving trays and utensils are available.

Remember that the mission of our Church is to bring people to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18) To fulfil this mission we must all have the commitment and conviction to live the life in Christ not just as an individual but also within the community.
