Arethas the Great Martyr

The Martyr Arethas and with him 4299 Martyrs suffered for the Lord Jesus Christ in the sixth century. Arethas was prefect of the Christian city of Negran in Arabia. The Arabian (or Omirite) king, Dunaan, who was Jewish, decided to eliminate Christianity from the land. He issued an edict that all followers of Christ were to be put to death.

Because the inhabitants of Negran remained faithful to the Lord, Dunaan came with a large army to destroy the city. At the city walls of Negran the king’s heralds announced that Dunaan would only spare those who renounced Christ and referred to His Cross as a “sign of malediction.”

Not daring to assault the Christian city by force, Dunaan resorted to a ruse. Dunaan swore an oath that he would not force the Christians into Judaism, but would merely collect a tribute from Negran. The inhabitants of the city would not heed the advice of Saint Arethas, and putting their trust in Dunaan, they opened the city gates.

The very next day Dunaan gave orders to light an immense fire and throw all the clergy of the city into it in order to frighten the rest of the Christians. 427 men were burned. He also threw the prefect Arethas and the other chief men into prison. Then the oppressor sent his messengers through the city to convert the Christians to Judaism. Dunaan himself conversed with those inhabitants brought from the prisons, saying, “I do not demand that you should renounce the God of heaven and earth, nor do I want you to worship idols, I want merely that you do not believe in Jesus Christ, since the Crucified One was a man, and not God.”

The holy martyrs replied that Jesus is God the Word, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, Who for the salvation of mankind was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. Those suffering said, “We shall not abjure Christ, since He is Life for us. To die for Him is to find Life.”

More than four thousand Christians, men, women, both the aged and children, from the city of Negran and surrounding villages suffered martyrdom for Christ.

Sebastiane the Martyr

Sebastiane (Sebastiana, Sevestiane, Sebastiani) lived and struggled in Marcianopolis (modern-day Devnya, Bulgaria), during the reign of Emperor Domitian (81-96). Having been baptized by the Apostle Paul, in the year 81 she continued to proclaim the good news of Christ. Due to her missionary work as a Christian, she was slandered before Governor Sergius. Therefore, she was made to give an accounting before him. She boldly confessed that she believed in Christ and that she was taught and received baptism by the Apostle Paul. She also added that she was prepared to die for Christ.

At first, they beat her body with lead balls, and then flung her into prison. In that dungeon, the Apostle Paul appeared to her, and said, "Rejoice and sorrow not, for you will go bound to your own homeland on behalf of the confession of Christ!"

After seven days, the governor removed her from prison for further torture. He lit a furnace and commanded that she be cast within the flames. Sebastiane remained ample hours within the furnace. When she exited unscathed, all marveled and were amazed. After the Martyr uttered a prayer, she heard a dreadful noise from heaven, with thunder and lightning. Hailstone mightily fell and pelted the furnace, extinguishing the fire. By the shower of hail, many were in danger of dying. The governor, frightened, then departed with his retinue.

Later the governor remarked to Sebastiane, "Who are you? What is your purpose? And from what land do you hail?" The Martyr fell silent. The governor then learned from the bystanders that she was from Heraclea, a city of Thrace. After he had her bound, he remanded her to the governor of that area. Then an Angel of the Lord appeared to her, saying, "Take courage, O daughter, though you will stand before the governor, I shall be with you."

At length, the holy Sebastiane arrived in Heraclea and appeared before the governor. He sentenced her to be hoisted high upon wood that resembled the block of a pulley. After they rent asunder her body for three hours, the torn flesh of the Saint yielded a fragrant myrrh. All the while, as Sebastiane remained silent and in prayer, all remarked than an animated soul and living body did not suffer, but one without senses.

When they lowered her from the wheel and axle, they cast her as prey to wild animals. A great lion approached the holy woman which, by divine command took on a human voice. The wild beast then praised and blessed Christ's Martyr, but censured and condemned the impious and lawless. A lioness then drew near and stood to the other side of the Martyr. Thus, both lions stood to Sebastiane's right and left, as innocent lambs.

The governor was sore amazed at this spectacle and was at a loss at how to proceed. Therefore, he sentenced the Martyr to die by decapitation outside of the city.

Thus, Saint Sebastiane was beheaded and - O the wonder! - instead of blood flowing from the wound, milk gushed forth, just like her teacher Saint Paul. The profane governor then commanded that her honorable head be placed in a sack with three hundred pounds of lead and cast into the sea. This being done, an Angel of the Lord tore open the sack and bore the honorable head and relic to a place called Resistos (or Rhaidestos, city on the north shore of the Sea of Marmara). This was revealed to a senator's wife, named Ammia, who took up the august relics and wrapped them with linen and anointed them with myrrh. The relics were then interred in a special place at Resistos, to the glory of God.

Martyr Syncletica and her two daughters

The Martyr Syncletica and her two daughters suffered under the Arabian king Dunaan. Saint Syncletica was a descendant of an illustrious family. Left widowed while still quite young, she devoted herself to the Christian upbringing of her daughters, and she herself led a life both chaste and virtuous.Dunaan in the meantime had begun a persecution, intending to eliminate Christians from his realm. He summoned Saint Syncletica and her daughters before him, and in urging her to forsake her “folly,” he promised as reward to take her into the retinue of his wife.“How can you not be afraid, O King, to speak evil of Him Who has given you both royal crown and life?” replied the holy martyr.Dunaan gave orders to lead Saint Syncletica and her daughters through the city as though they were criminals. Women, looking on at the disgrace of the saint, started crying, but she told them that this “shame” for her was dearer than any earthly honor.Again they brought the martyr before Dunaan, and he said, “If you wish to remain alive, you must renounce Christ.”“If I do, then who will deliver me from eternal death?” the saint asked. In a rage, the tormentor ordered that Saint Syncletica’s daughters be killed first, and then for the mother to be beheaded with a sword.

Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. Sunday School resumes for all students ages K-12. Pre-enrollment is not required. Our Sunday School team will offer grade-level engaging Orthodox activities to help students grow in the Faith through project-based and service learning. You can access a student enrollment form at our website or through our electronic weekly bulletin.

●Note to Students: You will be directed to Sunday School in the Small Hall following Holy Communion. Classes will be in session for 40 minutes and then you will be released into the Large Hall for snacks and fellowship.

●Note to Parishioners: Following dismissal today, please enter the Big Hall for Fellowship from the outside. Do not go through the small hall as Sunday School will be in progress.

As an expression of love and hope to our departed non-Orthodox, we will also offer a Trisagion prayer at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Stewardship Town Hall – Planned Giving The Metropolis Stewardship Ministry is offering a presentation by Rev. Father James Kordaris on the topic of “Establishing a Planned Giving Program in Your Parish” on Monday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. PDT via Zoom. Father Jim will speak on the importance of encouraging planned giving and the establishment of a planned giving program. Additional presentations will be offered by Development professionals Maria Pappas and Bill Navrides, both of whom will share knowledge from their vast experiences. Register today!

OrthoTalks for Jr. High/Middle School Students and Parents Join Father Gary Kyriacou along with members of the Metropolis Family Wellness Ministry team for an in-depth Zoom gathering on the Orthodox Christian response to bullying, how to deal with someone that is mean, and understanding brokenness. This series will aid the student’s social development by reinforcing the teachings of our Lord and His Church. If you are a Middle/Junior High School Student, we invite you and your parents to join us!
