Judgment Sunday (Meatfare Sunday)

The foregoing two parables -- especially that of the Prodigal Son -- have presented to us God's extreme goodness and love for man. But lest certain persons, putting their confidence in this alone, live carelessly, squandering upon sin the time given them to work out their salvation, and death suddenly snatch them away, the most divine Fathers have appointed this day's feast commemorating Christ's impartial Second Coming, through which we bring to mind that God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge, Who recompenses to each according to his deeds.

It is the aim of the holy Fathers, through bringing to mind that fearful day, to rouse us from the slumber of carelessness unto the work of virtue, and to move us to love and compassion for our brethren. Besides this, even as on the coming Sunday of Cheese-fare we commemorate Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight -- which exile is the beginning of life as we know it now -- it is clear that today's is reckoned the last of all feasts, because on the last day of judgment, truly, everything of this world will come to an end.

All foods, except meat and meat products, are allowed during the week that follows this Sunday.

Quadratus the Martyr & his Companions

During a persecution against Christians (in the third century) a certain pious woman named Rufina fled from Corinth to a mountain, to escape from her pursuers. There she gave birth to a son Quadratus, and died soon afterward. By the Providence of God the infant remained alive and was nourished in miraculous manner: a cloud appeared over him, dropping a sweet dew into his mouth.

The childhood and youth of Saint Quadratus were spent in the wilderness. When he was a young man, he chanced upon Christians, who enlightened him with the light of the true Faith. Quadratus studied grammar, and later learned the physician’s art and attained great success in it. But most of all, Quadratus loved the wilderness solitude and he spent the greater part of his time in the hills, in prayer and meditation upon God. Many years passed, and his friends and followers frequently came to the saint to hear his instruction. Among them were Cyprian, Dionysius, Anectus, Paul, Crescens and many others.

By order of the impious emperor Decius (249-251), the military prefect Jason arrived at Corinth to torture and slay Christians. Since Quadratus was the eldest, he spoke for the rest. The saint bravely defended his faith in Christ the Savior, then they began the torture. Saint Quadratus, despite inhuman suffering, encouraged the others, urging them not to be afraid and to stand firmly for the Faith.

Unable to persuade any of them to deny Christ, Jason ordered the martyrs to be thrown to wild beasts to be torn apart. But the beasts did not touch them. They tied the saints to chariots by their feet and dragged them through the city, and many of the crowd threw stones at them. Finally, they condemned the martyrs to beheading by the sword. At the place of execution the martyrs requested for a certain time to pray, and then one after the other they bent their necks beneath the sword.

The remaining disciples of Saint Quadratus also suffered for Christ: Dionysius (another one) was stabbed in the night; Victorinus, Victor and Nikēphóros were crushed in a large stone press; Claudius’s hands and feet were cut off; Diodorus was thrown into a fire prepared for him; Serapion was decapitated; Papias and Leonidas were drowned in the sea. Many holy women also went voluntarily to suffer for Christ: Saints Chariessa, Nunechia, Basilissa, Nike, Galla, Galina, and Theodora were among them.

St John Khakhuli

In the second half of the 10th century King Davit Kuropalates founded Khakhuli Monastery in the historical region of Tao, at the gorge of the Khakhuli River, where it joins the Tortumi River.

Once famed for its holiness and academic activity, today Khakhuli Monastery is a Turkish possession and has become a tourist site. Nevertheless, the Georgian nation continues to be illumined by its grace and the radiance of the Georgian faithful who labored there.

A contemporary of King Bagrat III (975-1014), Saint John of Khakhuli was a highly educated theologian, translator, and calligrapher. He has been called “Chrysostom” since he, like the beloved archbishop of Constantinople, delivered his sermons with extraordinary eloquence.

Some sources claim that Saint John was first consecrated bishop of Bolnisi and later transferred to the Khakhuli diocese. It is generally agreed, however, that he left Khakhuli around the year 1019 and traveled to Mt. Athos with Arsen of Ninotsminda and John Grdzelisdze.

One Georgian manuscript, however, suggests that Saint John was not a bishop at that time, and this has baffled Church historians to this day. In this manuscript it is written: “Pray for the blessed monk John Grdzelisdze and his spiritual son John Chrysostom, who labored to write this holy book.”

While laboring on Mt. Athos, Saint John faithfully assisted Saint Ekvtime of the Holy Mountain, and these spiritual brothers became close friends.

The countless good works he performed from the bishop’s throne, the title “Chrysostom,” and the many important writings accredited to him attest to the piety, wisdom, and patriotism of Saint John of Khakhuli. It is written in The Life of Giorgi of the Holy Mountain that Saint John reposed on Mt. Athos.

Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying and the napkin, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall.

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' The Liturgical Arts Academy 2024 trains those who want to learn Byzantine chant or iconography in the tradition of the Orthodox Christian Church. The Academy is a one-week intensive program in late August led by expert teachers. August 18th to the 24th. REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 20. This is an amazing opportunity to grow in the faith. Ancient Faith's Lampstand Institute - What is it? Ancient Faith’s Lampstand Institute is an introductory media training forum for Orthodox Christians aged 18-23 who are interested in learning skills in digital media and applying them to the service of the Church.  When? July 18-21, 2024. Programming will begin Thursday, July 18, at 6:30 pm and conclude with Divine Liturgy and lunch on Sunday morning. If flying into a Chicago airport, our staff will be in touch about best flight times to align with a shuttle to Chesterton. If traveling another way, arriving in Chesterton by 6:00 pm is best. Who is eligible to apply? Orthodox Christians from ages 18-23 are eligible to apply. You do not need to be enrolled in related coursework, have experience in media, or be employed in media to be considered. The event aims to teach essential skills and provide mentorship for young people interested in digital media and ministry, so we welcome a spectrum of experience and skill levels. Deadline: March 31st, 2024 at 11:59 CT. For questions, email Ellie Bernasol, Director of Marketing and Communications, at ellie@ancientfaith.com. 

Orthodoxy Class meets Thursday evenings at 7p. These classes are for everyone wishing to learn more about the Orthodox Faith; and are recommended for those who wish to become Orthodox. Each class will have preparation material assigned beforehand so you can be ready to attend an interactive class discussion. Reading the Epistle at Divine Liturgy is a very important way to participate in our Sunday service. Won't you consider being an Epistle Reader? We are currently putting together a schedule, so if you would like to participate please talk to Larry Fitterer and tell him your interested in reading. Be sure to check out our Bookstore  Did you know that the bookstore has a self-checkout system when there is no cashier available? Located in front of our register, there are envelopes and a secure box to record and place bookstore payments. Simply choose your item(s), record the item(s) on the envelope, place your payment in the envelope (cash or checks only), and place the envelope into the slot at the top of the secure box. 

Experience Orthodox and Gospel Music Together Our friends at Cappella Romana are offering their recent concert online for you. “How Sweet the Sound: Black Voices in Orthodox Music” features selections from the "Jubilee Divine Liturgy" based on spirituals by Abbess Katherine and Greek Orthodox Vespers infused with Gospel and Jazz by Shawn Wallace. You'll hear "O Gladsome Light" (Phos hilaron) and Psalm 103 chanted as you've never heard them: accompanied by Hammond B3 organ in Gospel style.  This very moving concert is available until the end of October, with video samples and interviews, at cappellaromana.org/sweetsound

Help us build up the Following Ministries:
  • Live Stream— Looking to add additional members to help support our service schedule. This is a great opportunity for our High School and Young Adult parishioners and only requires a commitment of a few hours per month! 
  • Narthex Greeters- Especially on Sunday mornings, help greet and welcome our guests to services. Currently, we have four teams that alternate each week, we are looking to add one more team. Talk to Jim Phillips if you can help us.
  • Hospitality— Looking for a Leader or Co-Leaders to help oversee weekly fellowship: to ensure we have good coverage each week, our supplies are maintained and reordered when needed, and to be a central point of contact for volunteers who have signed up to help and/or contribute. 
  • Facilities — Looking to build a team of parishioners who are willing to help with small projects in and around the church property. If you are interested in joining these or any other ministries, please talk to Father Stephen or contact the church office!

The Metropolis Family Wellness Ministry just completed the 2023 REAL LIFE - Parenting from the Heart 2023 series - receiving much positive feedback. Prayer Ministry “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” James 5:16 If you need prayer for yourself, a family member, or anyone else in your circle of friends and acquaintances, you can have your prayer requests included in a weekly prayer request list. Also, this new Prayer Ministry is looking for “prayer warriors” who are willing to pray for others in need. Praying for one another is a critical part of living an Orthodox Christian life, and the Prayer Ministry can help you systematically pray for others who need prayer. Prayer Ministry “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” James 5:16

  • Paraklesis on Wednesday Evenings: In this service we offer hymns and prayers to Christ and His Mother. If you need prayer for yourself, a family member, or friend, please list the names (first names only) on paper with the heading "For Paraklesis", leave in the tray in the narthex and we will read the names at each service for 40 days.
  • Divine Liturgy every Sunday: During the Proskomidi, or service of preparation, we remember the names of the living and departed, especially all those belonging to our parish. If you would like to submit a list of names to be remembered at this time, please list the names of the living (first names only), and also the departed (first names only), on paper with the heading "For Divine Liturgy." Give your list of names to Father or leave it in the tray in the narthex and we will commemorate your living and departed at Liturgy for 40 days. 
  • Prayer Team: If you need prayer for yourself, a family member, or anyone else in your circle of friends and acquaintances, you can have your prayer requests included in a weekly prayer request list. This Prayer Ministry is looking for “prayer warriors” who are willing to pray for others in need.     This order was given to St. Pachomius of Egypt by an Angel and was the rule he used at each hour of the day and night (ARCHIMANDRITE LAZARUS (MOORE), ST. SERAPHIM OF SAROV: A SPIRITUAL BIOGRAPHY, P. 77). It is a prayer rule that lends itself to memorization, and as such is one that can be done in situations in which it is impractical for one to pray using a prayer book.
