Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

You have given us the miracles of Your holy Martyrs as an impregnable fortress, O Christ our God. At their entreaties, frustrate the plots of foreign enemies, and strengthen our nation, for You alone are good and love humanity.
Τὰ θαύµατα τῶν ἁγίων σου Μαρτύρων, τεῖχος ἀκαταµάχητον, ἡµῖν δωρησάµενος, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, ταῖς αὐτῶν ἱκεσίαις, βουλὰς ἐθνῶν διασκέδασον, τῆς Βασιλείας τὰ σκῆπτρα κραταίωσον, ὡς µόνος ἀγαθὸς καὶ φιλάνθρωπος.

Let us honor Holy Barbara; for she broke the snares of the enemy, and by her sanctity escaped from them like a bird, by the help and defense of the cross.

Apolytikion of Hieromartyr Haralambos in the Fourth Tone

O wise Haralambos, you were proven an unshakable pillar of the Church of Christ; an ever-shining lamp of the universe. You shone in the world by your martyrdom. You delivered us from the moonless night of idolatry O blessed one. Wherefore, boldly intercede to Christ that we may be saved.
Ως στύλος ακλόνητος, της Εκκλησίας Χριστού, και λύχνος αείφωτος, της οικουμένης σοφέ, εδείχθης Χαράλαμπες, έλαμψας εν τω κόσμω, δια του μαρτυρίου, έλυσας και ειδώλων την σκοτόμαιναν μάκαρ, διο εν παρρησία Χριστώ πρέσβευε σωθήναι ημάς.

Nativity Fast Begins

The Nativity Fast is one of four main fast periods throughout the ecclesiastical year. Beginning on November 15 and concluding on December 24, the Nativity Fast gives individuals the opportunity to prepare for the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior in the Flesh on December 25. By abstaining from certain food and drink, particularly from meat, fish, dairy products, olive oil, and wine, as well as focusing more deeply on prayer and almsgiving, we can find that the primary aim of fasting is to make us conscious of our dependence upon God.

Guria, Shamuna, and Habib, Martyrs and Confessors of Edessa

Of these most illustrious Martyrs of the city of Edessa in Syria, Guria and Shamuna contested during the reign of Diocletian, in 288; after many tortures, they were cast into prison, then beheaded. Saint Habib, a deacon, contested in the days of Licinius, in the year 316, and was burned alive; he was buried with Saints Guria and Shamuna. The three have one common feast, and it is always together that they are portrayed in icons and invoked by the faithful. On account of a renowned miracle they worked, they are invoked for help in marital difficulties. A certain Goth had come with the Roman army to Edessa and was quartered in the house of a pious widow named Sophia. The Goth asked Sophia for the hand of her daughter, Euphemia; after resisting for a long time, Sophia at last agreed. When it was time for the army to return home, Sophia made the Goth vow by the power in the holy Martyrs Shamuna, Guria, and Habib, to keep Euphemia as the apple of his eye. As he was nearing his home, however, the treacherous man revealed to Euphemia that he already had a wife. Euphemia was compelled to serve the Goths wife, who dealt with her mercilessly. After extreme sufferings, which included being sealed alive in a tomb and left there to die, Euphemia was miraculously conveyed to Edessa, to the very shrine of the holy Martyrs whose surety they had taken, and was reunited with her mother through their holy prayers.

Holy Unction

“For we have gathered here today in Your sanctuary to anoint with oil of Holy Unction Your servants who are sick, O Lord”.

On Sunday November 15, the beginning of the Nativity Fast,  the Holy Sacrament of Holy Unction will be offered following The Divine Liturgy. The service of the blessing of the Holy Oil took place Holy Wednesday this past Holy Week. This oil will now be offered to the parish.  Everyone participating will be anointed with a new q- tip, in keeping with all CDC rules and regulations. 
It is very important that everyone who plans on attending Liturgy in order to be annointed MUST REGISTER ahead of time on the Eventbrite. There will be additional seating inside the hall for those who do not register.

November 16, 1929, this year we are celebrating our 91st year anniversary. As we continue our philanthropic efforts throughout the years we would like you to go onto the church website and visit our page. There you will see the many hours, days, weeks and years our chapter here at St. Barbara has worked so diligently in supporting many functions from local to international civic, education, senior housing, and so much more. 
As we continue the good work of our founder Alexandra Apostolides we encourage you to visit our national to see how one woman’s dream became a reality. By seeing our website we hope this would encourage you to become a member of our chapter and be a part of our continued success. The DOP mail box has applications if you are interested in becoming part of the oldest Greek Christian organization. 
Today as every year we share this day in honoring our veterans who have kept us safe without regard for their own life’s. We thank you.

Vasilopita

Philoptochos will be selling the large Vasilopites from the Monastary of Agia Skepe with the coin in them for 2021.  The cost will be $20 each.
 
Please place your orders for them starting now until December 5th to be assured that your order will be filled. When we run out we will not be able to replenish them.
 
You will be able to pick them up on three consecutive Sundays , December 13th , 20th and 27th in the Church Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:4-10.

Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Archiepiscopal Encyclical: Inaugural National Philoptochos Sunday

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros has declared this Sunday to be the Inaugural National Philoptochos Sunday, to celebrate the rich legacy of this important organization of our Archdiocese. National Philoptochos Sunday will be celebrated every year to honor the thousands of women throughout our Archdiocese who are a part of this vibrant ministry.
