Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

The Lord said this parable, "There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?'"

UPCOMING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES:

Although the church has reopened for services, no group meetings or activities, including Sunday School, Choir, Events at the Hellenic Cultural Center, etc. will be held until further notice.

FAMILY SUNDAY/SOLES-4-SOULS: Please plan to attend church with your family on Sunday, September 20^th for our first “Family Sunday” service. Since we aren’t able to have regular Sunday School right now, one Sunday each month will be designated as a “Family Sunday” with a special theme, children’s sermon, and activity. The theme for September 20^th is “Walk in Another Person’s shoes”.

On that Sunday, please bring in new or gently used shoes to be donated to the Soles-4-Souls non-profit, which distributes them to homeless children and adults across the United States.

COLLEGE ADDRESSES NEEDED: Our Mom’s group will be sending out “care packages” filled with supplies, goodies and gift cards perfect for our college students - on campus or at home! VOLUNTEER USHERS NEEDED: With all the extra COVID procedures necessary for the church (taking temps, usher to seats, communion, bulletins, etc.) we need some extra support in the Narthex. We need men and women who are healthy, on the younger side, and able to get to church by 9:00 am. FEED THE NEEDY: There are giving envelopes available at the Pangari and in the church office for the Men’s Club John Koinis “Feed the Needy” program, providing Thanksgiving dinners to low-income family homes in Westland and Livonia.

HAPPY (ECCLESIASTICAL) NEW YEAR! On September 1st, the Orthodox Church commemorated the Beginning of the Indiction, that is, the Ecclesiastical New Year. The word Indiction comes from the Latin word meaning to proclaim. It was the month of September when St. Constantine, through the power of the Holy Cross, defeated Maxentius and granted Christians freedom of confession. The Biblical-based traditions and Church customs regarding the Ecclesiastical New Year continue to be honored, especially by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Each year, on September 1st, members of the Holy and Sacred Synod, led by the Ecumenical Patriarch, His All-Holiness, Bartholomew, gather at the Patriarchal Church of St. George the Great Martyr in the Phanar to celebrate the Divine Liturgy and proclaim the New Year. More recently, the entire Orthodox Church, led by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, has declared September 1st as a day of prayer for the preservation of God’s creation and the protection of the natural environment.

Memorial service information

Please call the church office to schedule memorials in a timely manner so we can include the information in the bulletin. If you need someone to make koliva for your service, the office can give you that information. On the day of the memorial, please bring a list of names of the deceased that you would like Father to remember in prayer, and give your list to one of the ushers in the Narthex when you arrive.

At this time, due to COVID restrictions, koliva that has been prepared for the memorial service cannot be distributed to parishioners, but will be returned to the family to take home. We are not currently allowed to have coffee hour, or distribute any cookies, paximadia or koulourakia.

HELLENIC CULTURAL CENTER: The Hellenic Cultural Center is not yet able to hold events, but they are booking events for the year-end, and 2021. If you need to discuss future bookings or other issues with the HCC staff, please contact Kathy at 313.303.6350 or kathysmcmullen@yahoo.com

Non-Orthodox Visitors Please Note: Holy Communion is offered to Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared themselves. Visitors are welcome to receive the Antidoron (Blessed Bread), which is distributed at the end of the Divine Liturgy.
