Sunday of Orthodoxy

For more than one hundred years the Church of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil belief, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian (717-741) and ending in the reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theophilus's death, his widow the Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11), together with the Patriarch Methodius (June 14), established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Methodius and the other confessors and righteous men, and openly cried out these holy words: "If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icons, not adoring them as though they were gods, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype, let him be anathema." Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast, she asked God's forgiveness for her husband. After this, on the first Sunday of the Fast, she and her son, Michael the Emperor, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we the Orthodox commemorate today, and we call this radiant and venerable day the Sunday of Orthodoxy, that is, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, 32-40.

Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

GOYA MEETING: There will be a GOYA meeting TODAY, Sunday March 13th after church in the Board Room. All young people, ages 12 – 18 are encouraged to participate.

PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY/ICONOGRAPHY/POT LUCK SUPPERS: Each Wednesday evening during Lent, following the 5:30pm Presanctified Liturgy service, Father Teodor will have a short presentation on our new iconography and its symbolism. Following the presentation, please join us for a complimentary Lenten Pot-Luck Supper in the HCC. Bring a Lenten dish to pass if you can!

March 16 – Icons of St. John the Baptist, Sts. Constantine and Helen, St. Anthony, and St. Nicholas (Pot-luck sponsored by Parish Council/Men’s Club)

PHILOPTOCHOS MEETING: There will be a General Meeting of the St. Helen Philoptochos next Sunday, March 20 following the service in the multi-purpose room. Please plan to stay as we discuss Lent, Easter, and future philanthropic efforts.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE: The Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade will be held on Sunday, April 10^th, starting at 3:00 pm on Monroe Street in Detroit’s Greektown Historic District. His Eminence, Archbishop Elpidophoros of North and South America will be in attendance. Please plan to come with your family and walk the parade route, representing Saints Constantine and Helen Church!

FRIDAY SALUTATIONS/CONFESSION: Each Friday during Lent we join in worship at the Salutations to the Theotokos services 6:00 pm. If you would like to be a reader for one of the Friday night services, please contact the church office or Fr. Teodor. Father will be available for one hour each Friday after the Salutations service to hear confession – no appointment is needed.

COCC VESPERS: Each Sunday evening throughout Lent the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches holds a Vespers service at a different area Orthodox church, beginning at 6:00 pm. Tonight’s 3/13/22 service will be held at the Basilica of St. Mary, Livonia; with a children’s procession of Icons. Fr. Paul Patistas, will serve as Homilist. All are welcome. IRISH FEST: Enjoy a family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Thursday March 17^th from 3:00pm – 9:00pm at the Hellenic Cultural Center! The $10 entrance fee will get you in the door for fantastic performances of Irish music and dance. The Hellenic Cultural Center will also have delicious Irish food and cash bar available. Bring your friends and support our HCC!

ORATORICAL FESTIVAL: It’s not too late for your young person to participate in our parish Oratorical Festival to be held on Sunday, March 20^th, immediately following the Divine Liturgy service. Young people grades 7 – 12, are invited to participate in the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, write a paper and give a speech about our faith. Competition finalists receive cash prizes. MAN OF GOD: An additional screening of the award-winning film “Man of God” about the life of St. Nectarios of Aegina, has been added on Monday, March 28^th at 7:00pm at the Phoenix Theatres, Laurel Park Place. (As of this writing, the 3/21 screening is nearly sold out.) If you wish to see the film, purchase tickets directly from the theatre, or your regular online ticket source.

LENTEN FOODS FOR SALE: Our Philoptochos will be selling Taramosalata and a few other Lenten foods in the coffee hour after church today.

MOM’S GROUP - COLLEGE CONNECTION: Our Mom’s Group will be sending out “College Connection” care packages on March 20 to all of our college students, undergraduate or graduate, living home or away. Any moms who would like to stay after church to help pack and address the packages, are welcome! If you have a student in college, please submit names, current address, email address to Cathy Brylinski at cbrylins@gmail.com. If your young person has graduated or is no longer attending college, or would prefer not to receive a package, please let us know so we can remove them from the list.

Non-Orthodox Visitors Please Note: Holy Communion is offered to Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared themselves. Visitors are welcome to receive the Antidoron (Blessed Bread), which is distributed at the end of the Divine Liturgy.
