The Holy Martyrs Chrysanthus and Daria

Saint Chrysanthus, who was from Alexandria, had been instructed in the Faith of Christ by a certain bishop. His father, who was a senator by rank and a pagan, had him shut up in prison for many days; then, seeing the unchanging disposition of his mind, he commanded that a certain young woman named Daria be brought from Athens. She was a very beautiful and learned maiden, and also an idolater, and Chrysanthus' father wedded him to her so that he might be drawn away from the Faith of Christ because of his love for her. Instead of this however, Chrysanthus drew Daria unto piety, and both of them boldly proclaimed Christ and received the crown of martyrdom in 283, during the reign of Numerian, when they were buried alive in a pit of mire.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6.

BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES:

HOPE and JOY LENTEN “GOOD DEEDS” BRUNCH: TODAY, March 19^th, following the Divine Liturgy service, our HOPE and JOY families will gather in the Hellenic Cultural Center and share a brunch meal, and assemble Easter Baskets to be distributed by FOCUS Detroit to needy Detroit-area children. GOYA members and parents are also needed as volunteers for the event.

PHILOPTOCHOS GENERAL MEETING: There will be a General Meeting of the St. Helen Philoptochos TODAY, Sunday March 19^th following the service in the Library/Multi-purpose room.

GREEK SCHOOL PROGRAM: Following the March 25^th Feast of the Annunciation service, the children from our Three Hierarchs Greek School, in association with the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Church, will present a program in honor of Greek Independence Day. Our young dancers will also perform, and a complimentary luncheon will be served.

MEN’S CLUB MEETING: Next Sunday, March 26, there will be a meeting of the Men’s Club following the Divine Liturgy service in the Hall. Please plan to attend.

LENTEN SEAFOOD BUFFET: Each Friday evening through April 7^th, the HCC will be serving a delicious Lenten Seafood Buffet Supper from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Please invite your friends and neighbors to join you for supper, no reservations are required.

PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY/ICONOGRAPHY LECTURES: Each Wednesday evening during Lent, following the 5:30 pm Presanctified Liturgy service, Father Teodor and guest presenters will discuss the lives of the Holy Hierarchs. The schedule is as follows:

March 22 – The Center of the Earth: The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, presented by David Conrad, Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit
March 29 – The life of St. Nektarios, presented by Fr. Mark Sietsema, Holy Trinity Church, Lansing

Both services will be available via live video-feed on the parish website, www.stcons.org, if you are unable to attend in person. Mr. Conrad’s presentation, March 22^nd, will not be available on video feed.

PRAY WITH US: All are welcome! Each Tuesday morning during Lent at 10:00 am, please gather with us, as we read prayers honoring one of the Church Hierarchs featured in our newly installed Iconography. We will meet in the Board Room. Our small group will also pray for those on our parish prayer list.

PALM SUNDAY LUNCHEON: Our parish will hold its traditional Palm Sunday fish luncheon on Sunday, April 9^th, immediately following the Divine Liturgy service. We have delicious new menu items in our buffet! Plan to stay after service and attend with your family, as we begin Holy Week together. Tickets will be on sale after church and in the church office.

NEWS AND NOTICES:

RED EGG DYE: We are expecting a large shipment of Anatoli brand Red egg dye from Greece, which will be available for sale in the Church Bookstore on Palm Sunday and through Holy Week. (Our last shipment sold out immediately at the GreekFest.)

DANCE COSTUMES - WE NEED YOUR HELP! As our parish re-establishes the Greek Dance program, we are in need of female and male dance costumes of all styles in children’s and adult sizes. If you, or one of your children, have participated in Greek Dance and have a costume you can donate, please bring it to the church office before April 8^th (Saturday of Lazarus.)

MDSC SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: Our parish will sponsor $100 for each St. Cons child who is registered for the Metropolis Detroit Summer Camp program to assist with registration fees. Please talk to Fr. Teodor or the church office for more information.

CHILDREN’S LAMBATHES: Our Mom’s Group is selling personalized lambathes this year! Order forms are available in today’s bulletin, or at the church office. You have many selections to choose from – they are made to order, and no two are exactly alike! Lambathes are $20, plus an additional $5 if you would like them personalized. Orders must be received by March 26^th, for a Holy Week pick up. For more information, contact Corrin at cstamatakos@gmail.com

ORATORICAL CONGRATS: Congratulations to all the young people who participated in our St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival last week! Senior Division: Irene Petrutiu, Isavella Kahremanis, and Nicole Petrutiu (Finalist): and Junior Division: Ryan Stamatakos and Drew Stamatakos (Finalist.) Our Finalists will next compete in the Detroit-area District Competition to be held on April 22 at St. John Church, Sterling Heights.

AHEPA DISTRICT 10 SCHOLARSHIPS - AHEPA District 10, which encompasses Michigan, is offering scholarships for graduating high school students and for current college students! Sixty scholarships totaling $80,000 were distributed in 2022. Applications are available now at ahepadistrict10.org/educational-foundation and are due on April 1, 2023.

MEMORIAL SERVICES: Please call the church office to schedule all memorials and coffee hour sponsorships at least two weeks in advance. On the day of the service, please bring a list of family names you would like Father to remember in prayer. Coffee Hour sponsorship is not required, however the church is grateful to those who wish to make a sponsorship donation of $150, and the HCC will set up a table with cloth and coffee, etc. for your family.

REMEMBER THE CHURCH IN YOUR WILL:You’ve supported the church your whole life, remembering us in your estate plan will help the church when you’re gone. Consult your estate planner or contact the Church office for information.
