Do you ever have one of those moments when you say, “What have I just done?” Perhaps you just broke a valuable, even heirloom piece of china! Maybe you just backed your car out of the garage without opening the door! Perhaps you just had your hair done and look in the mirror to see it way too short, or maybe too bright of an orange! Yes, we have all had these types of moments.
However, do you ever find yourself saying, “What have I just not done?” What have I failed to do is not something we say much, certainly not in exasperation.
You know, there sins of commission – those things we do wrong, things against the commandments and precepts of God – and there are sins of omission – things we fail to do that we ought to have done.
One of the greatest quotes from any president comes from John Kennedy, when he said, “Ask not what your country can do for. Ask what you can do for your country.” The same can be said for your Faith: Ask not what God can do for you. Ask what you can do for God. Or, ask not what your church can do for you, but ask what you can do for your church.
These are some thoughts to ponder as we prepare for this Sunday’s Gospel reading and sermon. Think about it, and come mentally prepared to receive God’s Word, and spiritually prepared to receive His Body and Blood.
